Based on anything in particular?

The Spring Game. I'm not saying he won't be improved, but he's not going to be David Washington next season. Not even close. In order to beat good defensive teams next year, ODU must run the ball like they did two years ago.

I put zero stock in the apring game. The defense is always at an advantage until a couple weeks into the fall camp. Offense is all timing and you dont get it in the spring.

I understand your point. I am putting some merit to what I saw. Drayton Arnold managed to play extremely well and move the ball up and down the field. LaRussa jumped in and did the same.

And the 1st string defense after SW got hurt.

RE: Spring Training Starts Tuesday
SW is a big strong athletic kid who was best able to run for his life last season, because often he had to. He was otherwise somewhat awkward.

Given the lack of receiver support, it was so very difficult to assess his performance as a passer. He has a strong arm but so far it is difficult to determine his accuracy and finesse, especially when pressured.
From what I have seen, he still exhibits that awkwardness, but then so did Johnny Unitas.

Certainly Drayton Arnold is the most polished of the three; indeed, IMHO, of any QB except for TH, before or after.
I am concerned about his size which limits his vision, and his durability which could problematic; as someone else noted because of his propensity to tuck and run. That he is able to throw on the scramble somewhat mitigates the vision issues, however it is usually best at this level to make the play as originally designed.

Time will tell, but as others have pointed out it may be premature to anoint Steven Williams #1 for 2018 just yet.

If this team is going to go to a bowl game this year, it will need to be SW being behind center and playing well. No other QB on the roster has his talent.

In what way?
I would argue that DA has more talent than SW. He seems to have more "feel" for precision short to medium passes, and he throws better and more accurately on the run, and may have more pocket presence than SW.

It may well be that SW is ultimately the better choice because of his size, strength and long pass capability, IF he improves.
However to categorically say he has more talent.......

What is that based on? Arnold does not have good pocket awareness and escapes the pocket or throws off his back foot.

He doesn't have the speed, the strength, the size, or the arm strength that SW has. I can't think of anything, talent wise, that Arnold is superior at.

Players can improve so I will acknowledge that. But, the fact that Arnold couldn't play over Larussa, and more importantly, Hoy is a major indication for his level of talent/play.

SW's raw talent is incredible, and I think he was a serviceable qb as a freshman. If he is able to develop his skills to a high level, he will be an elite QB. If Arnold is marginally better right now, which I am doubtful of, it still makes sense to play SW because of his enormous up side.

So we can't base our opinions on SW based on practices / scrimmages, but you have written Drayton Arnold off based on practices and scrimmages? 01-wingedeagle

Why would we base our opinions on SW based on practice when we've seen him play in games? Someone said they didn't expect SW to get significantly better because of the spring game.

DA has also been here 2 years. Having Jordan Hoy play over him gives us a pretty good indication on what the staff thought of DA last year. They put in an athlete that couldn't throw the ball well at all and didn't know much of the playbook in over him.

I am expecting SW to have a solid year this year. In the last five games last year, he completed 65.9% of his passes with no interceptions. I think that is a valid indicator of what we can expect out of him this year, and with his athleticism, he will be a genuine threat when he is on the field.

SW's timing and touch was just a little off during the spring game. He needs to make the throws for his receivers to catch. If he can stop overthrowing just a bit, he'll be a very, very good QB.

Im in complete agreement with you. SW should be solid this year. 19 is a very good number.

I expect SW to have a break out year. But if he doesn’t...the keys will be taken away and next man up.

Can't complete the pass if you don't open your eyes. Won't be surprised if this kid gets Bentley'd early in the season.

I'm sure that is what most Virginia Tech fans hope for but i doubt very seriously that it happens.

Not getting up in time for two mandatory meetings is all I need to know about SW. No doubt someone was talking 4 year starter to the kid and it got in his head. He knows he heard that alarm clock but he chose to ignore it. Why would a 4 year starter worry and what would be his motivation moving forward. The kid doesn't have to look behind his back. Right?

Drayton Arnold needs to be ready on day one.

RE: Spring Training Starts Tuesday
Really curious to see how this works out in Louisville. This dude couldn't even earn a spot and yet transferring to Louisville.

http://www.insidenova.com/sports/prince_...b1e7e.html

Jean-Luc Childs, a 2015 Forest Park High School graduate, is transferring from Old Dominion University to Louisville. The lineman said he will walk on for the fall and was told by the coaches he will be on scholarship for the spring of 2019. Childs said he decided to transfer since there was no longer a spot for him at ODU.

Childs enrolled at ODU as a walk-on and was red-shirted his freshman season.

Childs said for ODU to comply with Title IX, he, his brother Phillipe and several others sat out the 2016 season after he said the school had to reduce the number of players on the football team via a lottery. Childs said he was told by ODU he could return in the spring of 2017. When he came back in the spring, Childs said he was told the football team had no available room for him.

In a statement, ODU said this wasn’t the case.

“Our maximum roster number for the football season is 116 players,” the statement said. “Jean-Luc and Phillipe were never promised a roster spot and were told we would reach out if anything became available, and it never did.”

Childs said he will enroll at Louisville as an offensive lineman, but could switch back to defense.
