Just to be clear: you would rather see ODU lose games than win them? That would certainly excite the alumni base.

I'm pretty sure there's a middle ground between "only play MEAC schools" and "only play big-name opponents on the road." And as a whole, ODU threads that needle pretty well most seasons. This year, with VCU and Richmond crapping out, St. Bonaventure backing out of a series and a Charleston tournament that could have provided two bona fide powers but because of the Temple loss resulted in crappy Indiana State and down Dayton, the schedule was compromised.

I think short of adding a buy game at a powerhouse in place of a tomato can at home, the scheduling philosophy is fine, this season notwithstanding.

Yea, the fan base will be greatly excited to see if we can compete with the best rather than the least. Which games were u excited about this season?
But when you suggest playing at Kentucky and using the money to schedule a home and home with a St. Mary's or BYU, you get shat on. As an small time as our program is becoming, our fan base just grabs their ankles.

Beating good teams and playing more games against good teams could be seen as things that are complimentary to one another. If you swing the light bat all day then pick up an heavier one, its going to feel like you are swinging a lamp post, but if you swing a heavy bat all day then pick up the lighter one... well you know what I am getting at.

I mean, he said he would prefer to win every game, and he was happy with the schedule this season for that reason. I figure we can do him one better by only playing the MEAC and going undefeated in the non con.

I am fairly certain that if they put their egos aside and worked really hard to get a 2 for 1 against some P5 team, they could find one to play us.

I’m honestly not sure there are that many P5 teams that would do a 2 for 1 with us. These P5 teams have zero to gain from it.

Maybe we need to get more creative and start packaging football and basketball games together. If UVA wants to play in Norfolk, their bball team better bring us to town.

Looking at the ACC alone:

UVA played @VCU
UNC played @Davidson
Miami played @George Washington and @Hawaii
Notre Dame played @DePaul and @Delaware
Boston College played @Hartford
Georgia Tech played @Wofford
Wake Forest played @Charlotte and @Coastal Carolina

The last two wouldn't have helped our schedule this year, but yes, getting P5 schools at the Ted can be done. I still think we take a buy game and use that money to improve our schedule either through travel (expand our OOC footprint) or paying a P5 to come to the Ted rather than a 2 for 1 and get nothing out of it.

Someone in the AD has to still have a relationship with Shaka Smart, Brad Brownell, or Jim Larranaga.

I'm sure UCLA or Gonzaga would just love to come to Norfolk, Virginia, Coach!

Might get a Georgia Tech or Maryland if we did a 3-1 or 4-1, maybe. Can't even get UVA to come here, although they will play the A-10 team in Richmond.

Our AD should require these ACC teams that want to come kick our butt in football here that they can do that as long as they add a basketball home and home or 2-1.

St. Mary's might. Utah State might. BYU might. Colorado State or Nevada might. All have been left out of the tournament in recent years due to their schedule and lack of top 100 wins on the road. They are in the same boat as us. Gonzaga is a different animal and I agree they would have no reason to play a mid major on the road, much less one across the country.

I’ll dive into those games listed above later, but just off the top of my head, I can assure you at least a few of those games were done as very special favors.

No doubt.

So how do we get a very special favor? Do we have to make it political? Tell the governor no events at the Ted until he gets VT or UVA to schedule a H/H with us? I'm guessing the reason why UNC went to Davidson was probably similar where some bigwig Davidson grad raised a stink and made it happen.

I don't know, good point if so. The extent of my research was looking at the schedules on ESPN and it said @Davidson. That said, I'd take UVA and/or VT at the Richmond Coliseum. Maybe the new governor can make that happen like the governor did in 2012. Isn't he a Norfolk guy? Better yet, let's replace Norfolk State and play the game at Scope. Took a helluva political favor to get VT in the ACC. Time to pay it back.

If we have to get two road games, so be it. Trade away two of the Norfolk State, Fairfield, UMES, Bowling Green games.

Road wins count more anyway.

Nevermind the NCAAs, our 25 wins weren't good enough to get us to the NIT.

Let's at least try to be good enough to be snubbed by the selection committee.

Honestly, I would be far more excited to watch ODU play an ACC or Big 10 team on the road than watch a home game against a MEAC or MAAC team. Not only would the experience forge toughness, it would significantly raise our profile if we began to win some of those games. Teams like Gonzaga didn't become a power overnight.

Oh...and if the only way we're going to get into the NCAA tournament is by winning the conference, then any P5 road losses won't hurt us anyway.

I totally agree. You are identified by the teams that you play against. Playing against power conference teams instead of MEAC teams raises your profile, which raising your recruiting possibilities, and brings in even more potential quality opponents. You will never become a higher profile program without playing the teams you hope to be associated with.

It is also good for experience as has been mentioned before. There is no downside to going out and playing those teams aside from an ego hit to admins who don't think it looks good to take 2 for 1 games or road only game. I will tell you doesn't look good. Winning 25 games and not even being on the radar of the bubble, and not even being attractive enough for the NIT.
