McGrath is here and nobody knows how Siddle would have done or who would have stayed. I supported keeping Siddle, but it didn't happen. Water under the bridge.

McGrath has a good 3 years to show he was the right guy. I would have liked to have seen him press and play some zone to mitigate our weakness in m-m, but Keatts never did that either. We all may be amazed as we are coming off an NCAA appearance and first round victory, which is the reason we did a 180 in style...to get that NCAA win. He isn't going anywhere until at least 3 years is up, regardless of where we are record wise. One thing for sure, this will be his program with his recruits next year.

A first round victory ?
McGrath will have some of his recruits next next and some are left from Keatts next season, let's be honest about this . The guy deserves the truth even from a message board poster. It is his program right now but not all are his recruits now or next season.
I think the point was he got thrown into a tough situation late in the game last year, No, he's got a full year behind him, and a full year of recruiting.

Then say that and don't beat around the bush with half truths. This coming season could see mostly Keatts recruits starting and playing the bulk of the minutes. It takes some time unless you get really lucky and inherit a good team-McGrath was not all that lucky in that regard.

RE: 2018-2019 MBB Starting Line-Up Way Too Early Thread
I was on the Siddle train before we hired CB. I don't think you can blast someone for looking back on the season and reflecting on whether Siddle being hired would have eased the transition to a new coach. I think we would have maintained a consistent style of play and kept some key recruits (ideally the JUCO Big boy) and won more games. It's ok to reflect on that with year one behind us. That does not mean Siddle would be the better hire 3-4 years from now.

CB was dealt a tough hand. Besides obvious personnel/talent shortages, the the team was not prepared to play effective half court defense partially because Keatt's style did not emphasize that. This absolutely cost us the game against UVA. If you look at NC States stats this year, they are one of the worst in the nation at defending two point shots (i.e. they give up numerous drives to the basket). Keatt's style is successful because he offsets poor half court defense by generating turnovers and knocking down three pointers.

Next season CAN be better IF Toews is ready or if we bring in a JUCO or grad transfer who is ready. Otherwise, Cacock's final year will be another "what could have been" type year. At least it won't be as bad as Rendleman. Poor guy never caught a break and was one of the top talents we've had.

So I was browsing verbalcommits.com and clicked on Devontae Cacok's name and on the left side of the page are mentions on twitter. This caught my eye from a NC State fan.

https://twitter.com/i/web/status/974692445828059136

Look who "liked" those two posts. Cacok himself. Very interesting and concerning.

Let's not jump to conclusions or anything... It's just a like on twitter. Makes me feel very uneasy though. However, I would like to say that him liking the tweet about inquiring on transferring last year, almost confirms it... Makes me wonder what happened that kept him from doing it. State had the scholarships, because they added Beverly in July. So either he was told not to make the move or he didn't have the 2.5 GPA that is a must to get a release from UNCW. If he was told not to make the move, why would he do it now. Much of his offensive improvement is a credit to Joe Wolf. Keatts runs his offense through guards and it wouldn't necessarily help his draft stock. I'm going to stay optimistic about this...

Not jumping to conclusions by posting this. Just found it very interesting and something to maybe keep any eye on.

Yeah, I got you. Wasn't directed it at you, just saying in general. This could cause quite the stir on the board as you can imagine.

Haha yeah I understand. My heart sunk when I saw that. Will be an interesting next month.

That would be about as low a blow as Keatts could hit UNCW with-not buying that any coach would do that.

Unless Tae is much closer to graduation than we know as a rising senior, this move doesn't really make sense for him to transfer somewhere to sit a year to play only one year. If he can make an immediate move as a grad transfer, maybe, but the player he was under Keatts and the player he is under this current staff are completely different, especially offensively. If he wants to continue to grow and be a likely candidate for CAA POY next year, he stays. IMO, next year's team will be much, much better if we can add another front court player.

RE: 2018-2019 MBB Starting Line-Up Way Too Early Thread
If Cacock was leaving, I think he would have left last year. He's a 6'7" center with a limited offensive game and that won't cut it at the next level(except overseas). He has 2 NCAA appearances under his belt, he set an all -time NCAA record for FG%, he led the nation in rebounding. He doesn't have anything left to prove, so now he needs to focus on improving his offensive game.

My only concern is that he may have a desire to have an extra year at the collegiate level to improve, and transferring would give him that time. He would then need to focus on a team that could coach him up and let him play forward. The big problem for Cacock at UNCW is that he is our only player capable of playing center. Kalina won't be the guy, and I can't see McGrath pairing them on the court together.

So, i'm 50/50 on whether he stays or goes.

I understand in this conference he plays in the middle but moving forward he has to hit mid range jump shots and defend on the perimeter . I don't see him having a problem defensively and you are what you guard .

I don't think the extra year on the collegiate level is an option for him. He can be a professional in a year. He would be able to dedicate all of his free time to his craft and not worry about school, while getting a paycheck. I think it's either a grad transfer situation or he's back in Teal next year.

I'm PERFECTLY fine seeing "Cacock" leave!!! I'd be upset though if Cacok left!! Devontae had a good year and is poised to have another one the way he rebounds and hustles.

Don't know if he will, won't or whatever. Reminds me of the rumors swirling around after Brian Rowsom's junior year. A lot of folks had him going to the tar holes for his senior year.

So he can graduate this year, leave and play next year? Is he in a position to do that ? We all know if that happens it better not be 2 hours up I-40 or it will get ugly. Lots of ifs- I am thinking.

Wow! Cacok likes a tweet and suddenly the sky is falling. So much speculation. McGrath has already done more to help Dontae work on expanding his game than Keatts did. Why would he want to walk away from that? But really guys. Why don't we wait for something substantial before we freak out. So much worry with zero evidence. I choose to look forward to, and be thankful for, having Cacok one more year.

It's not just this tweet. I have had the concern since Keatts left and due to a losing season. This just revived the conversation

I wouldn't think any current big would want to leave the tutelage of Wolf. Not to mention the NBA contacts this staff must have.
