I have a group of teams I like a lot before the brackets come out. Of those teams I look and see what their path is. I don't like picking teams that have to go through a lot of good teams. Example: Last year I really liked UNC, Gonzaga and Kentucky going into the tournament. Gonzaga and UNC both had what I thought were relatively clear paths to the Elite 8. Because getting to the elite 8 was easier for them I decided to include both in the finals.
Really the reason I picked UNC instead of UK in the elite eight was I thought Wichita State, then UCLA/UC then UNC was a gauntlet and UK was bound to slip up in one of them. Basically I try to look for the best team that has the most winable games. I'll take that team even over a team I might take against them head to head if the game was guaranteed to happen.
For upsets I look for, undervalued teams combined with teams I think overachieved as far as their seed goes. I like to pick upsets when I'm convinced the team getting upset is unlikely to win their next game even if the upset doesn't occur.
That's really about it.
