OK, so Elmore isn't a 5. Who is then? Because Cacok isn't playing 40 minutes a game, and Kalina better not see the court for important minutes.

This was my thought process as well.

In our conference, 6'8" is a center.

I would assume Shawn O'Connell would be the back up 5 like Bryan was this past year when Cacok was out.

Kalina will likely back up Cacok. I hear over and over that in practice he plays terrific at the 5, but it hasn't shown in games. Maybe another summer with Wolfe will have a big impact.

Also, whether we like it or not, Elmore is slated to be on the court with Cacok, not backing him up. The coaches are high on Elmore being able to kill double teams on Cacok with his outside game at 6'8".

Kalina has some skills for sure. Elmore can really shoot it. Hawks should be much better next year, if PG position pans out and we have some guys step up at the 2 and 3 even more. Several options to work with it appears.

If Kalina does indeed make big strides, that would be huge for us. Not many mid-majors roster an effective 7-footer.

While i love the optimism, what have we seen from Elmore that would allow us to state, "he can really shoot it". High school doesn't count! I hope you are right, but i need to see it first.

Maybe because McGrath has said in a few interviews the Elmore can shoot from anywhere on the court. Coupled with his HS and AAU career.
I do see the reasoning behind your hesitation to "drink the cool aid".

I don't "drink kool aid" before i see it for myself. Shooting in practice and shooting in games is two entirely different things. I hope he is what everyone thinks, but I will reserve that judgement until i see for myself. Let's be real, any decent coach is going to say things to build up his players in interviews. He'd be silly to say anything else.

I don't go with fan speculation. But I do take stock in what McGrath has to say. I don't take him as a BSer. Then again, you still don't know how they will perform in real game situations until they do it.

That's fair, and i didn't mean to label him as a BS'er. Just that most coaches will choose to say positive things about their players(and they should)

I like Elmore. I think with his age, experience (even from the bench), and the confidence the coaches have in him he has the talent and the ability to POTENTIALLY be quite good. However, are extremely limited in-game sample size at the D1 level doesn’t tell us anything yet.

I’m more sold on his potential though, than I am from what I saw of Kalina all year. Im sure Kalina is a great guy. I hope he makes some big time strides this year, but a quality backup at the 5, he is not. Hence why we struggled so badly without Cacok on the floor.

Anyone seen (or heard about) Kalina's development lately? Bigs can sometime blossom pretty late. As people have been discussing lineups lately , he has been noticeably absent from the discussions.

Quality minutes from him would be a pleaseant senior season development.

I haven't heard anything, but I'm hoping that a full offseason with Coach Wolf will pay off. I'm just glad he won't be the only big coming off the bench anymore. It was not fun watching games last season knowing that we were always a couple of CAA whistle blows away from being screwed.

RE: 2018-2019 MBB Starting Line-Up Way Too Early Thread
I know a shooter when I see one or at least the potential. CC had it and once he was confident, it was a wrap. He actually didn't have a ton of arc either, but had a ton of rotation and confidence which is vital. Elmore has a very good release and presentation. Elmore has it in him regarding shooting, so if he's confident or once he gets confident, can and will be north of 35% with no problem at all on a pick and pop or step out, once he's confident (that's the biggest thing for a big man good shooter). The likely reason is that in the back of their mind it's like some fans will be like...why is he out there shooting plus they tend to not get as many in game chances UNLESS they're absolutely convinced that is good to do so and everybody is on board. Same happened to CC until that GMU championship game in 2001 that it was like...well,nobody else can score and I can. After that, he was freaking money. The game has changed now though so that reasoning is going away for people that keep up with scoring metrics.

Now I'm not sure of his defense or boarding and finishing at the rim, but he has good coaches for that. That will dictate his minutes, not his shooting.

I don't remember who Brett Blizzard compared Elmore to in the Beat interview, but Brett thinks Elmore has more skills. I would think Brett would know. Of course it all means nothing if the confidence isn't there.

From early this year:
Trey Kalina brings Texas-like-size to UNCW

UNCW has had back-to-back conference championship seasons, it had a need for a big-man with the departure of Chuck Ogbodo and of course a staff featuring Joe Wolf who is in charge of working with the big men.

“He’s not like any other coach I’ve ever had before, so it’s really different. He really knows how to teach the game, position and tricks of the trade. I believe what he’s teaching us 100%.”

and

While UNCW is a fast paced team, traditionally a challenge for big men, Trey puts the work in at practice to get himself ready for game day. In order to be ready, he does one thing.

“I just try to keep up with Devontae. If I do that, I’m doing good. That’s what I aim for.”

Having a player like Devontae Cacok is as much a curse for other teams as it is a blessing for UNCW. Not only does he provide a force in games, he pushes his teammates to make them better, just like he does with Trey.

“Practicing against him everyday, I’ve played against a lot of guys like him, but none with the athletic ability. He’s really athletic so I have to box him out every play. That just creates good habits for me.”

I think we should also keep in mind that he had a pretty significant injury last season. Don't think that will effect his shooting ability, but it could definitely impact other parts of his game that will determine how much playing time he will get. I'm optimistic about Elmore, but I'm also aware that he hasn't played consistent minutes of competitive basketball since high school.
