RE: Conference basketball tournaments ...
Vermont loses at home at buzzer to Maryland-Baltimore County. Takes one 1st round game that would’ve come down to the end and turns it into a 30 point shellacking next week.

The AAC isn't a "four bid" league. The AAC hired Wichita because it was a failing hoops league.
I guess if Duke and North Carolina joined the AAC next year, the AAC would have two more teams ranked and in the tourney. But it wouldn't be the AAC's doing, just Duke and UNC's.
If SMU and UCF don't have injuries, you're right, it might not be a 4 bid league. It may have been a 5 bid league. Conferences don't get teams in tournament, teams get themselves in the tournament. The AAC allowed with the schedule to have 4 teams finish with 12 or more wins in conference play and a 5th with 10 wins and a 6th with 9 wins. 3 of those 6 teams took care of business OOC. Those are going to be in the tourney easily. If Temple had been one of the good conference teams- they would have been in there easily as well.... Same with UCF and SMU.
I think it would be pretty easy to see the AAC eventually settle as a 4-5 bid league pretty regularly. Especially if the teams like Memphis and UConn recover to where they typically are. Cincy and Wichita aren't going anywhere- and Houston looks like they are setting up for a good run....
It should have been a 4-bid league regardless, Temple had the resume but didn't win the games they should have. Add in a potential bid stealer like Memphis and the AAC becomes a 5-bid league.
The AAC "should", and was expected to be, a consistent 4-bid league from its inception. But it has failed to be, and amazingly, likely won't be this year even with ringer/mercenary WSU added to the mix.
Something just isn't clicking there.
When teams suffer injuries like SMU and others choke like Temple, these things happen. That and they watered down the league for the sake of a meaningless conference championship game. Don't add ECU (who isn't even good at the sport they strive to be good at) Tulane and Tulsa and suddenly the league is much, much stronger in both sports.

Davidson just beat Rhode Island to steal an additional bid for the A-10. Bubble just shrunk.
