I think pure coaching is overrated in college basketball. All these guys st this level know a s and Os and situational basketball, etc.

To me, there are 2 keys...

1. Recruit talent
2. Motivate said talent


Josh Pastner lacked #2 and it caused transfers and cost him his job.

I think Penny could do both.

If he is hired this first season will likely not be fun.

If all come back, and he were to pull in a big and a PG (maybe grad transfers), then the season would probably be very fun. Even if he just supplements with a couple of freshmen, if all are back we will likely be challenging for postseason. That would be fun in your first year.

Yes, 5% X's and O's.

It's all about getting the right guys in the program, working on their skill sets so that they develop and get better, motivating them, and making sure they are working well as a team. That's 75% of the battle. I believe that Penny Hardaway can do all of these things.

The remaining 25% is luck and x's and o's.

I guess we'll see what happens.

Hopefully he turns out better than Larry Porter. He could also recruit but had zero head coaching experience and it turned into a disaster.

But Larry "paid his dues" and served all that time as a high level AC. Isn't that what some are calling for Penny to do? It's not fool-proof. None of it.

What's the protocol with a coaching change? Many new screen names start showing up? I know we had some with Tubby. Fewer with Norvell.
