I'm saying that it should matter that an excellent regular season gets many teams nothing more than seeding for a conference tournament, and it's a mistake that the NCAA allows conferences to make their basketball regular season almost irrelevant.

Anyone who has ever complained about the college hoops regular season having little importance should not be supporting the idea of NCAA autobids going to conference tournament winners rather than regular season champs.
I'd rather have the regular season meaningless than the postseason being a joke. In college football, the regular season is meaningful, but the post season is a joke. In college basketball regular season is meaningless, but the postseason is incredible. Give me college basketball 100% of the time.

Your justification for the college basketball postseason is, "Who cares if it's fair, what matters is that the games are entertaining." The exact same justification could be applied to the College Football Playoff, whose games have been very entertaining.

It's that everyone has a chance. Definitely not that way in college football, where for 65 teams you are done before the season.

If you give autobids to regular season champs, then everyone already has a chance -- win your conference's regular season and you're in.

What exists now is that teams who are terrible in the regular season get an undeserved second chance. Doesn't matter for any conference whose regular season champ is going to get an at-large bid anyway, but for the winners of the other 23 conferences it matters a lot. Example: Northern Kentucky's 15-3 conference regular season got them nothing. They're out and a team that was 6-12 in the regular season is still in it. Essentially, they played 30 exhibition games and then lost the only game that counted. Might as well skip the regular season and draw conference tournament seedings at random.

Hey man, it's all part of the Madness! At that level the conference slate is preparation for the conference tournament. It's not like the Norsemen were oblivious heading into it.

RE: 2018 NIT/CBI/CIT bids and declines
For you guys complaining: when Division I basketball was structured there weren't 300 something teams vying for a bid and tournaments became important to allow another conference member a chance at the Dance. Any conference can follow the Ivy League if they so choose, but they don't. I wish we could get back to 64 teams though; consolidate some of these small-time leagues and maybe eliminate two at-larges from the P6.

That's what already happens. It's the opening round. If I had my way, they'd all be 16 seeds instead of two games of each.

NCAA tournament autobids should go to regular season conference champs, and NIT autobids should go to conference tournament winners who don't get invited to the NCAA tournament.

It's not up to the NCAA it's up to each conference how they issue their auto-bid. Ivy used to do reg season champ.

That's only because they didn't have a tournament. Just like the B1G.

I'd rather no play in games with 16 seeds, and all with the border line at large teams. At least the 16 seeds have earned it.

One way or the other is what's best. Two of each makes little sense to me.

Hey man, I just want the tourney to start on Thursday again. This 65/68 nonsense is messing up the bracket pools.

I like it because leaves a smaller gap between the conference tournaments and the real tournaments. I even hope they go to 80.

How many teams are we talking about? What's the average number of regular season champions that don't play in the NCAA tournament?

I'd actually like to see the NIT field merge with a NCAA tournament losers bracket.

I wish the NIT used the women's NIT format. Auto bids to the top team from each conference that isn't selected to the NCAA Tournament.

Not that I’m against it, but you would need to increase the NIT to either 48 or 64 teams (easier to bracket.). I like the way they have it now, as it makes room for deserving teams, while not making the tourney too big.

I think to do that they'd have to expand to 64 like the WNIT, or at least 48. Because at 32 they wouldn't even have enough spots for every conference to send a team even after you eliminated the at-large bids.

Which maybe isn't the worst idea anyway: Kill the CBI and CIT (or let one of them limp along as a 16-team showcase for low majors) and do a 64-team NIT.

Cleveland State is one step from the Dance. What a sham. Don't even play the regular season.

Why can’t Dennis Felton do it again? He did it 10 years ago as a 12-seed!

So a G5 (football term) fan doesn’t want inclusion for all? What a hypocrite! If Cleveland St does win, they would have earned a berth to the playoffs!!

This would be like a 5-7 team in the weaker half of a conference winning the conference championship game and then somehow winding up in the College Football Playoffs. Not quite the same thing.

Exactly the same thing. Just different rules between basketball and football.

However, it’s the same argument for those that wanted UCF in the football playoff, which was not many before the Peach Bowl. You are saying you want the best, or most deserving teams in the playoffs/March Madness, but when it happened in college football, fans like you were in an uproar.

You don't get it, mixing apples and oranges.

This is why, as noted earlier in the thread, not all teams should be allowed in conference tournaments. I'm not against the little guy because Northern Kentucky should be getting getting the auto-bid, not Cleveland State who totally sucked this year.

A better comparison would be if Cincinnati won both AAC titles but was automatically forced into the NIT or forced into a tournament with the Final Four losers or something. There is no direct comparison in reality.
