Blazer Almanac- March 7
March 7

The Blazers begin CUSA conference tournament play today as the 6th seed vs. FAU. UAB is 0-2 as the sixth seed. In 1995 In the Great Midwest Conference, UAB was the 6th of 7 seeds. In 96 in CUSA's first year, they were 6th of 11 seeds. They are 0-2, losing in 95 to 3rd seed Marquette 55-46. In 96, they lost to 11th seed USF 73-57 (Gene Bartow's last game).

Two out of the past three years, the sixth seed has advanced to the championship game. Marshall last year and Middle Tennessee in 2015. The last sixth seed to lose in the first round was Central Florida in 2009.

UAB is 7-2 vs. FAU and has won five straight. The two teams have never met in a conference tournament or on a neutral floor.

The Games
UAB is 4-3 in games played on this date. They are 2-2 in conference tournaments on this date.

1992 - UAB closed out the 1991-92 regular season with a home game vs. Saint Louis. The only Senior on the team that year was Elbert Rogers, so he got Senior day all to himself. He celebrated with a 104-76 win over the Billikins and Rogers had 21 points and 13 rebounds.

1997 - UAB was on a run in the 1997 CUSA tournament. They had defeated Houston and Tulane and now faced the third seed Charlotte. Playing their third game in three days, they were down by ten at the half. In the second half, Damon Cobb led the Blazers back with a barrage of three pointers. They got within one possession, but could not pull the upset. UAB lost 67-65.

2001 - In the early 2000's, the CUSA tournament alternated its host sites between Louisville and Cincinnati. In 2001, the host school was Louisville. UAB was the 9 seed and Louisville having a really bad year was the 8 seed. Denny Crum, legendary Louisville coach had announced his retirement. Since the Cards were the higher seed, they were the visiting team on their own home court. Crum accidentally went to the wrong bench before the game started. For the second time in nine days, UAB beat Louisville in Freedom Hall. UAB shot 55% in the game. UAB won 74-61 handing Crum a humiliating loss in his final game. The Blazers were led by LeAndrew Bass with 16 points.

2007 - The 2007 CUSA tournament was held in Memphis, Tennessee. The Blazers were the ninth seed and faced Marshall the 8th seed. Paul Delaney had been named 1st Team all Conference and on the All Defensive Team and Wen Mukubu was third team all Conference.

UAB played poorly in the tournament, a trend that became common in the Mike Davis era. The Blazers were down by 14 to Marshall at halftime. In the second half, Marshall hit only 5 of 20 shots and committed 13 turnovers. UAB attempted a comeback, but fell short when Delaney's bank shot bounced off the rim. UAB lost the game 53-52. Mike Davis's first year ended as a losing season with a record of 15-16.

2009 - Two years later, UAB had a better team and ended the regular season at home against Marshall. Honored on Senior day were five seniors, Mike Davis Jr., Paul Delaney, Lawrence Kinnard, Channing Toney and Robert Vaden. Those seniors contributed 49 of UAB's 70 points as the Blazers beat Marshall 70-52. Delaney led UAB with 17 points.

2012 - The 2012 CUSA Tournament was again in Memphis, but it was for the last time, since Memphis was leaving for the AAC Conference. UAB was the fifth seed its first round game was the 12th seed Tulane. Tulane led by one at halftime, but in the second half, Cameron Moore scored the first four points and UAB never trailed again. The Blazers won the first round game 72-64. Cameron Moore scored 22 points and 14 rebounds and Ovie Soko had a career best 20 points and 12 rebounds.

2015 - UAB closed out the 2014-15 season on the road playing Florida International. UAB had lost the first game on the road trip to FAU. The Blazers lost this last game of the season to FIU 70-66. Nick Norton led UAB with 17 points. The Blazers had closed the regular season 16-15 with a two game losing streak. The bright spot was that they were hosting the CUSA tournament, and everyone hoped the season could be salvaged at home in the tournament.
