Really think we will be decent next year. Team is growing up.

Refs were truly awful during both games. They're not old enough to have been in the SWC, but their daddies must have been.

If we keep everyone, we can be decent.

So do we still have chance at conference tournament. I know we have to beat UTSA and UTEP will have to lose at North Texas (the latter part will likely happen). Will that be enough?

UTSA lost their top scorer for the season last week. They're still good, but we have a chance.

Only saw UTEP, but agree. I thought there were more bad calls against UTEP than Rice, but I doubt it made a difference in the game.

Hmmm. Gotta check the box score to see if Shorty Lawson Jr. worked our game tonight.

RE: MBB: UTEP @Rice
Wow I didn't realize that we had lost to UTEP 9 straight times before last night. And while UTEP wasn't good, they returned 4 starters from last year (although one of them is now strictly a bench guy who doesn't play much). It just shows you how much confidence and one or two above average guys (the one guy UTEP lost was pretty good) can make or break a team.

Cashaw is definitely hobbling around a bit but he's toughening it out and still is contributing a lot to the squad. For a 7-win team, our confidence level isn't bad at all - it's nice to see how much confidence and improvement guys like Hunter and Mency are playing with right now. That's pretty much all attributed to the coaching.

Hunter looked really good as a Freshman. I hope he sticks around. Anything wrong with Meyer?

That and several other drives to the basket made several of us think he could be better than Evans in those types of situations. I believe he is quicker and his height gives him a chance to avoids blocks. His progress this year, and in particular the last 5 games has been exciting. Needs improvement in shooting FTs as he will get fouled a lot driving in. He also had several nice passes that led to baskets. He and Osborne are developing some good chemistry between them. I liked that we forced the pace of play last night and didn’t get trapped in a half court game.

As far as Meyer, he just doesn’t play with intensity he needs on the inside. Last night Jones again played well and helped to add intensity. I still think Jones should have gotten more minutes this year.

Yes. In that scenario a win against UTSA, if we can pull it off, gives us the tiebreaker edge since UTSA will outrank LATech (UTEP’s best win)

RE: MBB: UTEP @Rice
I know I keep harping on leadership for this team to progress but Ako Adams stepped up last night again and his free throws successfully closed out the game. He has been trying to take this role now for several games and has occasionally succeeded and occasionally stumbled but I like his commitment to be a floor leader. He is not Rice's best player but he is trying to establish himself as a "go to" player down the stretch.

The group's observations on Najja and Malik are similar to mine. Najja began to assert himself with about 8 minutes left in the first half and helped keep the lead as time was winding down in the 2nd half until Ako was able to get to the FT line to seal the deal.

It would be nice to see a sizable crowd on Saturday to give some energy for a "must win" last game of the regular season against UTSA. I also want the crowd to thank Bishop Mency for working so hard and not giving up on the Owls, even when he was not getting PT last year. His game reminds me a great deal of T.J. Armstrong, one of the most under-rated defenders who played for Coach Wilson between 1995 and 1999 (The Mike Wilkes, Robert Johnson and Alex Bougaieff teams).

I'll be there tomorrow for the triple header-- 1:00p baseball vs. HBU at The Reck, 4:30p WBB vs. N.Tx, 7:00p MBB vs. UTSA.
