SLAW - support one of our own
For those that know JMU Dukes Law (Slaw), he just shared this morning that one of his twin boys has a rare genetic disorder. Another friend and I thought it would be good to share it on here so that anyone that might not be on FB could still show some support. He doesn't post as much anymore, but he used to be a pretty major poster on here.

Quote:Friends and Family,

It's not easy to publicly share these types of things, but we’ve put it off for too long, and we’re so proud of our beautiful son that we just want everyone to know how inspiring and strong he is. Most people know we had twin boys in 2016 - Landon James and Weston Miley. From the beginning, we knew Landon wasn’t hitting the same milestones that his brother was. Through countless doctor visits, geneticists, and other specialists, we finally received the official diagnosis of Neurofibromatosis. Of course, we’d never heard of this condition, as it is quite rare. So we spent the last year going to countless doctors and specialists to get our game plan to be ready to take it head on. If I were NF, I’d be scared of the Theobalds.

What is NF? NF is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow throughout the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and skin. It can lead to blindness, bone abnormalities, cancer, deafness, disfigurement, and learning disabilities. There is currently no cure, but there is hope. The Children's Tumor Foundation is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to funding NF research to find effective treatments, expanding knowledge of the disorder, and advancing care for the NF community.

Despite these challenges, Landon is the happiest baby in the world. He loves retaliating against his brother, now that he can walk just like him. He likes pretend cooking, our two cats, and playing outside. While this is a very serious condition, we try not to focus on the uncertain future, because right now, today, he’s great. And he’ll always be great, because he has the best support system and extended family ready to have his back at any moment. We’re so blessed to have the love and resources to tackle this head on. NF has nothing on us, and nothing on LJ Smooth.

I sincerely ask everyone to consider donating to our Richmond NF Walk page (and no that doesn’t mean you have to actually walk). The walk isn't for about 10 weeks so we wanted to get out ahead of it. Last year, they fell short of their overall goal. And the competitive person in me wants to have the single highest donating team this year, since it’s our first year. These walks provide over 60% of the entire research budget for NF. That is HUGE. This isn’t just like donating drops in a massive bucket like you’re used to with big national charities. This is giving substantial help in a small bucket where every dollar matters.

If you have the ability to just toss $5, $10, or any amount on our page, it would mean the world to us, and to Landon (aka L J Smooth).

Thank you!

Here's the page for the walk:

Thanks for sharing. I never met Mrs Slaw, and I'm not a big facebooker, but seeing them grow together you can tell they are a very energetic optimistic couple (i mean, duh, have you met the guy?). Their strength to deal with this will be inspiring - book it.

Agreed, having know Slaw for a while and worked with him as well for a bit, he's a great dude and deserves all the support they can get! I saw his post first thing this morning and shipped that donation ASAP. May it help find a cure!

YOU GUYS. I'm pretty sappy to begin with but this brought a tear. Thank you SO much for the kind words, it means the world to us. It felt so good to finally rip that band aid off and publicly share Landon's story. And the support you and others have shared in less than a day has blown us away. Like I can never express in words what it means.

Over $9,000 in 72 hours! The entire walk's goal for VA is $30,000 ... and we're a third of that total. We're also 9k of the total 11k raised. Such beautiful outpouring from people I barely know and people who stood by me in purple and yellow tube socks. THanks again! And if you still have the urge to donate, make sure to type my name in that blank "credit this to fundraiser." Because why not win all the competitions when its for charity?
