MAC Coach of the Year
Toledo fan here. I’d give Murphy my vote.

RE: MAC Coach of the Year
At the time the thread started, I voted Owens, but given the results of the final week, I’d vote Oats.

Oh, I do know and they absolutely play a role.

Buffalo returned 2 of their top 5 scorers from last year so Oats had plenty of talent to replace - which he has done so successfully. Massinburg and Perkins have improved in every season they've been here. Start to finish Buffalo has been the top team in the MAC this year. That sounds like the best coaching job in the MAC.

Of course we have no idea if pre-season expectations play ANY role in COY. We don’t get to choose. I think what some people are saying by their choices is that it’s possible to do the best coaching job without having the best record.

I’m still curious as to which coach you would vote for if you couldn’t vote for Oats? I think we get that all the UB fans on here want their coach to win, Toledo fans like their coach, etc.

There are some sports that take the voting out of it and give COY to the conference champ. That kind of takes the fun out of it.

I'm just saying "they're good but they were supposed to be good" shouldn't be a knock against a coach in an award for best coach.

If I were't voting for Oats, Coach K at Toledo would be my choice. Toledo has been the second most consistently good team throughout the season and they prove to be a match-up problem for most in the league. His players have both size and shooting ability. His biggest knock is obviously his record against the other top teams in the MAC, but I've been impressed by their offensive efficiency.

I've been very impressed by Jack Owens at Miami. He had a lot to replace and in a short time has filled that team with a bunch of very promising players. They've struggled down the stretch so he isn't my top choice but they're the only team that has beaten Buffalo with 40 solid minutes of play in the conference slate.

EMU may very well be the hottest team in the MAC right now, but weren't EMU fans just calling for his firing about a month ago?

Yeah, some of our fans can be nutty.

I would vote for Murphy because of expectations and record.

We returned 3 scholarship players from last season: thompdon, bond and nobles.

No one else had played a game for EMU.

Isn't he responsible for only having 3 scholarship players return? 3rd best record in the conference warrants a COY vote for a guy in his 7th year?

If UB were to win the tourney, they would have slightly exceeded expectations, but it’s irrelevant because COY is based on the regular season and awarded before the tourney is over. So what expectation did Oats exceed by a good amount?

I don't think that is really a fair way to look at it. That's like saying a player who has an amazing season shouldn't win MVP because his team was really good, but a guy on a garbage team who did ok should automatically get it. It's certainly a gray area.

No arguments from me. He constructed the best team in the conference, and led them to what was expected. Congrats, Coach Oats.

Question to Buffalo fans: Do you think he gets poached if he makes the tournament again?

I'm worried he gets poached even if we don't.

Consider he was Bobby Hurley assistant and while not the face under Hurley he was they guy coordinating our recruiting efforts. so really he has been building this team for five seasons.

Enter the fact our AD just got poached by Auburn and we have the kind of vacuum which has kept us from upping his deal. I would have hoped by now UB would have put together a better contract for him, at least pay him what you were offering Hurley when he left.

Reportedly about 550K plus incentives.
