That interlocking NI though, you wouldn't miss it.....

Unfortunately you would have to explain to 99% of America what it is. Doesn't exactly self-explain well.

My personal favorite, though it doesn't project the brand very well.

I think it would project the brand well if we stuck with it instead of having different helmets every week. Especially if you had the Huskie head on one side and NIU on the other.

ding! ding! ding! there you go. theres a reason you know the gold helmet is Notre Dame. It doesn't say Notre Dame, but its been around so long, you know its Notre Dame. Michigan's helmet? doesn't say Michigan, but unless you're color blind*, you know its Michigan. Why? Its always been that way. Most teams dont have their names on the helmet. I don't get why we have such a fear that no one will know who we are unless it says Northern Illinois University or NIU on it.

* FWIW Princeton has the same design.

I can never tell which team is ND. They change their uni colors and sometimes do the dark blue or white and I'm looking for Kelly green. Then they play Army and it looks like a scrimmage when they have the same colors just offset.

I agree with you, BG, for the most part. My faves were the same interlocking NI in white against a red background.

Yes, we have 3 official colors: red, black.....and in recent years it seems that white has been added to the mix. White has sort of become the fashionable color du jour.

RE: football helmets
Team colors used to be traditional, and for some schools they still are. However, some schools feel that they need to add or change colors to get people interested in their teams. I noticed that Ball State has recently added black to their colors. They used to be simply red and white. I believe that Miami O has also done this. Maybe they just want to look like us.

white is added bc teams visiting teams have to wear a lighter distinguishable color. White is usually the default. It hasn't been recent years either. we've always had white jerseys.

i'd be more upset at the red, if your looking to get riled up. It used to be garnet.

I've always been a fan of this too, but they've updated this, I think impart because it was often referred to as the NIU swastika. I've heard this from multiple people at other schools as an undergrad.

Sure, as an away jersey. But, I'm talking about home jerseys, where white has now been added to the mix, at least a couple years ago. I think to avoid an identity crisis, STF decreed last year that the home jersey will be the traditional red and black. Let's see what it is this year.

i don't think i've ever seen white added to the home jerseys, other than to outline numbers. schools in the south will wear white during home games in the early fall bc of the hot weather, but i don't think we've ever worn white at home.

I'm pretty sure they did at least once. When they played Ball State I kept forgetting who was who. Though it's possible that was in Muncie. Can't remember anymore.

Yeah, I do recall there was one game where they wore the all whites as the home team. Just can't remember which one. I do remember my wife and I commenting on how ludicrous it was.

Officially it was NEVER garnet, Northern Illinois' official colors were Cardinal and Black, and that was cardinal like the clergy not the bird. The last time NIU football had its true school colors was under Bill Mallory and over the years, especially in the 1990s, the cardinal got bastardized into red. At one point in the 1920s, the teams were even referred to as the Cardinals because of the jerseys, but in 1940, a four-man committee of George "Chick" Evans, Harold Taxman, Walter Lorimer and Henry Telman came up with the Huskies nickname and made specific reference to the singular H-U-S-K-I-E, as in Huskie victory, Huskie touchdown, to differentiate it from the word Husky.

As long as we're on the subject of helmets and uniforms, here's the link regarding the ILL-ness' latest try to get attention:
