That generates excitement in itself. I can only hope.

Speculation is a major issue in Memphis whether Penny coaches or anybody else. Media and some noisy fans will kill him.

Your last sentence is simply bs.

Is it? Explain Tubby then, media and fans are killing him right now.

Penny is a media darling/rockstar in Memphis. The media and the fans love the guy. And deservedly so. Will they be critical of Penny doesn't win at some point, probably, but the tone would be much different.
The media and some fans have blasted Tubby since he's been here. He's being blasted now because of his lack of recruiting and for many other reasons. Most criticisms of him are deserved.
Massive difference between Penny and Tubby in Memphis.

I don't think we are at that point YET, but it is pretty darn close.

Here's the problem with Penny: again, come someone give me an example of a totally loaded, former player with only 3 years HS BB coaching experience coming in and taking a program to the Sweet 16? I mean it is a grind and a half. Pastner would work, no doubt and he had some results to show for it (Shaq, Will Barton come to mind).

Not a rhetorical question, I just cannot think of anyone off the top of my head. Avery Johnson actually had NBA coaching experience before going to 'Bama.

It's been answered plenty...The best example is John Thompson at G'town.

John Thompson had 6 years of HS coaching.....and that was when he was hired in.....1966.

JT went to GTown in 1972 (over 45 years ago) AND GTown had - in 1972 - ONE NIT and ONE NCAA in the previous...30 years.

So, if you think that is a pretty good 'answer', then it confirms my suspicions: an above average program (like ours) RARELY hires someone with no college BB coaching experience (and no NBA coaching experience either).

I thought you wanted a former player turned coach with little experience having success at the high D1 level. But you moved the goalposts.

Fred Hoiberg then? There's really no answer that will satisfy what you are looking for. But you have to admit that Penny and the current Memphis situation are a bit unique. No real comparison for or against. There is no sure thing when it comes to hiring a coach.

I take it from previous posts you are not a Tubby fan. Doesn't seem you're a Penny fan either. So who would you think is a better hire to replace Tubby at this point in time.

Hewitt got players such as Iman Shumpert and Thad Young to GT

To be clear to those who didn't hear it...they are rumored candidates for AC positions under Penny. Along with Larry Brown.

I don't think Brown is serious. They played back their interview with him from 2 weeks ago when they asked him what he thought about Penny. He obviously loves the guy. I think he even said that. But I think Brown would be more of a consultant than a full-time AC.

Madlock and Hewitt both make a lot of sense. Then get one other go-getter national recruiter.
