Pensacola tournament baseball
Here's some quick glance stats/info on each team in the tournament starting with our Friday opponent Eastern Michigan. I'll add Ohio St and Nicholls St later this week.

EMU is 1-7 with 1 of the losses to a non D1 opponent. They do not play again until our Friday matchup. They started their season losing 7 straight (all on the road) but finished off their weekend at Jackson St last week with a win. Granted their competition hasn't been too good but they haven't lacked in putting up runs; but based off their record they are allowing much more than they've scored.

As a team EMU is batting .309, 7 HR and has gone 27-34 in SB 04-jawdrop (10 of the 12 players that have a plate appearance have at least 1 SB). They have struck out twice as much as they have walked (64 K to 32 BB)
Leading hitters:
#17 Schuemann - .500 (18 for 36), 3 HR (team lead), 7 RBI (2nd on team), 9-9 SB (team lead)
#2 DeVenney - .417, 1 HR, 6 RBI (also their Sunday SP)
#23 Hager - .391 (9 for 23), 0 HR, 1 RBI
#7 Timko - .368, 0 HR, 5 RBI
#24 Owings - .367, 8 R, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 6-7 SB

Pitching wise EMU has a team ERA of 9.09, allowed 12 HR, struck out 40 and walked 32 while teams are hitting .347 against them. They've allowed 12 SB in 16 attempts. Only 3 of their 13 pitchers have an ERA under 5.00 but none of those have any starts
#3 Feldman has started both game 1s in their 2 weekend series so assuming he would start against us.
Feldman JR RHP
0-1, 5.68 ERA, 12.2 IP, 14 hits, 7 K, 6 BB, 2 HBP, .304 BA allowed
6 innings and 6.2 in his 2 starts

Season results
lost 4 at Florida Gulf Coast (5-6, 3-12, 11-12 and 7-8)
lost at non D1 Lynn College 13 to 17
lost 2 of 3 at Jackson St (3-5, 6-8, 9-3)

EDIT --- EMU has put their weekend game notes out and it appears they will pitch Feldman against us. Also didn't realize until reading the game note they have an interim coach who took over that title on January 3. The previous head coach left to be the pitching coach at Michigan St where he came from to become the EMU head coach.

http://www.emueagles.com/documents/2018/...df?id=5359

Lineup by position (not batting order)
C 14 Nick Jones .314
1B 24 Zachary Owings .367
2B 5 Drake Peggs .235
3B 23 Devin Hager .391
SS 17 Max Schuemann .500
LF 7 Jeff Timko .368
CF 9 Cameron Cruz .238
RF 28 Nate Jones .192
DH 30 Kolton Schenker .235

RE: Pensacola tournament baseball
See last paragraph in previous post for some updated info on EMU...and now on to Ohio St

Ohio St comes into the weekend with a 5-3 record. They split last weekend at a tourney in Arizona against Oregon St (lost 10-8 and 6-1) and Utah (won 7-2 and 20-13).

Offensively they are hitting .311 as a team with 5 HR (1 player has 3, another has 2), 6-8 in SB, while striking out 79 times compared to 48 BB. They have 5 players with at least 7 starts (out of 8 possible) who are batting .333 or better

**These 5 have started all 8 games
#4 McGowan .429, 11 R, 3 HR, 19 RBI (all stats are either team lead or tied for team lead)
#2 Foppe .387, 10 R, 4 RBI, 2-3 SB
#12 Cowles .379, 10 RBI
#39 Pohl .333, 10 R, 2 HR, 7 RBI
#33 Canzone .294, 11 R, 6 RBI, 3-3 SB

Pitching wise they are starting
RHP Ryan Feltner, 1-0, 6.55 ERA, 2 starts, 11.0 IP (5 in 1st start, 6 in 2nd start), 12 H, 12 K, 5 BB, 3 HBP with a .286 BA against.
Interesting tidbits about Ohio St pitching overall is that they have yet to allow a HR this year as well as they have hit 15 batters in their 8 games

RE: Pensacola tournament baseball
Nicholls St hasn't put out game notes so I will update later today/tomorrow with the SP info.

