Regarding Matt...Getting tougher down low will be his doing or undoing and his overall defense plus boarding. He can shoot.

He actually didn't have a ton of arc either, but had a ton of rotation and confidence which is vital. Elmore has a very good release and presentation. Elmore has it in him regarding shooting, so if he's confident or once he gets confident, can and will be north of 35% with no problem at all on a pick and pop or step out, once he's confident (that's the biggest thing for a big man good shooter). The likely reason is that in the back of their mind it's like some fans will be like...why is he out there shooting plus they tend to not get as many in game chances UNLESS they're absolutely convinced that is good to do so and everybody is on board. Same happened to CC until that GMU championship game in 2001 that it was like...well,nobody else can score and I can. After that, he was freaking money. The game has changed now though so that reasoning is going away for people that keep up with scoring metrics.

Now I'm not sure of his defense or boarding and finishing at the rim, but he has good coaches for that. That will dictate his minutes, not his shooting.
I don't remember who Brett Blizzard compared Elmore to in the Beat interview, but Brett thinks Elmore has more skills. I would think Brett would know. Of course it all means nothing if the confidence isn't there.
I think we should also keep in mind that he had a pretty significant injury last season. Don't think that will effect his shooting ability, but it could definitely impact other parts of his game that will determine how much playing time he will get. I'm optimistic about Elmore, but I'm also aware that he hasn't played consistent minutes of competitive basketball since high school.
Talked about similarities to Callahan I believe.

Just saw on Twitter that Jacque Brown had surgery today. No other details.

He stated he'd be back to full strength in a month. So as of now it looks like he should be good to go by first day of practice.

It would be cool to see the Hawks back in contention for the NCAA's again soon. There's no reason to think that they can't compete with pretty much any team in the CAA this year. Hawks should be better if PG play is there because there are more answers than questions for the other positions and there's more depth. You never know until the season starts, but this feels different than last year this time. Hawks have tradition now so that has helped UNCW's recruiting quite a bit regardless of the transition year. A bounce back year would be great to keep building.

It would be great for the staff to land a few good bigs coming up. It looks like UNCW has the rest for the future at the guard and wings. Will a few of them REALLY step up? That's the question. It takes one or two studs at guard/wing plus a good big or 2 to get there. We know that much as we've seen it.

I don't think Shawn O'Connell came to UNCW for his grad season to be a backup, or without some strong assurances that he would be a likely starter. Check out some video on him and you'll see that he is really very, very good.

(Plus, as we have seen, he never misses free throws!04-bow)

I don't know how Coach McGrath fits all the pieces together, but he's in my starting lineup.

Whoa there buddy. Averaged about 12 mins per game for his career with
3.3 ppg and 3 rebounds in the Sunbelt not the ACC. I'll wait and see if he is very, very good.

O'Connell will play a lot next year, but I would be shocked if he starts.

Wow. He’s athleticism and shot do not match his past stats. Didn’t expect those highlights at all. Hopefully he’s working on his core and leg strength as I’d imagine that’s a big reason he saw limited minutes. I think we all have a pretty good idea who the favorite is to start at the four. This kid adds tremendous depth if he doesn’t start.

I agree completely. He obviously is a solid player with surprising good athleticism and comes from a very good hoops family. I think that he had some stat that had him being one of the best transfers in the nation with respect to offensive efficiency. If nothing else, he's been around and knows hoops well so he will know what to do. It seemed that they didn't use him very much where he was. He can pick and choose his spots and with Cacok having so much attention, can really have a field day playing off of him.

O'Connell only averaged 12.4 min per game. For comparison sake Marcus Bryan averaged 27.4 min per game. If you look at Per 40 minutes a game O'Connell and Bryans stats look quite similar.

O'Connell- 10.8 pts, 9.8 rebs, 0.5 ast, 1.5 stls

Bryan- 8.3 pts, 10.0 rebs, 1.6 ast, 0.6 stls

If O'Connell can at least fill Bryan's shoes and hopefully a little bit more then that will be key. Bryan added a lot to last years team IMO.
