There are very few that disagree, but he's also 152 years old.

Wait...Wikipedia says he owns a house of Figure 8 island (about 5 minutes from me by boat). I think it's time for an amphibious assault. How many bags of Werther's Originals do you think it will take to get him back on the horse?

RE: Confirmed: Compher Out at ECU
HTC put up a little more info about the role Hart will play. 6-month contract.

“I’ve asked him to come in and do a review of ECU athletics, top to bottom,” Staton said in an interview with 94.3 The Game. “A 360 degree review. I think there’s probably no one in the country that’s in a better position or has a better background to do so than Dave Hart. We need to really take stock of where we are, the challenges that we face and where we really need to go with our programs.

“Besides that, I’m really asking Dave to really look at our financial affairs. One of the things that has come to my attention and has really slapped me in the face over the last several months, is how we compare to the teams in the American Conference. We start off about $17 million behind other teams in our conference on average in terms of athletic budget. What are we going to do about that? How are we going to address that concern? I think that’s one thing Dave is uniquely qualified to help with.”

At least someone finally came to their senses, got rid of Compher, and got a competent person in to help right this mess.

This is the smartest thing Staton has done during this whole fiasco. At least he has always seemed concentrated on fund raising for the university. This hire and getting a good basketball coach will go a long way towards public perception and athletic giving. If Mo gets us to a bowl (as promised), I will suck it up, and say okay, proceed. At least baseball is still good.

I think he's referring to the average amount that the other public schools in the conference get from their states. We fund raise pretty well comparatively (when football is decent), but it's a large starting shortfall.

Doubtful. As much as I am disappointed in Montgomery's performance to date, he needs to be reassured that his job is safe for at least the upcoming year. He guaranteed a bowl game - if he delivers he earns another year, otherwise I'll consider his guarantee a conditional resignation.

I think he's not the one that needs to be reassured. It's us that needs to be assured that he knows what he's doing.

Just saying he doesn't need to go into the year feeling that the new AD has already made his mind up regardless of what Mo does. Plus a coaching change mid-season would be more disastrous than letting Mo coach out the year.

In full disclosure, I fully expect him to be gone.

I am just saying that he doesn't need to go into the new year. Period.

He has not shown anything in his first two years that would indicate that there is hope for a good outcome in year 3. It is not mid-season. They haven't even gotten to Summer camp yet.

That ship has sailed. ECU football is tied to Mo for the present, whether he is an anchor (likely) or sail (unlikely) is the question. My point is dropping anchor now will be more detrimental than limping along with a torn sail and seeing if it can be patched. Teams need continuity. Firing a coach ever 3 years isn't continuity.

Dave Hart to oversee basketball search, focus on finances

“That is the one thing that’s time-sensitive,” Staton said of the basketball search. “Dave is well-positioned through his contacts, his relationships, his reputation, to really get out there and help us do that one relatively quickly.”

Although Hart’s only agreed to a short-term council role to the chancellor for now, it’s not out of the realm of possibility he could get a second look as a full-time AD at the end of his current term.

“This is the way we want to do it for right now. I don’t want to rush,” Staton said. “I can’t really answer that question today. I want to be fair to Dave. He and I have no plan, imminent or otherwise that take us to that point. I can say I’m not afraid of that conversation.

Is this true? Yikes!

I think he's referring to the average amount that the other public schools in the conference get from their states. We fund raise pretty well comparatively (when football is decent), but it's a large starting shortfall.

These are the most recent revenues (2016) from the U.S. Dept. of Ed.
ECU $45,751,164
Cincinnati $46,776,240
Houston $48,820,426
Memphis $48,443,154
SMU $57,193,821
Temple $52,394,437
Tulane $42,459,986
Tulsa $42,444,847
UCF $51,128,904
UConn $83,374,163
USF $49,960,339
WSU $26,192,382
Navy athletics said its policy is “to not release confidential data of this matter.”
Not counting Wichita State or Navy, ECU averages $6,548,468 less than these 10 schools. If you toss out UConn's huge $83 million, it's $3,095,742.

USA Today lists revenue for just these schools, a little differently:
UConn $79,229,275
UCF $59,379,453
Cincinnati $59,062,156
Houston $51,469,297
Memphis $50,027,341
USF $47,160,819
ECU $44,613,084
This would put ECU $13,108,306 behind these 6 schools. Only $8,806,729 behind not counting UConn.

As for state money, USA Today also lists allocated funds. These are, "The sum of student fees, direct and indirect institutional support and state money allocated to the athletics department, minus certain funds the department transferred back to the school."
UConn $35,270,821
UCF $26,838,366
Cincinnati $24,892,123
Houston $25,155,485
Memphis $18,364,385
USF $23,403,049
ECU $18,897,030
This puts ECU $6,757,008 behind the average.

I know there's a difference in revenue, expenses and budget, but I figure this is at least a guideline. I don't know where the $17 million figure comes from. The truth is out there.

With Hart coming in, Compher gone and hopefully a good basketball hire, it's time for Pirate supporters to go 100%. Even football. There's no need to protest or argue over Coach Mo, because if he doesn't produce this year I feel sure he will be gone the next. Support needs to start now.
