Is it realistic to expect a coach to jump from High School to a program on Memphis' level?

It seems like he'd bring the talent with him for sure, so you'd have him that going for your but what about running a program, recruiting, dealing with the media etc etc etc? Seems like a BIG jump to me.

I'm not sure what to think about Tubby. I would lean toward giving him a little more time but I also heard that regarding our Tubby (Tubberville) when it was clear the game had passed the man up and he didn't look like he was really interested/hungry for winning.

Tubby was a great coach, or at least a really good one...at one time. Not sure he's the answer now, but do you give him more time or not?

You guys are in a tough spot. I wish you the best.

I said from day one he should get three years, then see where we are. Prior to the USF travesty, things were starting to trend upward, unlike last year's collapse. Fans started being a bit more positive, etc. With Myreon Jones committing and (hopefully) everyone back, this team could win, what, 23-24?

I'm on the fence about Penny. I'd like to see it just so we'll know once and for all how he'd do. If he wins, everyone's happy. If he doesn't succeed, the fans continually calling for his hire will finally clam up.

Why couldn't Tubby hire him as his #1 assistant and 'groom him' to take the reigns in a couple years.

This would make everyone happy no?

Plus, you probably would still get the talent as the kids would want to come there that are currently under him at the high school he coaches.

I know Penny could say, "no, I only go as the head coach" but surely somebody can sit with the man and talk some sense...show him the value of going in under a guy like Tubby Smith for a couple years, learn the ins/outs, Tubby would be great for that.

Memphis may have to pay Penny a TON for a first assistant but it probably would be worth it and also energize the fanbase as now everybody is happy:

Tubby supporters are happy, the man keeps his job
Penny supporters are happy, he's on board and clearly set up to take over soon.

Saul Smith already occupies that position lolololololol

Instead of K. Lawson and a parade of top 50 talent we got Saul Smith and misses on D2 players.

I'm assuming the AD can say, "Tubby, your son isn't happening here. Ever. So put that to bed now. Penny Hardaway is. He can either happen with you grooming him over the next few years with you walking away with a legacy and with you being in a great light in this community or it can happen now with you being terminated and ending your great career with a black eye. Which option do you want?"

I believe Tubby's contract gives him complete control over his staff.

Unless our program blinks first, it's doubtful Penny will be hired by anyone as a head coach for his first college gig...seems to me it would've already happened if the market were favorable.

BTW, should we take a flyer and hire him for the top job, I sincerely hopes he absolutely kills it out of the gate. Nothing would make me happier than to see our hometown guy make it happen...just don't think the timing is right for him to attempt a major turnaround until he gets more reps under his belt.

Tubby DOESN’T want to coach THOSE types of players, hence he doesn’t recruit them
M that’s the reason the Lawsons are gone.... Prolly the reason why we are forced to have the “lame duck” chopped liver staff Saul/Pooh that we have. Because they are ONLY going to recruit within the parameters that Tubby is comfortable in.... It’s NOT MEMPHIS GOOD....

For the foreseeable future, this program will be lame...., Tubby ONLY achieved SUCCESS at a major level, anything close to where Memphis is accustomed to, when he relieved Pitino.... That’s MAJOR when you look at the areas that he’s coached...

Our expectations are far gr8er than Georgia; Texas Tech or Minnesota....Neither of those Universities have the facilities or have achieved ANY prior successes on the level of Memphis DRAIN THE FREAK’N TUBB.....It CAN’T be done soon enough....

He needs to be embarrassed, as he is clearly taking this University and this fan base for a ride..... boarder line CRIMINALWhen considering the compensation coupled with the HIGHJACKING of the basic and fundamental principles that made this program what it was and what it IS today...... What are those fundamental principles that made this program what it was and what it is today? Also, could you enlighten us as to what specific ordinances are involved in the alleged borderline criminal activity? I’ll hang up and listen to your answer.

lol. I wouldn't take it literally. It just seems criminal.

Anyone who watched Cincy beat WSU by one point in Shockerville a few minutes ago...now remembers just how effing far we've fallen.

And we can't get up either--not with Tubby here.

Don't understand the necessity if you're a TRUE FAN.....

1) Fundamental Principles of developing homegrown talent right out of our Talent laden area. I hope you DON'T need names...Recruiting Nationally having TOP recruiting classes in the country...I hope you DON'T need years

2) Did NOT state Criminal Activity....which is an act...I simply inferred that it's borderline criminal; The way that this program has been stripped of it's resources (local talent); ostracized fan base; reluctance to recruit high-level national talent and brain washing to suggest that this IS a successful foundation moving forward...The intent is criminal, as this staff is being compensated Top 10 compensation and yielded two of our worst defeats in program history and fanbase participation is at an ALL TIME LOW and we have the lowest rated recruiting class coming in as this administrations compensation INCREASES......Surely your JOKING, RIGHT? 03-shhhh

We’re not a top 20 team, that’s for sure. I don’t know if we have a chance to be next year or not, depends a lot on adding talent. I’m curious to see if we free up a couple more schollies to fill some needs, there should be some solid players available by transfer/decommit with all the FBI stuff going on.

I still believe that Tubby’s way ultimately will not satisfy the Memphis fan base, but I don’t believe this is time to cut bait either. I definitely think we’ll be a much better team next year. If we aren’t competing for the AAC championship next year, however, I’ll be ready to move on myself.

It's gotta be done NOW! Tubby has duped us....There is NO possible scenario that will change our circumstances (during the term of this staffs contract) due to Tubby's recruiting methods and stubbornness towards staff changes, As well as lack of energy....HE DOESN'T GIVE A DAYUM

It's gotta be done NOW! Tubby has duped us....There is NO possible scenario that will change our circumstances (during the term of this staffs contract) due to Tubby's recruiting methods and stubbornness towards staff changes, As well as lack of energy....HE DOESN'T GIVE A DAYUM

i heard the snocone machine has already disappeared from the new basketball facility, IT'S A DAYGUM CRIME I'M TELLIN YA

Anyone who watched Cincy beat WSU by one point in Shockerville a few minutes ago...now remembers just how effing far we've fallen.

And we can't get up either--not with Tubby here.

We’re not a top 20 team, that’s for sure. I don’t know if we have a chance to be next year or not, depends a lot on adding talent.

I believe Tubby's contract gives him complete control over his staff.

sure...it will be his decision; he either decides to take the AD's suggestion and bring Hardaway into groom him or the AD exercises his decision to terminate the man.

PFFFT. **** man we gonna win 20 games this year! pfffft.

Probably the best we looked all year, but ECU didn't play much defense beyond reaching.

Why not ... 05-stirthepot Isn't this his first year as a HC. He too good to be an assistant. Let's say Bowen sits down with him ... says Tubby is all for you being Coach in waiting (think SMU) for ... No more than ... 3 years TopS ... maybe 2. Just wondering why he wouldn't agree to that. 04-cheers
