A building that has 10 events a year will not change an area. It also won't pay for the building. So hopefully Birmingham has plans for utilization of the new stadium more then how they currently use Legion.

There will be event space inside the stadium that can be rented year-round, along with 15+ new events identified that can't utilize the BJCC Arena or Legion Field.

Couple of side notes, I think I read where the field will be field turf, I'd prefer natural grass so the stadium can be used for international soccer as well.

The other note is this, Birmingham is the metro area of stadiums. We have Legion Field, Hoover Met, Regions Field, Rickwood Field, the numerous college baseball/softball/football stadiums of various sizes, could include Lawson Field, Pelham Civic Complex currently has hockey and the BJCC. Also have Bartow and Hanna Center at Samford. All that before the new stadium is built, and I'm sure I've missed a couple buildings.

There should be events and sporting events continuously in this area.

Clark said the stadium will be natural grass.

Also, I believe the full House will vote on the bill tomorrow.

With the exception of Rickwood Field and Lawson Field, there are tons of events at tons of those venues. None of them support the same kinds of events that can be held at an open air football stadium. The BJCC facility would not be duplicative of most of that capacity.

Only when the financing is set up in final form can the design phase of the stadium approach final form. The nature of the playing surface is just one of the design features to be determined later. There are also many of the fan centric "bells and whistles" on posted "wish lists" that can't be assured until final design based on final financing is settled upon. Even then they will probably be prioritized according to perceived demand and balanced against costs.

Whether it has grass or artificial turf will dictate the events that happen in the facility, which will dictate the revenues it generates, which dictates what kind of facility can be afforded, which dictates the financing.

Whether it has grass or turf is something that can be decided well in advance of any other design decisions.

The stadium will have natural grass. It's a priority for landing several events the BJCC looks to host.

Various agricultural schools have developed varieties of grass suitable for today's stadium use. Most modern grass fields use a type of "prescription turf" that uses a concrete base covered with sand (for better drainage with pumps) and topped by a layer of soil to hold and secure the root system of the grass. They want to avoid a repeat of the famous "Mud Bowl" AU vs Bama game of the Kenny Stabler era. Back then much of the grass was usually dead by late November so the dirt was painted green to look like grass on TV, but heavy rains turned the field into a "mud-rassling pit".

Of the facilities listed, the only one that will hold UAB Football is Legion Field. The many inadequacies of Legion Field have been discussed to death here a hundred times over. We play there because we have no realistic alternative.

The various baseball/softball fields are not really suitable for "events" other than those games. The Met is big enough to do some, perhaps, but I don't know that I remember many being scheduled there. Regions is a purpose built minor league stadium, although it has meeting space, and has hosted a few other events.

Pelham Civic Center hosts some stuff. BJCC obviously hosts conventions and concerts as well as hoops. Samford has hosted some events at Hannah - but they are a private school, and who/what they host and how often is their business. Same at Bartow, although it is public university space.

90% of that list I don't know of any demands for their use for anything other than the athletic events they were built for. I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. If you are implying that the area has plenty of athletic venues and does not need the BJCC stadium you are comparing watermelons to acorns.

RE: ABc3340: BJCC stadium bill advances...as Bham business community shows support
B'ham STILL needs the MPF to compete for major conventions and other larger and smaller events like those that kept the GA Dome busy year round. Reality has apparently dictated that the smaller BJCC will be the metro area's choice for the next several decades. I can only hope that the "smaller and cheaper" crowd will get the stadium they believe they will get instead of just a smaller version of Legion Field. We will know about that when the final design is brought out and shovels meet dirt.

As I stated, REALITY indicates the BJCC stadium is the one that will be built and will be what we have for the next several decades. My opinion remains that the city needs the larger MPF to compete for those larger conventions and events to be considered a major southern sunbelt city. How far down tier level we will slide depends upon what other such cities build larger while we are building smaller.

In my lifetime, I have seen this city build smaller and cheaper in a state that has dropped from 9 House seats to 7 and is projected to drop to 6 in 2020. According to this weekend BBJ, Alabama today has over 62,000 FEWER JOBS in 2018 than it had in 2007 before the recession -- placing Alabama number 50 among the states in job recovery. Perhaps B'ham is just fitting in with the culture of the rest of Alabama. Hasn't it worked for the state's power brokers so far?

Maybe that will help. Geez, I was just adding to the conversation, not implying anything about where UAB football should play, so calm down and enjoy a rain free afternoon.

Which major conventions used the Georgia Dome (as opposed to the Georgia World Congress Center or America's Mart)?

I only see things like the Jehovah's Witnesses and Primerica (a Ponzi scheme) that actually needed an auditorium that size for their convention. Everything else went to the more typical convention spaces that are like the BJCC.

And I worked at a Microsoft coders conference at the Georgia Dome once - where they were using the floor for convention space (and not the seats) and it was very awkward. It was like a scene out of HBOs Silicon Valley... lots of money clearly spent, lightly attended, America's Got Talent act on one end, Go karts on another, a MIG jet in the middle for some reason.

While you may have not liked the GA Dome, you were still THERE using the space. Someone was paying "lots of money" for its space and according to your account, three different events were going on while you were there. I have quoted the GA Dome manager who, after the building was damaged by a storm during the SEC BB tournament, stated that they had to get it repaired quickly because "they had over 200 events already scheduled" to come in. He didn't say "200 football games" or that the events may not come in 2 or 3 at a time.

As The Bard had Mark Antony say about Caesar, "The good is often interred with their bones". It appears that is what we are doing with Dr Joseph Volker's admonition about dreams for UAB and the City of B'ham.

I've kinda felt sorry for you and felt you got picked on here sometimes but this is pure horse ****. We're trying to dream bigger by getting a much upgraded venue for our team. One that fits our needs and that we can afford. As much as your love for Bear and Bama comes through in your posts, you gotta lotta nerve quoting Dr. Volker. For a very long time I've thought you were just some oblivious old coot but now I think you get your jollies from constantly referring to Bama on BlazerTalk.

Boo to you, sir, and **** Bama.
