Blazer Almanac - March 9
March 9

Well the seasons over. But Blazer Almanac and Today in Blazer History will continue, at least until the end of March, because we have tournament games to review.

UAB has only played 4 games on March 9. The Blazers are 1-3.

1995 - UAB entered the 1995 Great Midwest Tournament, as the 6th seed, out of 7 teams. This was the last tournament for the Great Midwest and it had been announced that the Great Midwest would be merging with the Metro Conference to form a new league, There was also unhappy speculation and rumors that Gene Bartow might be stepping down. He said that this season, UAB's first losing season would not have a bearing on his decision. He said some players might not be invited back though.

As the 6th seed, UAB was unfortunate enough to draw the home team Marquette, who had beaten UAB twice that year. UAB led for 13 minutes of the second half but with 7 minutes to go, Marquette went on a 20-5 run. The Blazers shot 25% for the game and was 1-11 from three point range. The Blazers lost 55-46 and finished the season 14-16. It was Bartow's first losing season since 1974-75, his one year at Illinois. It was only his third losing season in his entire career.

However, officially, it was not a losing season for UAB and Coach Bartow. Auburn was forced to forfeit its wins by the NCAA, so UAB's official record that year is 15-15.

2006 - UAB was ranked #24 in the country and was the 2nd seed entering the 2006 CUSA tournament in Memphis. Their first opponent was the 10th seed, SMU who had advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Rice. UAB's swarming defense forced 17 first half turnovers by SMU and Blazers led by 10 at the break. They cruised in the second half and led by as many as 25. UAB won 69-55.

2013 - UAB closed out the 2012-13 regular season with a game at Memphis, ranked #25. UAB trailed by as much as 17 points in the first half, but they opened the second half with a 16-2 run and cut the lead to one point with 14:41. Memphis then woke up and began to pull away, leading by as much as 24 points. Memphis won 86-71. Jordan Swing led UAB with 19 points.

2017 - UAB was the 7th seed in the 2017 CUSA tournament and playing in their home town. Their first round opponent was the 7th seed Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. The Blazers shot poorly in the first half, shooting 6 of 29 and trailed 31-18 at the half. They shot a little better in the second half, but could not overcome their poor first half performance and lost 69-57. UAB finished the season 17-16.
