The 2013 NCAA Tournament was the last time CUSA or Sun Belt had an at-large berth in the Dance. WKU won the auto and MTSU the at-large. CUSA hasn't had an at-large since 2012.

With a number of power conferences going to 20 game schedules it is going to get harder still to get at-large.

Maybe we should skim just a bit of the CFP money and put together a neutral site doubleheader for our prior year's regular season champ and conference tournament champ (or prior year second best RPI if the regular season champ wins the tournament) and buy a pair of opponents to play sometime during the winter school break.

Or you know maybe sponsor a foreign tournament. ASU-Mexico has a nice looking small gym that could probably find some sponsor money for a Sun Belt classic. I think foreign rule is once every four years so maybe send three teams each year.

Something like the old ESPN bracketbuster between all the non power fives would be cool. One home one away vs teams with similar RPI's midway through the season

The only way to get better is to play better teams and that is not good for the won/lost record or the coach. It would be nice to see an early season matchup with another G5 conferences every year and can't understand why it can't be done.

RE: Five years
Basketball has always pissed me off in the way teams can load up on home games and not be penalized like you are in baseball. When the Big Ten felt disadvantaged by traveling for baseball games in the early spring they got the rules changed to benefit them. Now a home win is only 0.7 off a win, neutral site win is 1.0 of a win and a road win is 1.3 of a win. Likewise a road loss is only 0.7 of a loss, a neutral site loss is 1.0 of a loss, and a road win is 1.3 of a win. If we had a system like this in place for basketball it would encourage those teams to at least not load up on home games and some mid majors would end up getting some games against some P5 schools. And when their team isn’t at home their winning percentage isn’t as high. But when every team in your conference could play mostly home games out of conference and have 1-2 games neutral site with a good OOC opponent then that entire conference is going to have a high RPI and playing those teams each week don’t hurt you.

Heck when was the last time some conference other than the Power 5, Big East, A10, or AAC got an at-large? Probably would have to go before 2014-2015.

The WCC has Gonzaga and St. Mary's most years.

RE: Five years
Middle Tennessee did what the PTB wanted and scheduled 3 SEC, 1 PAC, and 1 ACC team. They beat Vandy and Ole Miss. They loss to #16 Auburn (SEC season champs) by 6, loss to USC (#2 in PAC) by 5 and #24 Miami by 3. They didn't get blown out in those games and showed that they could play with the upper level of conferences that put in 20 teams.

The fact that Oklahoma made the tournament.....or should I say Trae Young made the tournament, and MTSU and St Marys (Top 25 team) go to NIT shows that the committee wants the major conferences and will throw the occasional bone to the mid majors.

The WCC has Gonzaga and St. Mary's most years.

The WCC is also helped by BYU, and the MWC can still put a team in occasionally (like Nevada this year and Boise a few years ago). Those are as close to a mid-major as it seems we're going to get these days. The MVC probably lost their shot with Wichita's move to the AAC.

And so we have a Power 6+2 with a couple of occasional stragglers.

The thing that bugs me the most about it is that it would seem that part of the point of having 68 freaking teams in a tournament would be to allow some of the teams that didn't have as much of a chance to prove themselves in the regular season to show what they can do against the rest of the top competition. This isn't a 4-team playoff!

They expanded because there was an uproar because good Mid-Majors were being left out......now they just look for the opportunity to add more of the power conference teams and still exclude the Mid-Majors.

St Mary’s was robbed big time this year.

The system is warped. They’ve sold the narrative that low teams from major conferences with crappy records are now “Cinderella” teams if they go on a run and people have bought it.

I honestly hadn't thought of this but it's a great point. Talk about having their cake and eating it too...

That said, wouldn't "Cinderella" football teams be awesome? Imagine neutral field insanity. I can dream.

My dream CFP all the conference champs and two at-larges.
Rate the champs 1-10. Then 1-4 get a first round bye and home field. Champs rated 5-8 get home field then the two remaining champs and the two at-large get rated 1-4 with the highest rated traveling to #8, second highest to #7, third to #6 and fourth to #5.

Without any assumption any team I support will ever be there, it only seems right.
