Aftermath
After waking up this morning, I realized im still mad as hell. However its more so only directed at the coaching staff. Yes the players play the game but I'll always support the players through thick and thin. I hope for an NIT berth. The players deserve to play again. Brandan worked his tail off to get better this year. Haynes was hot garbage in this tournament but overall he vastly improved over the year and help get us to the record we had, regardless of how we got there. I want a players coach. Someone who has the ability to motivate his men but put the hammer down when need be. He doesn't have to be a recruiting mastermind if he has the right assistants but definitely needs to know his x's and o's and have the ability to make in game adjustments at anytime and not be so stubborn about change. I'll take the season for what it was worth but I wanna go back to the dance and until I'm proven wrong that doesn't seem plausible with this coach.

RE: Aftermath
The most change that we will see is for one or two of his assistants to be let go. End of story.

RE: Aftermath
I have been married to my best friend for 51 years and after yesterday's game, we have already had 3 heated discussions (not about basketball!) and we are presently not speaking! I blame all this on Jeff Jones!!! For the sake of my marriage, JJ has to go. LOL

Oh I would be surprised if we even get that much change but I'm just saying what I'd like.

How many of them 51 years were good years!?!?! Just asking... 07-coffee3

I'm about to hit year 10 but I'm still trying to figure out if she is my best friend.

In the aftermath i am also mad but my main criticism is about the crappy conference we are in. I am extremely disappointed we didn't win but unlike some I am not blaming the players or even the coach for that matter. Our players played hard but couldn't hit a shot. Our game plan was good by the coaching staff but the coaches are not shooting the ball. But this conference we are is is terrible. And I am not trying to say we lost the game because of the location but honestly, how can we expect to recruit against the competition close to our home and play a tournament in Frisco Texas where a crowd of a couple of thousand is good? I am sitting here watching a conference tournament game between UMBC and Vermont and it has a very good crowd. If we stay in this crappy conference I believe the #1 seed should host the tournament. Sure, it gives them a big advantage but at least you would have an energetic fan base at the game. And what if the #1 seed loses? Big deal, it's no worse than it is now.

As for Jeff Jones, I think the last two years ( counting this year) the staff has signed a very good group of kids, ones that will compete for the conference title. And I am not patting him on the back like some will claim I am doing. But in my opinion as long as we stay in this conference our problems are a lot bigger than just changing a coach. It's true Stansbury has brought in some big time recruits but most everybody is doubting his tactics. That's all I'll say about that.

For the moment I am focusing my frustration on this crazy basketball conference.

I whole hardheartedly agree with Jerry.

These last couple of years feel way too similar to our Sun Belt years. A geographically stupid conference. No practical rivals. Yes, I hear people say if you can't win in this supposedly weaker conference etc, etc. But being in the CUSA there's an indescribable pall that permeates everything...the players, coaches and the fans. You slowly don't care as much. As a fan, you can't enjoy the fun of an away game. A trip to the tournament is out of the question due to costs and the possibility that if you lose early you're stuck there because it's too expensive to change a flight (see Billy and I in B'ham!!). You have to spend an hour searching for where you can watch an away game. Things like that wear you down.

We moved up too fast. We sold out basketball souls for football. We should have stayed in the CAA at least 5-8 years longer. It was fun vying for a national championship and not a third or fourth tier bowl. We would have built our nice new 22,000 stadium since that's what we're getting anyway even though we went up to "Big Boy" football.

I know most of you on this board will pummel me for those sentiments but I'm a big girl and can handle it.

Not gonna pummel. I kinda agree. I'm finding as I get older the weeknight games against the F_U's of the world are harder and harder to attend. Add a couple of 8:00pm starts, this old geezer (who still works) is starting to stay home more than ever. The thrill is gone. Winning a ton of games against nobodies is a lot like eating cotton candy, great to look at, but absolutely no substance!
I'm even considering passing on basketball season tix, since it looks like you can buy single game tix for almost any game. Did we sell out any this past season? Will attendance go up next year based on the strength of a 25 win season? In most circumstances you could expect packed games next year, but there has been virtually no buzz whatsoever about the team this year. Seller said it best, slowly losing interest.

Frances, you hit the nail on the head in so many areas. Reading your message reminded me of how hard it is to watch an away basketball game. I am talking just about the logistics of trying to watch. CUSA TV is strictly hit and miss. You are really lucky if the screen doesn't freeze. Wouldn't it be nice if we could have one away game on ESPN 2 or 3 or some other real sports tv network? I know there are no bigger fans than you and Billy. Let's hope some good news will break about our conference someday soon and we can get back to enjoying some real rivals and reasonable travel schedules for our players and coaches.

Not going to pummel either. I have been a season ticket holder for basketball since I graduated in '92. I agree that CUSA games do not motivate me, but I believe in and want to continue to support the team. I am not going to give up on my season tickets, however I have "missed" more games in the last couple of years that in all others combined. Something needs to change.

Hang in there Old Dominion and Monarch 92. Our program is not a dumpster fire like some suggest, though it's definitely a bummer when we lose a tournament that was in our grasp. We need you as fans. I have been around a long time and have seen too many dumpster fires with this program. I'll never forget the Tom Young years when we couldn't even have a winning record with Chris Gatling on the team. Maybe this season is not over and we'll still have some things to cheer about. If not, we have a great nucleus of players coming back and a strong recruiting class. Let's just hope we can get out of this conference soon than later.

RE: Aftermath
She's right. I understand why we made the move though. At the time it appeared the CAA might be sinking for the last time. Our peers jumped ship, and it looked like CUSA threw us a life raft that included better TV, a $1 million dollars a year, rivalry with ECU, and a better basketball conference historically on par with the A10. Within 2 years all of that evaporated and we're in a worse place than in the CAA. The situation is as she described. Darn shame. If the A10 really is interested we should jump immediately. Wood gets paid a lot of money to know the sports landscape and keep us out of situations like the one we're in.

Going to CUSA was best long term. You never know when the chance to move up will come so you do it when you can and then figure out the rest later.
