But it’s all part of the equation and can’t be ignored. And VT coming to town this year will be the biggest event in Norfolk in a decade. They may kick our teeth in, but they came to Norfolk to do it. Who would have ever dreamed of a day? Not me.
So we should stay this losing course to be the Washington Generals when the Harlem Globetrotters come to town?

Losing course? Our road to the dance in bball isn’t any different than the caa. It’s just harder to win the tournament in cusa.
XACLY. And both winners are 13 seeds.

And how many caa teams are in the NIT vs CUSA? Give me a break re: how the caa is a better conference. Perhaps we should look to rpi conference rankings?

Our clear best was in the top 25. When is the last time the CAA had a ranked team?
What the hell does that mean when you don't even make the tournament? It wasn't like they were too 25 all season.

It’s a comparison of the conferences. That was the topic.
Ok... Then I suggest you start here.

Dude what are you even talking about at this point? You have changed your argument like 4 times. Are you just arguing for the sake of arguing? I'm more concerned about the one top 4 team that is not playing in the post season.

No one is romanticizing, but if wee are going to be in a one bid league, might as well be one in our time zone with rivalries.

Also if you take us out of cusa and put us in the caa the caa immediately becomes the much better league and cusa gets even worse.

It is what it is.

Completely agree - we are a mid-major needle mover that can’t find the right fit. And the caa is too small for us at this point. But our day is coming. Not tomorrow but in the next decade...

RE: Aftermath
Here is my "aftermath" after digesting last night.

The Good

Our Starting 5: Caver and the Stith Brothers continue to improve, but particularly the development of both Porter and Haynes has been a joy to watch. Hopefully either Green, Godwin, or Hueitt, (or a combination thereof) can fill Haynes' production. Unfortunately, Brandon's will be more difficult as I don't believe we have a suitable replacement on the current roster. (Any word on Kah?). We could use a good big man transfer.

Recruiting: After 3-4 years of basically nothing, we are finally landing players that should eventually get us back to the dance. (if not for this hope, I would say cut ties with the current leadership and start over.)

Consistency: Aside from the poor tournament performance, this team has been pretty consistent. We beat the teams that we should have beaten (sans VCU and W&M early on), and lost to the teams that we should have lost to.

Mixing it up: The faster pace on offense and the 1-3-1 zone (though I'm not sure it we were really better on offense or if this was just a result of the quality of competition. We still struggled to score against the two decent teams that we played.)

Upward trend: We were a top 75 team this year. Not where we want to be, but headed in the right direction. ("The Good", not "The Great").

The Bad

No NCAA (or even NIT): At this point, this is clearly unacceptable. (And don't get me started about the conference and how long JJ should have. Dan D'Antoni started with a worse team, at a football-centric school, has been at the job for less time than JJ, and has his team Dancing this year.)

The Schedule: Whoever is in charge of this past seasons OOC schedule needs to hand it off to someone else. This schedule was absolutely pathetic (and would have been even if VCU and Dayton were their normal selves.) When you can win 25 games and not even get an NIT bid, that tells you all you need to know about those 25 wins. If we expect an at-large bid, we need to schedule like we expect an at-large bid.

The Bench: Quite frankly, we didn't have one. I think Green is going to be a good one. I don't have the same confidence in Carver ever being more than a role player to eat up fouls and provide a little defense and rebounding, but he still has two years to develop so we'll see. Hope the incoming bigs get a little time next year because we are going to really be hurting when Porter leaves.

And we still can't beat W&M, VCU, or MTSU!!!

We have JJ and staff for another year (like it or not). This coming season needs to be NCAA's or bust. (And please put some teams on the schedule that are remotely worth going to see.)

Great post! I agree with all of that. The one thing is that I actually believe we had a bench that could provide some scoring, and they proved that. We just couldn't get them into the game.

RE: Aftermath
Great post. I will add, I think this schedule was also built to buy JJ another year or two. If we had a tougher schedule and lost to those teams (which would be likely since they'd have probably been better than WKU or WM) the "Fire Jones" crowd would be 5X larger and 100X louder. Next year should be make or break for Jones. If he cant at least get an NIT bid its time for him to go. Sadly, Im afraid his inability to recruit a front court over the last several seasons is going to come back to haunt him. Heres hoping for a transfer to save the day. If we get one, and Porter stays, I think we can be pretty good again. Id love nothing better than for JJ to have a fantastic season.

Good post for the most part. Our offense was not where we want to be, but it was a step up from what we've seen in the past. Really, the only pathetic offensive performance was the last game against WKY. 0.93 isn't great, by any means, but againt top 100 teams, it's good enought to win games when we average giving up less than .9.

MTSU (31st in defense) .94 ppp
Temple (88) .94
WKY (93) .97, .93, .79
Indiana State (118) .93
FAU (1)22 1.03, 105

I don't think the schedule was as bad as it seems. Temple had a bit of a down year; RIchmond/VCU fell off the table, and Towson dropped after their 2nd best player went out. We had a matchup scheduled with St. Bonnies (tourney team) that was replaced with Fairfield.

The other non conference games:

JMU
Indiana State (no control over)
Dayton (no control, but they had a down year)
MES
Bowling Green
Norfolk State

There are really 4 games that you can point to and say, we could/should schedule higher ranked teams and two of them are local teams (norfolk State/JMU). The administration generally gets heat if they don't schedule the local teams (VCU, WM, NSU, JMU).

I'd drop JMpoo in a heartbeat. They do nothing at all but give us a +250 (or worse) win. No need to ever schedule them. Unless we can get the NCAA to qualify that game as an exhibition like the other D3 teams. Replace them with real D1 teams, GMU, GW, or Davidson. Heck I'd take UNCW or Liberty over the pukes - or even Radford. At lease Radford tries to field a D1 basketball team. JMpoo actually had a stellar season for them, 10 wins. That means that new convo center is priced out at nearly $9million per annual win.

You say our admin gets heat if we don't schedule in state teams. I wonder why UVA and VT don't get heat if they don't schedule in state games. VT hasn't agreed to play us since we kicked their butt 4 out of 5 times. And I honestly cant remember the last time UVA played us home and home. Probably in the 90s.

Like it or not, the Ted fills up quite a bit for JMU. Familiar and they have good fan support. When getting rid of low level opponents I'd rather get rid of the ones that don't move the needle at all.

So what.

Beating a +250 hurts more than a 100 or so extra tickets sold. JMU does not bring a lot of extra ticket sales. A lot more than you realized are from season ticket holders.

let's say that they bring in 300 more seats sold. Big deal, that is less than $6,000 in revenue. Maybe 1.5-2X that in concessions. Not worth the RPI hit.
