I'm not sold on what we see listed above. It could turn out to be good. It could turn out to be over rated.

The fly in the ointment for them not panning out could easily be Jones. He has stymied the development of both Godwin and Hueitt by severely limiting their playing time as freshmen to the point that for all intents and purposes they really didn't get much in the way of meaningful court time. With that being said ... Can we count on them to get significant game time next season? Will they play like Freshmen if they do, or second year players which they will actually be?

Green very much underperformed this season for the amount of hype that he received along with him sitting out a year to learn Jeff's system. Will he show significant improvement next season, or will he be the same foul prone, turnover prone, poor shooting, and tentative player that he was off the bench this season? Hopefully we will see a more confident and in control Xavier, but who knows.

The incoming freshmen all look good on paper, but then again so did Godwin and Hueitt last year. Even though we could have used their shooting, both of them could just as easily have red shirted this season for what was earned by their on court contributions. Can we really say for sure that any of the incoming freshmen will get significant playing time, and if so will they play like zombies due to over thinking their defensive assignments in Jones' man-to-man defense. Apparently it must be more difficult than 400 level Calculus for incoming Freshmen to understand based upon that being the rhetoric for Godwin and Hueitt hardly being able to see the court this season.

Even if Porter is still on the team, who is his back-up? No guarantees that Jeff can get a transfer center to come in no matter how much he may want one. If Porter were to leave as a graduate transfer then the problem at his position is doubled.

Kithcart is supposed to be a good point guard from what a few on here have stated. How good is he, and in what areas of play - ball handling, passing, foul shooting, 3 point shooting, defense, etc. - I don't know since I have never seen him play. Hopefully he is very good and if so can get significant minutes. That too is a potential issue since he is apparently behind the guy that is playing 38+ minutes a game. If that doesn't change significantly, it won't really matter too much how good he is since he will not be in the game very long unless Caver moves over to play several minutes at the 2 position each game. If that happens then that cuts into the minutes of Green, Godwin, Hueitt, and/or Wade.

I'm optimistic that it could work out, but at the same time realistic enough to believe that ODU will be sitting in much the same boat a year from now as they are currently - on the outside looking in.

Green was a freshman playing too many minutes. I wouldn't say he underperformed, he just performed too much. Not sure what his work ethics is, but as a freshman, he produced a lot like Bazemore and BJ did as sophomores. I agree with most of the rest of your post, but I think Green could be a star.

Is there actually ANY smoke on Porter leaving other than a few anonymous posters on an internet message board saying so? If not, I'll believe it when I see it.

I hope not, but we don't have media breaking behind the scenes stuff so all we have is speculation from anonymous posters that are wrong as often as they are right. Sad really.

There is certainly a chance he could be the final piece of the puzzle for some P5 program. Hopefully he has built enough roots here to inspire loyalty.

Next years team is similar to this year; just rely more heabily on the big 3; all are all conference talents. Outside of them, you just need solid role players. I think if Kithcart is as good as people have said, he will move Caver to 2 guard for stretches of the game. Godwin/Hueit/Green will take up Haynes minites and then some. I expect better production from the wings next year; probably better shooting and less defense. Im still surprised Wade came here, but he may need to redshirt unless he really blows up.

The question is on the last spot. Carver will give us some minutes; either starting or as a backup. Possible transfer. If not, BJ will play some 4 (which i encourage). Ekikpe/Reece will have to give us some mins; ready or not.

RE: 2018-2019 Monarchs
I agree. We have the talent/size to play small and fast next year. Our PG and SG spots are set with Caver/Kithcart and Hueitt locked in to those three spots. After that, we have some flexibility. Green, Godwin, and BJ can all play the 2/3 if needed. BJ can give us solid minutes at the 4, which we'll likely need. Assuming Porter stays, we're REALLY good at C. Our best lineup will likely be Caver, Godwin/Hueitt, Green, Stith, and Porter. All five rebound their position well, and we'll be very good in man-to-man defense at every position except occasionally at PF. If the freshmen bigs can give us 5 minutes each, we'll be fine up front. Our backcourt should be spectacular, though.

I wish we'd abandon the man to man when we play better teams. It expends too much energy and when the other team has more talented players, it breaks down. That is probably a big reason why we don't ever win big games whereas Blaine did. Zones can mitigate talent discrepancies. No matter how good you are at defense, a faster, bigger or stronger player will drive past you or shoot over your reach. Conversely and for the same reasons, a good man to man will make sure an inferior team struggles to put up points on you.

If Aaron Carver is starting, we are in trouble.

Edit: Also..."Ready or not"...GET THEM READY.

We opened up and played a lot of zone against WKU in the tournament, and it seemed to work well. I don't know why we moved away from it

It's because Jones is in love with his man-to-man defense. It was a bad choice to switch away from the zone midway through the 1st half when the zone had stymied WKU to that point and given him a 5 or 6 point lead. As the old saying goes .... If is isn't broke, don't fix it.

We held WKU to 57 points. We only scored 49.

Defense wasn't the issue.

We held them to their lowest shooting output all season. I think points too.
10-flipping 20 from the foul line and 7% 3 point shooting lost that game.

Mac, that is where developing your younger guys that can shoot, can be a big a big factor in a game like this. No matter what anyone says, ready or not ready, Hueitt and Godwin on the bench all season was a huge mistake by Jeff Jones. I will say Godwin was probably the reason we beat USM at their place. Jeff wanted to find some offense and he put Godwin in there. It worked.

With nobody putting the ball in the basket in this last game, why did he not look to the two Freshmen on the bench? That is what I do not understand, and that has been my problem with JJ this year. The Zone was killing WKU, and he went away from it. SMH!!!

Of course offense was an issue, but that's another matter for discussion, and even that has implications on what defense ODU is playing if you read what posters have indicated this year. According to many of them neither Hueitt or Godwin is capable of playing adequate man-to-man defense as far as Jones is concerned. Godwin certainly could have played at the top of the zone and maybe help to create more offense, but again, that is another matter for discussion, and yet another questionable decision.

Ignoring the move away from playing zone against WKU when it worked throughout the game while it was being played is wrong. The main reason we held WKU to 57 points is because we played zone as much as we did. Had we not abandoned it in the 1st half - while it was working very well and had gotten us a 2 or 3 possession lead - we may have held them to less than 50 points. As soon as ODU went man-to-man WKU went on a 12-0 run (I believe) and ODU started picking up fouls on their drives to the basket. Their sudden run offensively also had an impact on ODU's offense as it is hard to get any fast break baskets when they were constantly having to bring the ball in bounds after a made basket.

I don't see that changing next year either. Plus we will more limited at the 4/5 position. This all points to a worse season unless we get an influx of 1 or 2 experienced talent.

Does anyone have any info on Kah? As far as I know, he's eligible for another year.

News? Rumors? Wishes?
