RE: NIU Basketball&Athletics/Clearing The Air
I honestly think if the athletic department Would actually come out publicly with some positive news, actual progress (how much has been raised for nutrition center) or upgrades (scoreboard) it would ease a lot of people's animosity towards athletics since all we have had lately is negative news or lack of any news IMO. Between an average football season and another bad basketball season need to come out with some positives to keep fans and More importantly donors interested.

Yep, where are those newsletters we used to get? Those cost very little and keep people in the loop as to what's happening. I do hear from Lisa Carlsen each week via e-mail, and Women's Basketball does put out several newsletters in the offseason.

I mean the nutrition center is something that will get done sooner than later and is something I would imagine some donors would be willing to donate to ( I know I would be) Haven’t heard about any way to do so though.

the nutrition center is something ... donors would be willing to donate to ( I know I would be) Haven’t heard about any way to do so though.

When Dtownboys, dekalb222, or thxjoenovak maintain that STF and his administration are doing all they can to move NIU forward, the above are examples of why people have questions.
STF and athletics choose to operate out of the public eye and therefore fuel some of the animosity. Here we have an individual like HuskiePride12 expressing willingness to donate for something like the nutrition center and yet "haven't heard about any way to do so."
As to actual progress being made on projects, apparently they're not making much progress, hence nothing to announce. Newsletters or weekly e-mails mainly cost time and effort (see Dog Fan's reference to Carlsen). Obviously dekalb222, STF has become familiar enough with you that you're able to get the guy to "listen and talk shop", but he does not respond that way with others. Both Groth and Phillips were known for their presence and "pressing the flesh" but STF is not.
How much time elapsed between when new football assistants were mentioned on here before an actual release? Those coaches were at a minimum, working here for a couple weeks, heck some of them may have already relocated with families by then for all we know.
The whole women's soccer scenario, no release on not renewing the coach, no contact or consultation with numerous area alums in the hiring process, and ultimately a hire of an individual who will hopefully far exceed her experience and qualifications.
Men's basketball enlisted Brad Hoey to have an alumni event and the attendance was mediocre. Those things were started by Mike Korcek back when he was still employed and continued to exist as an actual game probably because of the respect and contacts he had with alums. It's another example of STF and NIU athletics not exhibiting enough genuine interest in the past and alums to make something continue to work.
Not one of these things is dependent on the sad state of Illinois financially or budget limitations.
No offense dekalb222, you said to "stop bringing our Huskie family down from within" and yet that is exactly what this administration did with the women's soccer program. Regardless of how many people on here could care less about women's soccer, even the departed coach deserves credit for earlier this year having members of the initial MAC championship team back and recognized at a match. However that was accomplished because he involved one of Korcek's assistants (Robert Hester), who was known and respected by the alumnae and who kept in touch with them. Beyond this mention, if you polled STF or the administration, they have no idea who Hester is or what he did.

+1. You've said it all and said it well.

Here's something interesting: Several years ago I attended an NIU basketball game at UIC. I bought the tickets through UIC. Since that game, I have been getting e-mails and a few calls about UIC and its basketball program and, of course, asking me to buy more tickets. I even got a couple newsletter type mailings. For quite a while, I was getting much more information from UIC than NIU.

I don't believe anyone says that all that can be done is being done. Everyone can always do better and I've often recommended improvements when I have a chance to interact with staff. I believe the point is that it isn't an easy task but no matter what the administration does, people are finding ways to complain. Usually not even constructively and that gets old. Going though life mad at everything is not my philosophy.

And as far as the nutrition center and not knowing how to donate goes, I think you are totally wrong. There has been countless mentions for the center. Especially through the campaign to sustain. Donating and directing where your donation goes is very easy.
