Tubby will probably be back next season, if you are going to part ways with a coach now is the time, regardless on who your choice is. The way this has gone down in the last week, our administration will not say a word about the “end of the year review” and keep him without saying a word. There will be no “ votes of confidence” or anything.

There's no point. This team doesn't have the resume.
Still, fight for your own team. Tubby knocked them.

He would be crazy to do that..He should be paid market value.

I'm not knocking the hire at all but how do you set market value for a coach with no college coaching experience? What UK would pay for him as an assistant?

Penny strong armed the university by strategically leaking info when he should have kept quiet. He will get his wish and will get hired, but now the university holds all the cards. Start the negotiations at $1 million and see where it goes.

Not true. But please, keep saying it over and over again.

Of course it's true.

RE: Calkins: Why Memphis may fire Tubby Smith....*hint* financial reasons
Perhaps Tubby and his recruiting crew could learn to multitask, i.e. focus on more than one Memphis player at a time.

Perhaps they could learn to return the calls of folks who tried to connect with them, even though their players were not being currently targeted by Tubby and staff.

Perhaps Tubby and staff could learn that you can't start courting players a few weeks before early signing.

Perhaps they could learn that it behooves them to get into the game sooner in order to build relationships--ones based on mutual respect.

O . never mind. Perhaps not.

I doubt if anyone will actually get committed to the nut house, but there will be many who should be, for their own sake.

Word on the street corner is that Tubby's done here. Just working out a few details before we send him riding into the sunset.

RE: Calkins: Why Memphis may fire Tubby Smith....*hint* financial reasons
As someone who's only been following Memphis basketball closely since my kid decided to go to UofM a few years ago, this article does clear up a number of points for me.

1.) How could a team that has shown improvement towards the end of their season even with their best player injured be in the conversation for firing their coach?

2.) Considering what the roster looked like at the end of last season, and considering that almost everyone will be returning next year, I'd say there should be a degree of optimism for next year.

This article really spells out (as many of you have been pointing out throughout the season) just how drastic the drop in donations have been. We've all seen just how poor actual attendance has been at the games - heck, the one game I went to at the Forum was the game against Northern KY where they basically gave out free tickets to everyone who went to the football game. They had about 42,000 people at the football game, yet only a few thousand at the basketball game. If people aren't showing up for something that is free, you have big problems.

I think both sides failed to do their due diligence in 2016 - Memphis for not closely examining Tubby's recruiting abilities, and not doing more investigations in how he marketed his past programs, and how he planned to market the Tigers program. Tubby failed to understand UofM's objectives - e.g., we need a coach who will not only post a winning record, but will act as a fundraiser in chief, and top marketer for getting butts in the seats at games.

There was a lot riding for both sides on Memphis making the Big 12. First, this would have given UofM access to far more TV revenue, which would have lessened the burden on Tubby to have to be the fundraiser and marketer. It sounds like Tubby's lawyer thought the Big 12 was a done deal. But even then, would Tubby have been able to recruit at a level to sustain success in that conference? As it is, the Big 12 didn't work out, and suddenly, the program needed someone to get a local fan base excited about games against ECU, Temple and USF rather than Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

21-13 against a slaw schedule.

Not even a sniff from the NIT. Too many metrics out there these days. Just winning 20-22 games and having 'Memphis' on the jersey won't cut it when it's easy to 'look behind the curtain'.

You are dead on here. The Memphis recruiting scene is very political and there are coattail riders attached to many high level recruits, and Tubby won’t so much as meet a local high school coach for a cup of coffee. That apporach has worked at schools where basketball is just icing on the cake, but not at a program like Memphis. I think Tubby came in expecting Memphis players to fall in his lap, and the admin expected him to do a little more than he’s done in the past to make the recruiting engine run.

Neither side, as you point out, aligned their expectations.

I don't think either side had expectations where BB was concerned.

Tubby was coasting in, and we were blasting off for the Big12!!!!

I guess it depends on what you mean by optimism. They should be better. Of course they'll be better than a team that lost to two sub 250 teams. They might have a decent shot at the NIT. And then we'll be in rebuild mode. Depends on how you look at it, I guess.
