RE: Aftermath
Yeah, JMU draws them in, plus we have played them in most sports forever. Stop with the MEAC though and go for teams like Davidson, St. Joseph, Mason, George Washington, Dayton, South Florida, Central Florida, Memphis and even if we have to do a 3-1 play Tech (they wont) Georgia Tech, Wake and why not agree to do a 2-0 and play DUKE or UNC, what the hell.

What benefit do A-10 schools have playing us?

We would get more ink and a recruiting boost if we won at Duke or UNC and a better chance at building an at large resume than we would if we went undefeated against a schedule with your teams. We could win those games in November too before Coach K and Roy gets their 18 year old McDonalds All Americans gelling. if we shoot a statistical anomily. And if we lose? No biggie, it won't hurt us. Just playing in those gyms is a dream to many of the kids we recruit. While we are at it, St. John's plays at MSG. I wonder if they'll schedule H/H with us? Hey recruit, if you come here you get a chance to play at MSG and in the Dean Dome your sophomore year. In your senior year, we are lined up to play in Rupp Arena and they don't think you are good enough to call that home. Let's show them.

We could always use a cupcake or two, just not an entire schedule full of them.

They don't want to play us.

RE: Aftermath
We did not deserve to go dancing this year. Maybe the NIT. This team lost too many of the harder contests.
But It's time for Wood Selig to wine and dine the A10 commissioner. I know this topic has been discussed over and over.
If you look at a map and consider past rivalries, this just makes too much sense.
Not to mention the A10 tourney was in DC and not Frisco TX.

(03-12-2018 08:34 AM)ODUBB35 Wrote:  Here is my "aftermath" after digesting last night.

The Good

Our Starting 5: Caver and the Stith Brothers continue to improve, but particularly the development of both Porter and Haynes has been a joy to watch. Hopefully either Green, Godwin, or Hueitt, (or a combination thereof) can fill Haynes' production. Unfortunately, Brandon's will be more difficult as I don't believe we have a suitable replacement on the current roster. (Any word on Kah?). We could use a good big man transfer.

Recruiting: After 3-4 years of basically nothing, we are finally landing players that should eventually get us back to the dance. (if not for this hope, I would say cut ties with the current leadership and start over.)

Consistency: Aside from the poor tournament performance, this team has been pretty consistent. We beat the teams that we should have beaten (sans VCU and W&M early on), and lost to the teams that we should have lost to.

Mixing it up: The faster pace on offense and the 1-3-1 zone (though I'm not sure it we were really better on offense or if this was just a result of the quality of competition. We still struggled to score against the two decent teams that we played.)

Upward trend: We were a top 75 team this year. Not where we want to be, but headed in the right direction. ("The Good", not "The Great").

The Bad

No NCAA (or even NIT): At this point, this is clearly unacceptable. (And don't get me started about the conference and how long JJ should have. Dan D'Antoni started with a worse team, at a football-centric school, has been at the job for less time than JJ, and has his team Dancing this year.)

The Schedule: Whoever is in charge of this past seasons OOC schedule needs to hand it off to someone else. This schedule was absolutely pathetic (and would have been even if VCU and Dayton were their normal selves.) When you can win 25 games and not even get an NIT bid, that tells you all you need to know about those 25 wins. If we expect an at-large bid, we need to schedule like we expect an at-large bid.

The Bench: Quite frankly, we didn't have one. I think Green is going to be a good one. I don't have the same confidence in Carver ever being more than a role player to eat up fouls and provide a little defense and rebounding, but he still has two years to develop so we'll see. Hope the incoming bigs get a little time next year because we are going to really be hurting when Porter leaves.

And we still can't beat W&M, VCU, or MTSU!!!

We have JJ and staff for another year (like it or not). This coming season needs to be NCAA's or bust. (And please put some teams on the schedule that are remotely worth going to see.)

