RE: Kent State @ Akron
Please, can we stop blaming the rules or the officials. With the exception of a handful of bad calls, it was a well officiated game. You have to consider the players and the game situation to be fair. The atmosphere was intense from the tip off on. Tell the truth, this was two very bad teams playing poorly. The fouls were there due to lazy defense positioning. Kent State BB has left the house. Our offense is easy to defend due individuality. DLR can not be the emphasis of a winning team. You can figure out why, I just do not want to say it. Walker is an athlete. He is high risk and should not play the minutes he plays. He never saw a shot he did not like. His major scoring is from the arc. I can not remember the last time he scored inside the arc. Even a bad team with a good coach like acorn, knows this. Come on fans, stop blaming forces beyond our team. We are what our record says we are. If you are like me, you are just depressed because of where we have sunk. It hurts to see pretty good talent being so dysfunctional. Have my tickets for Monday already. Another sad point, if we had won, we would be going straight to the Q.

RE: Kent State @ Akron
I think it's tough to have any real takeaways from this game. I agree with the posts that said our offense looked very sloppy. But at the same time the extreme foul trouble on both sides meant we we're seeing lineups we don't typically see. For example, Kent went with a four guard lineup with Duling as the only big when AD and Pippen fouled out. That lineup has seen very little run in MAC play. We weren't able to play the lineups we normally play, particularly late, and they weren't either. As for the officials being good, I can't agree with that. There were several calls both ways where there was phantom contract or the offensive players creating the contact but was rewarded free throws. Pippen's 5th foul was a complete joke and a huge play in the game. And I don't know why everyone doesn't just stick a 6'3" guy on AD. They'll call an offensive foul everytime he posts up. He would've been a heck of a player a few years ago when you were allowed to bang inside.

I don’t think anybody was blaming the rules for the loss. Just lamenting the current length of a college basketball game. Something has to change there. In my case it’s not all the fouls but all the timeouts. Eight TV timeouts, eight coaching timeouts and all the video reviews. It’s all games not just MAC games.

Actually, I think football, basketball and baseball games at all levels take too long, and take much longer than they used to.

Basketball was going along fine UNTIL TV started paying out BIG $$$$ and therefore, advertisers need time so longer timeouts, games were scheduled around TV coverage and control of games was lost. MHO. Money has ruined college basketball. It makes you wonder if investing in MACC is viable if they restructure the NCAA like the NBA STARS think it should be. Who will come to watch????? MHO 2

ADR brought a lot of the ref's calls on himself. I am sure that he has the reputation with them that he is thuggish and complains too much. Early on he was a flop artist and the refs do not like that. It makes them look bad no matter if they call it or not. They are not going to give him the benefit of the doubt any longer. Also, do not be too hard on Peterson. He does many things well and is one of the few players on the team that makes few mistakes. Notice that we have two basic plays. Play one is to get the ball to ADR hopefully on the low post. Most often now, he gets it too far away. Play 2 is Walker goes one on one and everyone else watches. That is about it folks. Are you seeing more?

Both plays remind me of the CAVS, with one of their players.

GFLASH68, I agree about Peterson. I have been too hard on him, but my only complaint is that he doesn't shoot well enough or score enough. As for the complaints of ADL's antics and the other overall failings of the team and individuals, isn't that the coaches job to have fixed? Or, have the coaches done all they can and they players aren't just good enough and/or coachable enough? If the latter is the case, isn't it up to the coaches to do a better job of getting players? As we coaches used to say decades ago, "You can train a mule all day and all night but he'll never win the Kentucky Derby. You gotta have the horses."

roundball4me, yeah it's the money. It was inevitable that sports would be tarnished by money. Money is like a virus. When it finds a cell in which it can begin multiplying, in this case sports, it will. I don't have the time, or the finger strength due to arthritis, to type about ALL the changes I've seen because of money since I started following sports about 1953. Not all changes since then have been for the worse, but probably 90% of the changes due to the money have been.

There's a lot of Zabo drives as well. And occasionally Avery. But yes for the most part we're a perimeter player trying to penetrate or throw it to AD and let him work. I gotta disagree on Peterson. I think his lack of development is the biggest issue with the team this year. From day one we had one roster flaw. Lack of length on the wing. Edwin did a lot of important things for us last year and we tried to replace him by hoping Peterson and Ridenour could fill the void... And they couldn't. I also think Peterson's inability to hit an open shot has really hurt Walker because defenses can completely leave him. Kent fans love to jump on Walker for trying to do too much, but opposing defenses key on him and more often than not his forced shots come after a bad team possession where we didn't get anything going. If we had a wing next to him that could score I think he'd have a lot more room to operate. Peterson is shooting 25.4% from 3, 35% overall, and 54.5% from the line and on top of that nearly every shot he takes is a good look. If we can't significantly upgrade the SF position next year I fear we're in for more of the same.

One other comment. I think it's time to start featuring Pippen in the offense more. Often what he gets is threes when a slower defender is giving him too much space and put backs. He's is starting to look like he might have the highest ceiling on the roster and with his length he can get that nice looking jump shot off over just about anyone in the MAC. Since we struggle to get good looks so frequently why not just feed him jump shots until the lane starts to open up?

