Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/spor...story.html[/align]

“Since August,” Thompson said, “I have spoken to six university presidents and/or athletic directors that have called inquiring about whether we are going to expand, and the Zags are one of them.

I guess the adjective I’d use is exploratory. Truthfully, what we’re trying to do here is better ourselves and we’re trying to understand what are your goals and ambitions, and what are the Mountain West’s goals and ambitions. Is there something there? … But obviously, they would enhance our basketball enterprise.”

That would make tremendous sense.

RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
Gonzaga would be a great counter by the MWC to Wichita State for the AAC. I would jump on it if they are serious. That woudl help scheduling with a 12th school, and really help RPI.

Who are the other five? I can probably guess two for sure, New Mexico State (they ask everyone frequently, as they wait for an opening), and Grand Canyon (they are looking around for the future). One wonders if Rice and UTEP who were the last two schools looked at seriously, probably also touched base. None of these four I just mentioned expects much traction, more a "we're here and interested when your ready' sort of calling card. But that is speculation. But it does makes you wonder who else left a calling card.

From a MWC perspective, if Gonzaga is serious, I'd jump on it. No other school could raise the profile and get the MWC recruiting and performance back to 2 or 3 bid NCAA status.

Sounds like BYU would go over too in such a deal. That would be huge, IMO.

I couldn't imagine them sticking in the WCC sans Gonzaga, that's for sure. BYU would have to do something at that point for basketball(and could be forced for football as well).

Depends on how hard the MWC pushes for BYU football and how firm Gonzaga is to make sure that BYU comes along. It would be a no-brainer to bring Olympic sports back to the MWC with Gonzaga!

It would be extremely hard for BYU football to go back to the MWC. But, I'm certain you could get a 5-game football scheduling deal.

EDIT: Earliest BYU could reasonably make 8 openings available for the MWC football schedule, without major buyouts, would be 2023.

RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
BYU would be stuck. I'm pretty sure nobody wants to reopen that can of worms

This is Gonzaga only. That Thompson dropped their name and nobody else is telling. With the next TV contract coming up, this would be a smart move. 12 is easier to schedule than 11. (They have the "Navy" problem with Hawaii also as FB only)

RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
My guess:

Gonzaga, Rice, UTEP, N. Texas, UTSA, and NMSU.

Yes, that would be huge if BYU came back for Olympic sports with a ND-like deal.

RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
That article has an extremely rosy MWC spin. Gonzaga's RPI is "dragged down" by the bottom of the WCC? The answer to that problem is not the bottom of the MWC: CSU at 215, AFA at 239, and SJSU at 304 is an extremely small "improvement" over Loyola at 260, Portland at 275, and Pepperdine at 325. "Assuming San Diego State, UNLV and New Mexico can return to their past levels" -- C'mon. They're all struggling now. Assuming that all of them will somehow start to win every year as much as they did in their best two or three years out of the past 20 or 30 years is not a reasonable assumption, it's just a dream. The best argument that you could make for the MWC over the WCC is that most of the MWC's bottom feeders at least have the ambition to become much better in men's hoops at some point in the future, whereas I don't know that you could say that about Portland or Pepperdine.

But if this ever did happen, then it would be another potential extinction event for the WAC. Seattle would undoubtedly move to the WCC if they have to replace the Zags.

Also, I know that we should never expect anyone to "do the right thing" in college sports, but if the MWC is really looking to add new members to beef up their basketball, NMSU should be on the list.

RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
New Mexico has been good over the past 25 years off and on and they have the facilities and support in place, so it's hardly a fluke for them to be good. Well, except in the NCAA Tournament for some reason.

Ditto for UNLV, who won't get back to the Tarkanian days most likely but could very well win 20-25 games a season again. We'll see on SDSU, who wasn't anything special before Fisher arrived.

RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
Talking to Gonzaga is a great move. You could bring them in to balance Hawaii football.

This weakens the WCC and might cause BYU to consider coming too. If BYU is willing to come in as a full member you invite UTEP too and the end product is 14 football schools and 14 basketball schools.

Seattle finally has a path to WCC membership and C-USA has to do some evaluating to decide who replaces UTEP or if they stick with 13 in anticipation of downsizing further in the future.

Well, BYU can't come unless they bring football. Besides, GU brings more power than BYU.
Maybe BYU will finally win the WCC without GU.

I'm not sure Saint Mary's is that attractive. Despite top-25 rankings and playing in a huge media market, they have little fan support or following.

But, more importantly, BYU would probably stick with independence and a watered-down WCC versus playing in the Mountain division or that Rockies bball quadrant. Here's how you tempt BYU:

- ensure annual home-away basketball games with Gonzaga and Utah St. and one of UNLV, SDSU, or New Mexico.

- ensure annual football games against Boise St. and Utah St., even if cross-division.

- let them phase-in to full membership by 2023 - to avoid substantial and costly game buyout penalties. 4-6 games until then, with Utah St. and Boise St. as annual opponents.

So, the answer for football is to align all the legacy MWC schools, except for BYU, in the MWC South Division - plus UTEP or NMSU.

MWC SOUTH
SDSU
UNLV
Air Force
Wyoming
CSU
New Mexico
NMSU/UTEP

MWC NORTH
BYU
Boise St.
Utah St.
Hawaii
Fresno St.
SJSU
Nevada

This way, BYU keeps its two rivalry games, rekindles its rivalry with Hawaii, and gets an annual game in California.

For basketball quadrants:

NORTH
Gonzaga
Boise St.
Utah St.
BYU

WEST
Fresno St.
SJSU
Saint Mary's
Nevada

SOUTH
SDSU
UNLV
New Mexico
Grand Canyon

EAST
Wyoming
Colorado St.
Air Force
NMSU/UTEP

*Go to a 20-game conference basketball schedule, so you play your quad plus two others home-away; everyone else once (rotating home-away every other year). Stack the schedules so that Gonzaga and Saint Mary's play annually (and perhaps BYU and Saint Mary's).

RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
BYU's independence is what gives them a more or less level playing field against Utah in recruiting. They aren't coming back to the MWC any time soon.

Also, unless BYU is giving up its P5 ambitions, the MW doesn't need them. They'll already up and leave....again.

RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
Gonzaga - adds a new market and a stable basketball program

UTEP - the MWC is the conference they should have been in for years

Rice - perhaps Rice can have TCU-like success in this western conference separate from the other Texas C-USA schools (besides UTEP)

Mountain
Rice
UTEP
UNM
Air Force
Colorado State
Wyoming
Utah State

West
Boise
Nevada
UNLV
San Diego State
Fresno State
San Jose State
Hawaii (Gonzaga)

Not sure how BYU would fit into this situation.

BYU to the AAC seems more likely along with Air Force football only.

Depends on how BYU views this. If the Zags go, then BYU could be the Big Fish in the little pond. Sealing up NCAA bids for Olympic Sports. I think if they could get a ND type deal with MWC, that would be better for BYU.
