I'm not sure Saint Mary's is that attractive. Despite top-25 rankings and playing in a huge media market, they have little fan support or following.

But, more importantly, BYU would probably stick with independence and a watered-down WCC versus playing in the Mountain division or that Rockies bball quadrant. Here's how you tempt BYU:

- ensure annual home-away basketball games with Gonzaga and Utah St. and one of UNLV, SDSU, or New Mexico.

- ensure annual football games against Boise St. and Utah St., even if cross-division.

- let them phase-in to full membership by 2023 - to avoid substantial and costly game buyout penalties. 4-6 games until then, with Utah St. and Boise St. as annual opponents.

So, the answer for football is to align all the legacy MWC schools, except for BYU, in the MWC South Division - plus UTEP or NMSU.

MWC SOUTH
SDSU
UNLV
Air Force
Wyoming
CSU
New Mexico
NMSU/UTEP

MWC NORTH
BYU
Boise St.
Utah St.
Hawaii
Fresno St.
SJSU
Nevada

This way, BYU keeps its two rivalry games, rekindles its rivalry with Hawaii, and gets an annual game in California.

For basketball quadrants:

NORTH
Gonzaga
Boise St.
Utah St.
BYU

WEST
Fresno St.
SJSU
Saint Mary's
Nevada

SOUTH
SDSU
UNLV
New Mexico
Grand Canyon

EAST
Wyoming
Colorado St.
Air Force
NMSU/UTEP

*Go to a 20-game conference basketball schedule, so you play your quad plus two others home-away; everyone else once (rotating home-away every other year). Stack the schedules so that Gonzaga and Saint Mary's play annually (and perhaps BYU and Saint Mary's).

Wouldn't be surprised in that scenario if AAC offers BYU a ND type deal.

If I were the AAC, I would be trying to get Army and Air Force to join. Army for football only. Air Force, whichever they prefer. Put the 3 service academies in the same division, giving AF and Navy more scheduling flexibility.

Zaga is guaranteed to be one.
BYU is obvious #2 but that puts them into awkward spot if MWC comes along and says add football or leave, but if Zaga is going then it gets harder to like WCC
NMSU has certainly called.
Grand Canyon probably has called.
UTEP and Rice apparently called in the past.
Then there is the weird tweet that claimed Arkansas State was in the hunt a few weeks ago.

I've lobbied for a while for BYU, Boise, San Diego St, and AFA as full American members. They'd play in a western division with Tulsa, SMU, Houston, and Wich St/Navy.

In basketball they'd effectively play as two conferences with double round robin among the division and minimal match ups with the other division.

UTEP - the MWC is the conference they should have been in for years

Rice - perhaps Rice can have TCU-like success in this western conference separate from the other Texas C-USA schools (besides UTEP)

Rice
UTEP
UNM
Air Force
Colorado State
Wyoming
Utah State

West
Boise
Nevada
UNLV
San Diego State
Fresno State
San Jose State
Hawaii (Gonzaga)

Not sure how BYU would fit into this situation.

Rice already was in a western based conference. They like playing regional rivals. C-USA when they entered it was the best case scenario for them short of joining the Patriot League or a dreamt up Southern equivalent, the SWC or any current traditional power conference (all have schools Rice can identify with).

(02-28-2018 06:54 PM)Wedge Wrote:  That article has an extremely rosy MWC spin. Gonzaga's RPI is "dragged down" by the bottom of the WCC? The answer to that problem is not the bottom of the MWC: CSU at 215, AFA at 239, and SJSU at 304 is an extremely small "improvement" over Loyola at 260, Portland at 275, and Pepperdine at 325. "Assuming San Diego State, UNLV and New Mexico can return to their past levels" -- C'mon. They're all struggling now. Assuming that all of them will somehow start to win every year as much as they did in their best two or three years out of the past 20 or 30 years is not a reasonable assumption, it's just a dream. The best argument that you could make for the MWC over the WCC is that most of the MWC's bottom feeders at least have the ambition to become much better in men's hoops at some point in the future, whereas I don't know that you could say that about Portland or Pepperdine.