Listen, the Zips go guard-heavy as it is. And last night their one decent-sized guy was saddled with fouls all night. So the fact that half our shots last night were threes when we are the 10th-ranked 3FG% team in the league against an all-guard lineup is, to me, an unforgivable administrative flaw.

Games should be around the 105 minute mark not 190 minutes. I stopped paying full attention halfway through the 2nd half when every few seconds someone as at the line shooting free throws for a touch foul. It is every single game that it happens which is making me lose interest in watching every game.

I agree. We might as well be watching a cricket match. Stop shooting the the first 6 fouls (unless in the act of shooting) like the NBA. Cut times outs to three and if you don’t use it in the first half don’t take it away (I am sick of stupid timeouts in the first half). TV has added a lot of time to all games but overcoaching in basketball, football and baseball is becoming absurd. It’s added just as much time as TV. You can fix that half of the problem for free.
I go to a few Division III games every year - without TV those games seldom go beyond and hour and 15 minutes.

I think an hour and fifteen minutes is a bit fast for a game and would prefer around a hour forty five. That way players get a bit of a rest and I feel like I got my moneys worth.

Two worst arenas in thee MAC by far. But isn't a Kent fan calling another arena a dive make you into a blind squirrel? That new JAR video board system is far better than any other arena in the MAC. I guess you just like the old 1950's style scoreboard in the MACC.

Both schools are stuck with doing "lipstick on a pig" improvements. Akron has just gotten a head start on buying more lipstick than Kent. You can build an improved practice area that a fan never sees or spend the money on getting more fan satisfaction from the game experience. When will Kent finally eliminate the floor bleachers on three sides of the court?

I'm sorry, that board was good? And that's the redeeming highlight of the whole arena??? No stats on the board, the operator cut out in the middle of plays, switches from live feed to replays at random. You can polish a horse turd all you want, but in the end, it's still a horse turd.
In Akron's defense, like ours, we are both state-funded schools. I DO NOT agree with dumping tuition or tax payer money into a sports arena. But I stand my ground, between the 2 worst arenas in the league, ours is not the worst.

RE: Kent State @ Akron
I recall the politics surrounding the building of the JAR. They desperately needed a new facility. Does anyone remember where they played before the JAR? It was called Memorial Hall and seated only about 3,000. It opened in the mid-50's and replaced Crouse Gym, I think it was. Of course, at the time the Zips were in the smaller of the two NCAA basketball divisions. The politics at the time favored southern Ohio. Ohio University got a new facility, the Grover Center for the 1960/61 season and then got yet another new facility less than ten years later! To make a long story short, Akron had been promised state aid for something new. And that is all they got. It was "new". The point was to keep the promise by keeping it as cheap as possible.

AlphaFlash: No stats on the board.

There are 5 video boards in the JAR. 2 of the boards show individual stats for both teams simultaneously. The other 2 boards show teams stats for both teams simultaneously. Don't know where you were looking during the game but the stats are visible from every seat in the building. The Convo at OU is getting a new video system similar to the JAR. It should be ready for next season. Don't fall behind Flashes!

Can we agree that WMU has a building worse than both the JAR and MACC?

According to the newly approved master plan

"The Board approved replacing the existing 12-year-old scoreboard system in the MAC Center with a new center-hung digital videoboard that can be formatted uniquely for individual sporting and community events and will include upgrades to the public address and sound systems. The existing static scoreboard uses obsolete technology and does not have the dynamic capabilities needed for the varied events utilizing the MAC Center. The estimated renovation cost of $1.7 million will be supported through philanthropic and advertising revenues."

Now, what is going on with our rebounding? After all these years as HC, how is our offense not better? I saw some X & Os being run, but the execution is terrible. Our luck last year was due to Jimmy Hall. Senerhoff should give his bonus to Jimmy. If not for his play in the post-season, Rob could be packing his office after next year. Our inside game is weak. Ball handling is sloppy. Travels all over the place. Did I mention one of the basic fundamentals: defensive rebounding?

SAW KENT AT THE MAC TOURNAMENT --- You are what your record says your are, that's true. But Also .. you are what your roster says you are.

Based on comparative stats, improvement by ADL this season and a few others shows there is talent on hand, and much of it is coming back.

But ... beyond the starting 5 that may be the worst bench Kent has had in decades ... There was not one quality backup at any of the five positions!!!

With the exception of Pippen, none of the bench players expected to impact the team (Johnson, Nwanko, Frederick, Duling) did more that provide rest. Production, not so much at all, and Peterson was the biggest hurt of all as stated above. This team did not miss JHall nearly as much as it missed DEdwin. ... Now, with Zabo gone, instead of having three guys capable of attacking the basket (Edwin, Zabo, JW) Kent is down to only one.

Find a replacement for Edwin and Zabo ... and Kent is 3-4 games better, and that adds up to a 20-win season. ... Not saying that wins the MAC or a MAC Tournament, but it at least offers enough to go to war with a chance.
