RE: Spring Training Starts Tuesday
I wish BW would just address it. He has to know this looks bad. He needs to explain it. If its that the others only had to sit out a year, or chose to leave rather than sit thats a reasonable answer. If not, then tell us how you justify this. Maybe theres a good reason, or maybe not. But it would be good to know the line of thinking. ODU has spoken out publicly about why he's let people go in the past, so doing so for keeping a person seems appropriate too.

It would definitely be a good idea for him to get out in front of this before the narrative gets out of his control. Hopefully he does.

Good luck Dereck Wilder!
And you are OK with this?
Unless I have missed something, every player in our short history who was convicted of a felony was released from the program.
It appeared to be standard policy.
Derek Wilder was convicted of "felony eluding".
Rape, Assault and Battery, Larceny, use of a firearm in a crime? Sure. Eluding? not so sure.
Coach Wilder is a parent first and the last thing he wants to do is send his kid several miles away unsupervised.
He's responsible for raising his kid and should be able to choose how he does it.
Also, Coach Wilder is an ambassador to this area and has been involved in the community since he got here. He is afforded special consideration in circumstances like this.
Hmmm. Eluding police can put multiple lives in danger. It is potentially far more dangerous to the public at large than a guy punching another guy in a bar.
One of the highlights of this young program has been the consistency with which all player issues have been handled. Indeed the program has heretofore been a model.
ODU804 made a reasonable point above, however I disagree in the strongest terms that BW should get special consideration.
The optics of this just don't look good at all, IMO.
Not just your opinion!

Entirely possible that his excuse is that it is his son, perhaps why we haven't heard anything about it. would be a pretty bad look if that were the case. hopefully not. like you guys, would love to hear the reasoning behind this.

So you want him to turn his back on his son?
Look, he made the decision and suffered no backlash from the team or ODU admin. Look at the enthusiasm in Spring Practice. No one is giving up their scholarship in protest. No fan is withdrawing their support to ODU athletics over this.
There's nothing you and I can do about it. I think we should all move on.

I wonder how we will fare with kicks, punts, etc. this year. It would be nice to have an ace in that department again.

You can say move on all you want but there is clearly a double standard here. Some kids get kicked off the team for violation of team rules but the coaches son is convicted of a felony and he is still on the team. Don't start with he was suspended last season because he was hurt (from his stupid decision) and was going to miss most of the year anyway. No one is asking him to abandon his son, he can help him find a fcs school and transfer without missing another year, like he has done for other players. If people on a message board notice the double standard then you know the players and recruits notice it too.

This.
It may not be a big deal now but what happens in the future when another player who isnt the "coaches son" gets popped with a felony. As far as Im concerned, if one is gone they're all gone. If you let one stay and "rehabilitate" from their previous mistakes, you do it for all.
Someone must be a friend of the family to be so upset with posters saying he should get the axe.

RE: Spring Training Starts Tuesday
I am pretty dispassionate about this issue and can see both sides. I think the reality of the situation depends on what the standard for other disciplinary actions has been. I have no issue setting a standard of removing all felons from the team. I also don't have an issue with giving non violent felons a chance at redemption. I really do feel that, in a vacuum, DW's offense is the sort that should not be allowed to ruin a kid's life. But we don't live in a vacuum and BW needs to do what is fair with regards to the rest of the team, or he could find himself in a difficult situation in the locker room.

Just a thought, how do we know if the team wasn't asked to vote on Wilders fate?
