RE: Coaching Carousel
Why would Capel taking the Pitt job preclude him from being the next Duke HC? Think he wouldn't leave Pitt at the drop of a hat the moment K retires?
Pitt better have a damn good buyout clause in that contract.

No, certainly not. The prevailing thought is that he would step into the position. He was the HC-in-waiting in my mind. Pitt is 2 years away from being top half of their conference...just seems like an odd move to me. Why go somewhere you hope to compete in 2-3 years when Duke is going to be open in ~4 years.

I’m not sold that Duke would offer that seat to Capel. The times he coached when K had medical issues the team seemed lost and underperformed. It’s not like Duke lacks alumni in the coaching ranks.

IMO this move shows he wasn't confident he was next in line at Duke. If he doesn't do a great job at Pitt, there is no way he gets hired at Duke. This is a huge risk since Pitt has never been very good. Make or break job.

Agreed.... I would like to see it go to Quin Snyder... but could also see Bobby Hurley, Woj, or Chris Collins get a hard look.

Capel did well at the mid major level, rode the coat tails of Blake Griffin for a few good years at OK and fell on his face after Blake left. As others mentioned, Duke seemed to play uninspired when he was the interim when K was out. I'm not convinced he was the next up, and i think this move signals he wasn't either

Yeah. Agree. I think Collins, Hurley, and Woj have better shots.
And all that is assuming they’ll want to stay in the K coaching tree, but there’s no reason at this point to think they wouldn’t.

Yep. Pitt is a monster risk. The way he finished at OU post Griffin combined with his small time at the helm with all of Duke’s talent, I don’t see this working out for him.

I'd be surprised to see Quin in the college ranks again. Replacing a legend is not an easy task, and Doug has already advised Chris not to follow Coach K. It will be interesting. I say give it to Hurley so I can hate the next guy as much as I do Coach K

I would think him or Collins have the best shot at it so far.

Perhaps if they don’t go with the K coaching tree. They would get skewered by Duke alumni and fans for that though, especially given Bennett’s tournament record. It’s not impressive for a coaching pos like that of Duke. It’s going to take A LOT for Duke to risk pissing off their fan base and alumni by abandoning the K tree. I just don’t see a candidate out there they’d be willing to take that risk with.

Tommy Amaker could very well be the one to replace K when the time comes.

That would be a huge gamble for Duke. I think they would have to get turned down by several Duke guys first, and they would have to be committed to hiring a K disciple.
I don't think it would happen, but Brey would be an interesting option.

Seriously, can you envision Bennett berating an official on the sideline while dropping F bombs everywhere? There is a legacy to continue in Durham.

RE: Coaching Carousel
Levelle Moton interviewed with ECU yesterday... He would be a great hire. Even though I like the C.B. Mcgrath hire a lot (still do), was a little disappointed that Jimmy didn't have him in for at least an interview last year. He has what it takes to turn that program around.
