Game Preview: Georgia St.
Figured I'd start a dedicated, non-Duane, thread for this.

Georgia State
Kenpom: #96
Off %: 101
Def %: 106

Based on those numbers, they're slightly better than a team like Tulsa. Don't know the first thing about them, though, so who's done some research already?

D'Marcus Simonds is their star. 6'4 power guard that is on the NBA radar. High usage player that doesn't shoot well from the perimeter.

They shoot a ton of threes at a very high percentage. One of their better shooters is Devin Mitchell, he had a UC offer out of high school before going to Alabama.

They aren't very big and really rely on their starters.

They play a zone defense that gives up a ton of threes, but they are relatively stingy against twos.

With that said, I have never seen them play. Just going by their numbers on KenPom.

I think we have a decent chance at going down. I'm serious.

Are we not like 24-0 against teams of this caliber this year? Come on.

RE: Game Preview: Georgia St.
i posted this on the AAc thread but bears repeating: I had Georgia State as the last 13 seed. They have better predictive metrics than all the other 15s, 3 14s and 2 13 seeds. As far as first round draws for a 2 seed they are about as tough a team as you would ever expect to get. Probably the level of a team like Tulsa or Memphis. UC has won all their games this year against teams at that level, but it's a team that can get us if we don't come out ready to play. I think UC will roll because this team has a way of taking care of business in games it should win.

They lost to Tulane at home by 11. That's the team we beat by almost 30.

Lots of big guys who like to shoot and score. They will come in like alpha's trying to show what they can do vs our top 3 defense. Let's hope they come out cold and we can put them away early.

I think the committee basically seeded a lot of these Sunday championship games so they wouldn't have to move them based on outcome. I bet they would have been a line higher if their finals was on Saturday. I think they picked a line spot that no matter who won the Sunbelt they'd be happy. I think we would have had the exact same seed spot if we had lost Sunday, and I think they built it so if Tenn won and we lost they just would flip us.

I posted this on the main AAC board:

The last time UC lost to a team ranked as low as GA St in Kenpom, Larry Davis was the head coach and Gary Clark was a freshman.

Let's start by staying at home on D, no second shots and play inside out on offense. i don't know if they can score in the post but i'll take KW/Gary vs. the field one on one in the post. No need to double team the post. Stay at home on shooters and box out.

Just based on that highlight video I see a lot of really soft D on both ends. I think watching UC night in and night out it's easy to forget how good this team is defensively (even with people saying it all the time). Can GA St. compete? Yeah, I think so. Are they out of their depth? Yup, sure are.

Are those the same G State players as this years team? Two completely different teams.

UC is the better team. They just need to come out strong and set the tone for the game. Don't let this team hang around because the crowd will get into it if there as any chance for an upset.

I don't think there will be any problems.

What's a "decent chance," in your mind?
