NIU Basketball&Athletics/Clearing The Air
German, Bradley, Key, Thorpe, Daow, James basically the core team will all be back. Transfers will be likely Hamilton, Hayes and maybe a couple others. Monty will be the coach that is definite. If Monty does not win in the 2018-19 season he will be let go that is a fact! Winning doesn’t mean 500 either. I supported Monty and apologized for him and I was wrong. As far as these attacks on Sean Frazier I don’t get it? We asked him to schedule better games and he got it done. He is not a Dictator, it is my opinion that he would let Monty go if he could. There are factors involved that are preventing that. Most of you don’t understand the level of financial problems NIU is facing. I would not be surprised if soon we here about a sport being cut! If I was betting on it I would put it at 95% that it happens. Frazier comes from Wisconsin so he is all about winning. He hit a home run with Lisa Carlsen, common sense says he would make a change with Monty and bring in the Men’s version of Lisa if he could. Compher and Phillips both knew from the get go they wouldn’t be staying at NIU. While Frazier or no AD is perfect it’s very clear to anyone that has spent anytime with Sean that he is where he wants to be(NIU). Getting alcohol at games was his doing and it has made football and basketball games better. I know many hate the ESPN deal but that wasn’t his idea and he can’t just pull NIU out of it. In summary, just like with our own personal decisions sometimes and very often we have to make some of those decisions with our hands tied behind our backs. Things aren’t always in our control. PS. On a positive note The Convo will have a new video board.

Hamilton would do best if he moves to DII or DIII...
Looks to be a nice young man but looked out of his element when he did play
If he does stay he needs a lot of work...if Maric had stayed I am sure that Hamilton would have been redshirted

At least the team will not have to start from scratch again next year. If Monty can't win with that returning cast and a few others, then he should be gone. Thanks for clearing the air. I appreciate your insight.

A new video board! That needs a post all unto itself. Thanks for sharing.

I'm with you on STF and probably in the minority. The game experiences have gotten better and the students and fan base has gotten smaller. Now the quality of basketball has not improved and resources are being severely cut. What is he to do? I understand people want more and better but it is a catch-22. He seems to be changing the things he can control except for the ticket office. Not sure I understand why that is such a disaster.

You started this thread at 4:27---well after Geno's tweet. You added the "lol". Please clarify---you stand by your initial post here or you have some reservations due to Geno's tweet. Geno's tweet was a good two hours before your post. Please clarify, 222.

I just saw Geno’s tweet a few minutes ago after I started this thread. I am being told he’s staying so I’m still going with that. Seeing his post a few minutes ago though made me wonder if I got bad info(lol).

Thanks---I trust your info----he very well may be directing his words at the others leaving without throwing them under the bus as individuals. Appreciate it.

Here's something for everyone to consider in the future, and Josh Tolentino should learn from this too. A lot of guys talk about transfering in the heat of the moment right after the end of a tough season but not many actually do it. You'll recall that we had inside information that the whole football team was transfering last year and in the end only two guys who had actually played ended up leaving: Shane Evans because he had graduated and Brandon Mayes who was basically invited to leave. Transfering is a big deal and most fantasize about it but don't really want the uncertainty that comes with it.

Fact: Sean has had numerous interviews at other schools. I think his stay at NIU is more to the fact that he wasn't offered anywhere else, other than he wants to be here. Next time you talk to him ask him about Temple in 2015!

Never once did I read "that the whole football team was transfering (cq) last year" nor did I read that half the roster or even half of returning starters were transferring.
However, NIU basketball has had undergraduate players on the roster not return following each of Monty's previous seasons.
Do any of you visit other MAC message boards? Check out BobcatAttack.com and OU fan displeasure (Official MAC Tourney First Round Thread) over their coach:
One guy posts: What will you remember most about this season?
- Worst home loss ever?
- Most points given up in a MAC game ever?
- Not showing up for the win or done match-up against your supposed arch-rival? Or better yet, assuming that your arch-rival wouldn't make adjustments after you beat them twice in the regular season?
(2) of the (4) Phillips era seasons have ended in one and done MAC tournament exits. (0) of the the (4) season have resulted in a Saturday Cleveland appearance.
It simply is not good enough. Please spare me the apathy that I am sure will come. This University and this fan base deserves competitive competence

That's in regard to this past year for OU's Phillips, apply those same questions to Monty's seven years. BTW, that OU coach is 6-2 versus Monty.

Then you need to read better because it was posted more than once by a players father that many key players were leaving. It was postioned as a team mutiny. I could dig those posts back up if you like. They created a hysteria similar to what Josh Tolentino's tweets started this week. My point is that stuff is baloney, players blowing off steam, and needs to be taken with a shaker of salt.

Is this Geno commenting about those leaving? Do what is best with their lives? Can only hope and speculate at this time. Also I am in favor of the more difficult football schedule and glad STF has worked for scheduling better teams. Basically a financial need but will be interesting how NIU fares against P5.

The last 5 years haven't been great economically for Illinois or niu. Enrollment is way down and the state is in financial crisis. Those are not STF's fault. Losing employees will only make the ticket office worse. I don't blame him for the problems we are in.
As far as basketball, let's wait and see how this plays out before jumping to conclusions.

As far as basketball, let's wait and see how this plays out before jumping to conclusions.

Quit connecting the state's financial woes to what hasn't been happening on the basketball court. Basketball players are not being short-changed pre-game meals, practice and game gear, air fare often in place of a bus, and so on.
The ticket office IS under his control. Perhaps you don't want to blame him for the problems, but then blame him for not creating solutions here instead of picking a fight with UCF and pushing a G5 play-off that didn't have support.
You say as far as basketball, let's wait and see......it's been seven years, what are waiting for? Good God the standard argument was give somebody a chance to have their own players, i.e., five seasons. You keep using the phrase don't jump to conclusions in multiple threads, you still don't see the forest for the trees? Players other than from deep off the bench leaving every year, never getting more than single digit wins in a conference that isn't exactly respected for basketball, unable to get above .500 despite mediocre home scheduling, etc. State financial woes are not an excuse for all the things armour248 questioned.
With or without German and others, how much of an uphill remains to get NIU from the MAC West cellar to even the MAC tourney semis? Yes, you save the buyout money but you lose that many more fans, tickets, concessions, etc., to delay a rebuilding process that is now a necessity. You're throwing more money down a deeper hole. What's the business expression about cutting your losses?
