"He is still around the game, sometimes a lot. Brown watched practices and gave feedback to friends, many part of the near-infinite reaches of his coaching tree, on the college circuit last season. He has likewise remained connected to the pros and on this night is sitting with Grizzlies coach David Fizdale in the first row of baseline press seats as Memphis plays Sacramento in summer league. But Brown is not in the game."

Quote:Larry Brown cannot get a job. The work doesn’t even have to be as head coach. A mentoring role on a bench, helping to groom fellow assistants and work with players, maybe occasionally swing through the minors to work with younger coaches and younger prospects – that would be ideal.
Brown is a terrfic bench coach. I think hiring him, tapping his experience, and keeping him tethered to campus would both help our team and keep the NCAA at bay.

It’s big, no doubt. But it can’t and won’t be bigger here locally. Hometown hero becomes coach where he once was a superstar.
Right. I couldn'tcare less where the nnational focus is. Locally its Penny. BTW, when was the last time we were nationally relevant? Seems like forever.

Four years go. Not that long ago. Top 25 and NCAA bound for the fourth year in a row. Closed out the year by playing four Top 20 teams in a row. Went 2-2 against those.

Cal was better than Kirk.
I think most would agree Bartow was a better coach than Kirk even if he didn’t have as much success at Memphis as Kirk.
In fact, Finch was an assistant for all of Kirk’s success at Memphis. Who is to say Finch wasn’t better than Kirk?

Dana Kirk was the best basketball coach in the history of this school.

The statistics don’t support that.
You might love him as a coach, but Cal had more success.
I have to say Kirk was the absolute in floor coaching, especially the end of a close game. He was magnificent. As for the best overall coach, well, that is one's opinion, anyway. ALL those mentioned were great coaches. CAL was the best recruiter, but not so great in late game strategy and adjustments. See 2008 champ game. :(

I mean, how did Cal lose that championship game to an 8th seed Villanova!
If he hadn’t blown out Izzo and a UCLA team which had Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, and Darren Collison, and Texas in Texas, we might have not had to endure such humiliation.

I read this article that Brown prefers working around the NBA. Kirk could coach circles around X and was far better at developing player skills. X was better at recruiting. Both were masters at PR. X might get a slight edge on motivation. Dana, imo, was the best all around coach Memphis has ever had.

I think it was Kirk against Villanova in the semifinal, if I'm not correct. And we were playing against a bunch of players that were hyped up on cocaine, I seem to recall.

IMHO, Kirk was a better coach than Cal. Cal had better players. I'd take 3/4 of either right now.
