I guess it depends on how the tax is levied, but I doubt this is going to equate to $5 on a leased vehicle.
I think passing this bill is great because it puts everything squarely in the lap of Birmingham City leadership to make this pass or fail, and they can't blame the rest of the state when they screw it up. That doesn't mean this tax is going to be making nearly what they're projecting it to make.
Edit: It should also be noted that where many people live in Jefferson County, myself included, driving to "another county to save $5.00" is a 5-10 minute drive. I would absolutely drive that to save even $5.
Ha, can't say that I blame you for that. Being thrifty does have advantages.

I'm not sure how the 3% tax is collected on a lease, but it could turn into a competitive disadvantage for dealerships in Jefferson Co.
Most of the dealerships in the Birmingham area are in Jefferson County. There's only a few in Shelby County. No one even thinks about tax rates when they buy car anyway. It won't be a big deal.

Assuming someone gets an awful 20 miles to a gallon, then that person would need to drive 40-50 miles before paying more in gas than saving $5. Since the savings are likely going to be much higher than $5 since the tax is likely to be based on the life of the lease, I'm not sure where the contention is here.

Ummm no it costs more than the price of gas to operate a vehicle.

I mean, this is true, but now we're splitting hairs. If someone is driving a vehicle to go lease a different vehicle, then it's likely they don't really care about any costs other than getting to their destination to make that lease happen. We can talk about what if's all day long, but the only known variable is the gas it takes to get to the dealership, so that's the only variable that matters in such a conversation. If you would like to adjust my numbers to 30-40 miles to compensate for "wear and tear," then so be it. That doesn't really change what I said.
I'm just saying the assumptions are wrong on how much revenue this will bring in. Not sure why y'all think that's so contentious. The main part of getting this bill through, in my view, is that it puts everything squarely in the City's lap, and that's a good thing. It's just foolish to think the lease portion isn't going to affect local businesses.

When do you think the official vote by the city council will happen?

The council meets every Tuesday so it could be as soon as next week, but I doubt they move that fast. It may also have to go back through the budget committee which would add another week to the process.

Once city leaders can finally accept the permanent loss of building a regionally competitive MPF at the Civic Center, the way will be cleared for city funding of the smaller BJCC facility. It means accepting the end of a decades old dream as being too large for this city and this state to make a reality. RIP Joe Volker, your vision is not ours.

What exactly are you expecting Birmingham to bring in that needs something the size of what is in Atlanta?

I believe Mr Jagger said it best
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find you get what you need, oh yeah

Competing with Atlanta is a mid20th century dream that is Gone with the Wind. We are now preparing to compete with Huntsville, Montgomery and perhaps Mobile. We will not know our exact competition until we actually have built (and renovated) something with which to compete and see whom we can attract. By the end of the next decade we should have our answer.
