It's strange, because when i first started watching hoops, in the 1970s, the B1G was very good at winning titles.

From 1976 to 1989, the B1G won 5 national titles, and B1G teams went 5-1 in the title game. During that span the only B1G team to lose the title game was Michigan in 1976, and they lost to another B1G team.

Temper and political correctness destroyed Bobby Knight. With the ouster of Knight, Indiana never recovered. Everybody loved to hate Bobby, but he was one helluva basketball coach.

Coach Knight was arguably the best coach ever. All the other coaches who have won 3 or more titles had WAY more talent than he ever had.

Just look at 1984, when his Indiana team with nobody beat Dean Smith's UNC team with Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins.

His 1981 champs had clearly less talent than the UNC team it beat, as did his 1987 team that beat Syracuse for the title.

Nobody did more with less than Knight.

Man I still get sick every time I'm remined of that game. SU had that game in the bag with just a few seconds left with SU up maybe 7 points. Boehiem started playing stall ball and would not foul the 3 point shooter. The rest is history.

I have three of those "sicknesses" that will always haunt me, in no particular order:

1) Georgetown losing to Villanova

2) Rams losing SB to Patriots (I've been a Rams fan since 1973)

3) Orioles losing 79 WS to Pirates (Orioles fan since 1974)

All three still regularly blow up my brain, LOL.

Indiana was in decline for awhile before Knight's departure. He hadn't made it beyond the first weekend of the tournament for several years prior to his firing.

Brooks Robinson was the man! The great Orioles included the aces of Cuellar, McNally, Plamer and Dobson, and had that other Robinson as well, Frank. The '79 Orioles weren't quite that dominant on the mound.

Yes, the 79 Orioles didn't have the pitching of those late 60s/early 70s Orioles teams. The 66 team, wow!

Too bad I was too young to remember them - or the frustration of losing 2 out of 3 WS from 69-71.

So at a minimum, it will be 6,944 days that the B1G has won the men's hoops title (next years champ game on April 8, 2019).

Since the B1G won a hoops basketball title. Last time that happened, on April 3, 2000, nobody had ever heard of I-pods, I-pads, I-phones, Facebook, or Twitter, and you could have watched the game from an office in one of the Twin Towers after catching President Bill Clinton's press conference. Lebron James was a 6'3" freshman in high school, and somewhere on the Michigan campus, Tom Brady was getting the bad news that his draft stock placed him around the fifth round, so it would probably be a good idea to make sure he finished up his class work and got his degree.

Will the streak end tonight?
we have won 3 titles in that time....

73 was around when i first followed baseball. My older brother was a huge O's fan.

73 Orioles vs A's... Game 4 at Oakland, Balt down 2-1 in games, and 4-1 in the 7th... Andy Etchebarren hit an unlikely go-ahead 3-run HR to force a Game 5. Catfish shutout Baltimore for the Series.

73 Mets has amazing pitching... Seaver, Matlack, Koosman... the just-passed Rusty Staub was fantastic vs Cincinnati (who didn't have Gary Nolan that year), but Staub slammed into the wall at Shea and couldn't throw. Game 3, Rose picked a fight with Bud Harrrelson in a Mets blowout win. Game 4, after Rose was being pelted with batteries in LF, Sparky took team off the field... Mays, Seaver and Yogi went out to LF to plead with fans to stop. Rose 12th inning HR forced Game 5.

Watching as a kid i just remember an insane NY crowd, hot dog wrappers flying around, jets overhead with deafening noise drowning out announcers... very very exviting and memorable to an impressionable young fan like me.

Crazy World Series, Felix Millan error in Game 1, Mike Andrews errors in Game 2, Finley acting like a nut... Campaneris and Jackson HR to win Game 7.

74 Orioles were 7 GB late August but went 34-5 to close out season and overtake Sox and Yanks. Versus A's, bounced in Game 4 though Oak got only 1 hit late, a Reggie RBI double... Cuellar had walked a ton early to give A's 1-0 lead... O's challenged in 9th... final out was Baylor striking out while NBC cameras were showing replay or something.

79 Orioles... had huge Game 4 rally late, crazy inning where Pittsburgh intentionally walked .184 hitting Billy Smith before former NC State hoops champion and now pitcher Tim Stoddard hit a single. No offense back in Games 6 and 7, only getti g 1crun on a Rich Dauer HR... Weaver in 9th seemed to have made 7 pitching changes.

...ok i'm outta breath...

GREAT ERA FOR BASEBALL!!!

i think Coleman missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 15 seconds left, just before Keith Smart's shot. Shot went in with like still 3 or 4 seconds left. SU didn't use a timeout, and back then the clock didn't stop after a made basket w under a minute. Freakin Seikaly just stared at the bouncing ball like an idiot for several seconds, instead of picking it up, and i'm not sure they even inbounded.

Not sure Ryan even started much in 69... 3rd starter was Gary Gentry... Ryan relieved in WS Game 3 to "save the day" as a Topps card termed it the next year.

My Topps card years were the Mantle and Maris and Mazeroski era. But you could get a lot off of the back of that card. And yeah, Gentry rings a bell now that you mention him. Tommy Agee was big in that series in the field. It was a great series. It was right up there with the series that featured Denny McLain's Tigers and Bob Gibson's Cards.

Yes, the 79 Orioles didn't have the pitching of those late 60s/early 70s Orioles teams. The 66 team, wow!

Too bad I was too young to remember them - or the frustration of losing 2 out of 3 WS from 69-71.

Well the '69 Mets were just meant to be, and truly Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, and Nolan Ryan are a pretty strong mound as well.

To show how smart we were in those days, we used to attach baseball cards to the spokes on our bikes with clothespins to make noise. No telling how many Mantle rookie cards were destroyed doing that!

Thanks but whoa, with all the fights you and i have had over the years, do u really think thats a good idea? Lol...
04-cheers

Yeah I think it would be fun... I probably love baseball more than basketball now with all the stats(big surprise there I'm sure for you).

Thanks for the invitation. At some point i will check it out.

Are you a Nats fan? Before they arrived in DC, what team did you root for?

Yeah I'm a Nats fan(talk about playoff failures). Prior to that was Orioles. Went to many a game at Memorial Stadium before Camden Yards opened up(fun neighborhood to get to). Lots of great players- Ripken, Murray, Flanagan, Boddicker, Tippy Martinez(and Dennis), with good old Earl Weaver- Pitching, Defense, and the 3 run homer. Still remember watching them on HTS.

How smart? My buddies and I only attached the duplicates of non star players to our spokes. Duplicates of star players were trading material. I bet you had a basket attached to your handle bars. It was the best way to get your ball and glove to the field where you played. I found a way to put my bat over the rear fender with the handle pointed down toward the chain guard.

We all did our chores in the mornings and played ball all afternoon and until it was too dark to see the ball. Those are still among my most cherished memories in life.
