Next basketball coach
Kevin Stallings? I think he could fall back to mid major type school, like Croce did. He's from IL and coached at ISU before I believe.

When will this press release be sent out?

“I want to express my appreciation to Coach Montgomery for his commitment to our program,” athletic director Sean Frazier said in a statement. “In moving forward, we have tremendous expectations for our men's basketball program at NIU and I believe we can achieve great things within the Mid American t Conference and nationally. A national search for the next NIU head coach will begin immediately.”

We may never see it. There may eventually be a search for a new coach, but we'll never know about it. MAYBE there will be a press conference after the new coach is hired.

If not, then how about this release?

I want to express my appreciation to AD Sean Frazier for his commitment to our program,” Acting University President Lisa Freeman said in a statement. “In moving forward, we have tremendous expectations for our athletic programs at NIU and I believe we can achieve great things within the Mid American Conference and nationally. A national search for the next NIU Athletic Director will begin immediately.”

She went on to say in a prepared text, "I have been honored to serve as the Acting President of Northern Illinois University (NIU). since June 2017, and because the process of finding a permanent president has been moving along as slow as molasses, it was patently clear that I needed to act.

I assumed the acting presidency with eyes wide open and an understanding of the hard work ahead. The current alarming drop off in interest in our athletic programs, and specifically the tumultuous seemingly endless coming and going of athletes in men's basketball points to an inflection point for the university and its Athletics. During these very challenging times, I will need to sustain NIU’s focus on our student athletes and their success, to reaffirm our commitment to ethical leadership, and to lead change in order to ensure the university’s long term sustainability as a high level university with a robust campus life that includes competitive and highly entertaining athletics.

We will seek an AD who will be guided by principles of mutual respect, hard work, and results. We will also adhere to a very simple proposition, and one I believe very deeply – that the strength of NIU comes from the bottom up, and not the top down. Accordingly, we will cultivate and actively seek student participation at events, along with participation from fans in our local community and in the entire northern Illinois area. We will focus on our fans and athletes, and not on TV networks or conference. And ALL are welcome on the Huskie bandwagon.

We will move forward together forward. Each and every day. It need not be a giant leap. But it will not be a step backwards, or even a stand still. Our perfect candidate to bring us academic and athletic success and pride in the pack is out there. And soon, we will find that individual. I look forward to your help in reaching all of our goals.

Go Huskies!

What happens if Monty isn't fired and leads the basketball program to success in the next two years? How will ya'll react?

This is such a ridiculous question/attitude.

If NIU suddenly become successful under Monty I'm sure everyone here would be happy. The program has been in shambles for 20 years. The fact is that they are underachieving, boring to watch (outside of the games when teams let German get to the basket), and not well coached. None of that will change. They ranked absolute DFL in assists per game in Monty's 7th season. It's a joke. But yeah, I hope they turn it around and win 25 games next year

I only asked because I see a lot of people on this board seem to write off NIU coaches regardless of their performance.

Also, don't act completely surprised about NIU being last in assists. The teams two best players are ball dominant scorers.

You say that like it’s a good thing. You can’t have your two best players, especially one being a PG, just looking to score all the time. The rest of the team becomes disengaged. Your best players have to make those around them better to be a good team. 40-50 pats a game from two best players but no assists makes for a lot of 10-20 pt losses.

I was just stating a fact. There wasn't a ton of perimeter offense on the rest of the team, and they didn't typically run in transition. That led to small assist numbers.

It's not an egregious situation though. NIU finally has talent. Now, they need to continue to build around it and develop. If there was any season to attack Monty, this isn't the one. In all reality, last year was more disappointing.

Is Buffalo’s assistant in the market for a head coaching job? Something is in the water at Buffalo that we need in our basketball program. We won’t get Oates, but it’s like plug and play over there.

Monty’s signature win over Buffalo hit the jackpot - he’s coming back!

But if NIU was open, I’d hire Loyola assistant Bryan Mullins. He will be a coaching star within 5 years. Loaded with AAU connections and Loyola plays the same stout defense he played at SIU 10 years ago - the Mullins effect.

He'll be coaching the Ramblers next year when Moser leaves for a lucrative job

Loyola got good after Mullins got there. I think he's a huge reason.

I just looked him up. He would be a great coach. Just his player development alone would be a nice change.

Excerpts from the press release being prepared now
....Given fiscal constraints being experienced by NIU and colleges across the country....
....we have decide to part ways with Coach Montgomery, and wish well......
....in a financially creative move, Rod Carey will now assume head coaching duties for men's basketball, in addition to continuing his football duties....

We'd have a whole bunch of players that would go the whole game without scoring a point....but they'd have no turnovers either. 05-stirthepot
