So NIU doesn't own the NIU logo of NIU, and can't put an NIU logo on NIU merchandise?

Ohhhhh, NIU. Don't stop surprising me. 03-lmfao

Somebody has to own it! If not, is it in the public domain? Can we get T-shirts and other stuff made wit it?

How can you not own one of your own historical logos? That was the logo when I was at NIU. It was never on a helmet, but it was on a ton of merchandise in the 1970s.

Yes, it was on the helmet for four years. The upright "fighting Huskie" was on the helmet from 1976 thru 1979.

My all-time favorite remains the interlocking NI (see my avatar).

Pleaseeee Bring back this logo for an alternate look on the football helmets! You won’t regret that decision! Take a look at NC state’s success with their retro logo.

I wrote to STF and suggested that he come up with a helmet with his picture on it. He thanked me for the suggestion, said that it is a good one, and that he will strongly consider doing it.

i love the retro huskie, bought a t-shirt last year with the image. I did not like the idea of the old school huskie on a helmet, but that version (nice work) is tight. Would be cool maybe as a one-off for homecoming or next time we host a P5 opponent.

The interlocking NI would be an awesome throwback. White letters on a cardinal helmet.

I don't like giant logos on helmets, but somehow the retro ones don't bug me.

Clearly my retro love > my giant logo hate.

I don't think the boxing Huskie (either full or just a head) would show up too well on TV.

That interlocking NI though, you wouldn't miss it.....

Unfortunately you would have to explain to 99% of America what it is. Doesn't exactly self-explain well.

My personal favorite, though it doesn't project the brand very well.

I think it would project the brand well if we stuck with it instead of having different helmets every week. Especially if you had the Huskie head on one side and NIU on the other.

ding! ding! ding! there you go. theres a reason you know the gold helmet is Notre Dame. It doesn't say Notre Dame, but its been around so long, you know its Notre Dame. Michigan's helmet? doesn't say Michigan, but unless you're color blind*, you know its Michigan. Why? Its always been that way. Most teams dont have their names on the helmet. I don't get why we have such a fear that no one will know who we are unless it says Northern Illinois University or NIU on it.

* FWIW Princeton has the same design.

I suggest we have no name or logo on the helmet - just a map of the meandering Kishwaukee River. After a while, everyone will know who we are.

I liked that one too. A couple years ago, NIU was supposedly going to do throwback uniforms to each decade during each home game, starting with the sixties unis that were easy enough to recreate: just black helmets with numbers and stripes. The later throwback uniforms were not "throwback" enough. I would have loved to see the return of the boxing Huskie or the red helmets of the eighties.

The same people who decide what they say. You don't know who they are, but you know what they say.

Cohesive and consistent branding would be good!

Tell me which of these you could not instantly know?

The Notre Dame and Michigan examples were good. So would Penn State, USC, Wisconsin, Iowa, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, Fla State, Ohio State, Miami, Virginia Tech, Stanford, Clemson ...