But if this ever did happen, then it would be another potential extinction event for the WAC. Seattle would undoubtedly move to the WCC if they have to replace the Zags.

Also, I know that we should never expect anyone to "do the right thing" in college sports, but if the MWC is really looking to add new members to beef up their basketball, NMSU should be on the list.
The WCC has 4 teams at RPI 248 or lower.
Gonzaga 30
St Mary's 39
BYU 86
San Diego 143
San Francisco 150
Pacific 182
Santa Clara 248
Loyola Marymount 262
Portland 274
Pepperdine 327

with that they have in conference play
tier 1- 1 game
tier 2- 2 games
tier 3- 3 games
tier 4- 12 games

meanwhile MWC has 14/49/83/149/98/83/127/151/240/215/304 RPI right now. So 3 vs 4 for WCC sub 200. But the thing is while it's 8 conference games sub 200 for WCC, it'd only be 3 for MWC as you only play 7 teams 2x. So even going 151 or lower- it'd be 4 games for MWC vs 10 in the WCC. That's a HUGE difference for the SOS.

MWC would have
tier 1- 3 games
tier 2- 5 games
tier 3- 6 games plus at least 1 of the 151/240/215 games on the road, if not 2.
tier 4- either 2 or 3 games

Yeah a huge difference there.

“Since August,” Thompson said, “I have spoken to six university presidents and/or athletic directors that have called inquiring about whether we are going to expand, and the Zags are one of them.

I guess the adjective I’d use is exploratory. Truthfully, what we’re trying to do here is better ourselves and we’re trying to understand what are your goals and ambitions, and what are the Mountain West’s goals and ambitions. Is there something there? … But obviously, they would enhance our basketball enterprise.”

Wow.

Wow.

Wow.

Wow.

Wow.

So who is calling the MWC?

Gonzaga
St. Mary's
New Mexico St
UTEP
Rice
Grand Canyon

Those are my guesses.

I like this better:

Mountain: Air Force, Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State, Wyoming
West: Fresno State, Hawaii/Gonzaga, Nevada, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, UTEP

Protected crossovers: BYU vs. Hawaii/Gonzaga, New Mexico vs. UTEP

The FB conference schedule is upped to 9 games, allowing for a full playthrough in 3 years while still having protected crossovers (a la the Big Ten).

The BB conference schedule is 20 games, with home-and-away vs. each school in the division (12 games) and against one school in the opposite division (2), plus one game against every other school in the opposite division (6).

Preferably, Boise and UTEP would be flipped so you'd retain a more east-west divide, but that was my concession to BYU. I don't know why the MWC would need to bend over backward for them.

This puts the WAC in a crisis mode as Seattle and possibly GCU could be gone to the WCC. More DII callups now do not do any good.

I've been calling for this one for several years. I don't understand what has taken the Mountain West so long to approach them.

Hasn't the WAC been in crisis mode since at least 2011?

RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
The MW should be cautious about following the oBE path of adding too many non-football schools. That just creates division and eventual splits.

The issue I see is the sweetheart deal that Boise State got. If the MW is using some BB money to fund that deal, then Gonzaga is just moving from one bad deal to another.

More like 1998.

The MW didn't approach Gonzaga, they approached the MW. The MW is a football conference and no need to focus on non-football schools.

BYU didn't approach the MW. They think they are P5 and the MW would only let them back in with football.

Gonzaga, St. Mary's, NMSU, Grand Canyon, UTEP, and Rice.

BYU really gets put in a bind, the WCC probably kills the WAC taking Seattle and maybe Utah Valley.

You want to do a package travel partner deal and put the Ozark Mountains in the Mountain West.

I'm down with it. Geologists claim the Ozarks were once higher than the Rockies. That's gotta count for something. I'd have zero problems convincing my wife to go for road trips to New Mexico, Air Force, Colorado State, Wyoming, SDSU or Nevada. 04-cheers