Good post ODUBB. I strongly agree on the "no bench" comment. Probably my only real criticism this year ( aside from the conference we are in) was that Jones never developed our backcourt bench for the tournament. It was obvious we didn't have anyone to develop up front when we got past Carver, Stith, and Porter but we clearly had some options in the backcourt. There was a lot of excitement and buzz about both Hueitt and Godwin ( and in some cases Pinckney) when we got some early glimpses of them this season. It seems apparent that we were skating on thin ice all year by relying on Caver, BJ, Haynes, and Green to a smaller extent to carry the entire load on our backcourt. Even if there was some drop off in overall play it just makes no sense that we would not work to develop that depth. We had the talent to beat both MT and WKY but the way our rotations worked for us to win it meant we "HAD" to have a good game from "ALL" of our starters. That never happened against the better teams. We were talented enough to beat the lower teams when someone in our backcourt did not perform. You can look at all of our losses and one of the three in our backcourt usually didn't perform up their average. That being said I don't blame them. They all played hard every single game. It's just the nature of the game that sometimes you don't have your A game. One thing I am proud of is I feel like we came to play every game. The one exception could be the game at WKY but I was at that game and they just punched us hard early and we were coming off a very hard fought win at Marshall. After seeing all that was going on in that game I give us a pass there.

One area I disagree on a little ( not much) is the scheduling. After looking at the selections for both the NCAA and NIT I am not as convinced that the scheduling was what cost us the bid or was so bad. I say this for a couple of reasons. Number 1: us not getting to the NIT was a perfect storm. MT's loss early was huge. Not only did it kick them out of the big dance, but it gave Marshall an easy road to the the finals. WKY had a fight on their hands to beat us. It was physical and probably took a toll on them as well. Keep in mind they are not much deeper than us. If they win then we would have probably gone to NIT. Also 12 teams got the automatic bid to the NIT? I am guessing that's unheard of and there is no way most of those teams would have received a bid. My second point for thinking the scheduling was not so bad is that I just don't think it really matters in the eyes of the NCAA when it comes to the smaller schools. Look at MT this year and us the year we were first four out. The NCAA expects us smaller schools to win every game we should win. We stump our toe and we are out. It doesn't matter who we play. If we could have beaten WKY and MT at home we would have been in the conversation even with our schedule. We had no bad loses to speak of. Don't get me wrong , I would love to play some bigger names but in the end we just needed to win some bigger games on our schedule and we didn't.
All that being said, I like our returning players and our freshmen coming in next year. It's time to turn our fortunes around.

Oh, I don't think our schedule costs us a bid. We just weren't good enough.

But I would suggest that, even if we were good enough, the schedule would have hurt us. If MTSU's schedule only got them to the bubble, imagine what our schedule would do.

Also, in regards to the schedule. ODU does pretty well on attendance. but would see a bump with better scheduling. As an out-of-towner, I have no desire to drive 3 hours to watch us pound UMES. I'm probably not the only one.

RE: Aftermath
We diefinitely weren't good enough this year. No question about that. If we were, the schedule would have kept us out. We might have had to go 28-2 to have any prayer and certainly would have had to have beaten Temple and Auburn to even get away with losing 2 so we could hang our hat on the Auburn win.

Heck I'd take UNCW or Liberty over the pukes - or even Radford. At lease Radford tries to field a D1 basketball team. JMpoo actually had a stellar season for them, 10 wins. That means that new convo center is priced out at nearly $9million per annual win.
Like it or not, the Ted fills up quite a bit for JMU. Familiar and they have good fan support. When getting rid of low level opponents I'd rather get rid of the ones that don't move the needle at all.

So what.

Beating a +250 hurts more than a 100 or so extra tickets sold. JMU does not bring a lot of extra ticket sales. A lot more than you realized are from season ticket holders.

let's say that they bring in 300 more seats sold. Big deal, that is less than $6,000 in revenue. Maybe 1.5-2X that in concessions. Not worth the RPI hit.

I'm not sure you got entirely what I was saying. I'm saying that we need to drop our lower-tier schedule, but JMU should not be one of them. I'd argue holding onto both JMU and W&M because of the history alone. Fans show up for those games too, which is a better atmosphere in general and more fun to go to. Nobody cares about the extra $6k or whatever it is.

I agree, there is plenty of room to build a strong schedule and still keep JMU, W&M, VCU, and Richmond. Add the preseason tournament and that gives us 5 games to play with. Right now they are St. Joe's and perhaps Bowling Green, Towson, and Fairfield, but I don't know what those deals were. I assume Howard, UMES, Norfolk State or Mt St Mary's will be there as well. Hopefully only 1 of them next year.
