OT: Virginian-Pilot sold to Tronc
Now they’re owned by the same company that owns the Daily Press

I wonder if they'll merge into a single paper.

Probably not a full merge in that the logistics of covering the entire region with one newspaper would be difficult (plus both papers still have their brand loyalty, which is why you rarely saw the two in direct competition except to a very limited degree in Western Tidewater).

But I do think you'll get some combining of sections. Like I could see the two sports staffs working under one editor. That happened when McClatchy purchased the Raleigh paper, the sports staff there became part of the Charlotte/Rock Hill staffs, even though they didn't all move to the same physical office. I don't think you'd see literally the same section on both sides of the water because people in the Southside don't particularly care about local Peninsula sports and vice versa, but the production of it would be under the same umbrella.

This will probably lead to more layoffs, which were alluded to in another thread. That's what happened when Warren Buffett's group, which already owned the Winston-Salem paper, bought Greensboro's. Shortly after the acquisition, they cut deep at both properties to get rid of redundancies and improve the always important profit margin. But they still have distinct publications.

How it affects ODU coverage, I don't know. The Daily Press used to send a reporter to ODU football and men's and (when they were good) women's basketball games, but I can't imagine that continuing; they'd just use the Pilot's coverage. Whether that means Ed, one of the Daily Press reporters, or someone else entirely, I'm not sure.

More than 11 years to be exact. The whole saga started in early 2008 when Landmark announced that everything was for sale. The Weather Channel was the big plum and that went to NBC early (and has since been sold again for a fraction of the price, almost literally pennies on the dollar). Buffett bought Greensboro and Roanoke, tronc bought Annapolis, and the Pilot went unsold for all that time.

Hard to believe that they only got $34M for the sale. I would think they real estate is worth at least that much alone...

They won't merge but I bet they'll divide beats. DP will take UVA and VT, WM; VP will take ODU, Admirals, Tides, whatever else, maybe even Hampton, NSU. They may go in and split a Redskins writer who lives there already. Teel will be the columnist for both, Molinaro will keep his Friday notes and maybe be coerced into writing something occasionally on a hot southside topic. Each paper will have the option of using the other guys' stuff.

Good news for the employees, but I can't imagine they won't take the opportunity at some point to see efficiencies in overhead, even if they remain separate papers. I would like to see one paper personally. I'm interested in about 20% of each paper and would be more likely to subscribe if they cut most of the crap and had one 757 paper full of local news, business news, and sports.

There will definitely be a culling to remove redundancies though it'll be a while to figure out how many people they need to put out a daily product. I forget if Tronc uses regional hubs for copy editing and designing, but that would result in cuts. I don't think there's a whole lot of overlap between the two audiences outside of regional/national news and sports, such as it is. People in Williamsburg and Newport News generally don't care about what happens in Norfolk or Virginia Beach, or vice versa. And the papers themselves still command some loyalty, even in this day and age.

Now the websites could merge into one overarching site, and at the very least the Pilot's site will probably be revamped to be more like the other Tronc sites.

I don't know anyone younger than me who reads the newspaper. Been reading the paper daily for 24 years but it's pitiful now. I often wondered how the paper survives in today's time until I paid for 5 family members obituaries over a 12 month period. It cost nearly $8 for 4 - 7 words per line.

I used to buy it for the crossword puzzles, but 3 kids later I don't have time for puzzles. I already know yesterday's news. I would buy it for local business news, but I can now get more of that from the free rag in the lobby of my office building since the DP and VP don't really cover it anymore. I have kind of grown out of wanting to read someone else's political opinion columns and they have become so predictable, I really don't need to do anything more than watch CNN for 5 minutes to know the opeds will just be a regurgitation of those talking points. No independent thought whatsoever. The only reason I buy the paper anymore is to keep the local sports writers employed... but, while more reliable, even they are starting to fall pretty far behind message boards and social media insofar as speed of information.