Nicholls comes into the weekend with a 1-7 record including a 2-1 loss on Wednesday to UL Lafayette which is the only game they've allowed less than 5 runs. Their only win was game 4 of their opening 4 game series vs Stony Brook. 3 of their 7 losses were by 1 run each while they've also lost games by 2 and 3 runs each so they very easily could be 4-4, 5-3 or 6-2.

Hitting wise they are batting .271 with 4 HR, 62 K, 25 BB and just 2 of 7 in SB.
These 4 have started all 8 games and are the better statistical batters:
#3 Valdez .400, 2 R, 2 RBI
#11 Morales .333, 4 R, 1 HR, 6 RBI
#10 Teer .323, 4 R, 6 RBI
#18 Knauth .281, 6 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI

Pitching wise as a team they have a 6.39 ERA, only allowed 3 HR, .324 BA against, 43 K to 35 BB while hitting 13 batters.

RE: Pensacola tournament baseball
Feltner is a hard-throwing righty (93-97 fastball). His career stats aren't great, but he's definitely projectable. D1 has him as the #1 2018 prospect in the entire Big 10. Pitched on the Cape last summer.

Iacobelli (3rd string catcher) transferred here from Eastern Michigan. Wonder if they put him in late if we have a big lead.

RE: Pensacola tournament baseball
2 articles from Penscacola paper on this weekend's action. The first is one on USM while the 2nd is their thoughts on the top 5 players to watch:

USM article
https://www.pnj.com/story/sports/2018/02...381654002/

5 players to watch at tournament (see below for article)
https://www.pnj.com/story/sports/2018/03...383084002/

1. Nick Sandlin, RHP, Southern Miss: One of the nation’s top pitchers, Sandlin was a preseason first-team All-American according D1Baseball.com and Perfect Game while being voted the preseason Conference USA Pitcher of the Year by league coaches.
He earned second and third team All-American honors for Southern Miss (6-2) as a sophomore in 2017, closing out games for the Golden Eagles as they came within outs of an NCAA Super Regional.
Transitioning into a starters’ role, Sandlin owns a 0.00 ERA through two starts this season, striking out 23 batters and allowing just seven hits through 14 innings.
It certainly seems like Sandlin’s side-arm motion will be just fine with the additional innings.

2. Noah McGowan, UTL, Ohio State: The Buckeyes’ star utility man couldn’t have scripted a better start to his senior season.
McGowan was named Collegiate Baseball’s National Player of the Week on Feb. 19, a product of his 13-RBI weekend at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte.
Batting a lofty .429 with three home runs, McGowan’s 19 RBIs are ranked third nationally and match the total he produced in 2017.

3. Luke Reynolds, 3B, Southern Miss: The Mississippi State transfer has been on a tear for the Golden Eagles (6-2) in 2018, leading Southern Miss with a .469 batting average, four home runs and 15 RBIs through eight starts.
Reynolds played for the Bulldogs in 2015 before transferring prior to the 2016 season, citing concerns over his playing time according to the Sun Herald.
He got a measure of revenge on his former team as the Golden Eagles swept Mississippi State to open the regular season. Reynolds homered in the series and was 6-of-10 with six RBIs overall.
Reynolds’ 15 RBIs place him in a tie for ninth-best in Division this year, a number he’s looking to improve upon in Blue Wahoos Stadium this weekend.

4. Max Scheumann, SS, Eastern Michigan: Eastern Michigan’s speedy middle infielder is one of the nation’s best on the base paths.
Scheumann’s nine stolen bases in eight games ranks first in Division I. It’s a feat that’s been bolstered by his 18 hits this season, a statistic for which he ranks third nationally.
Altogether, Scheumann is batting .500 with three home runs and seven RBIs in a breakout season that many professional scouts saw coming.
Scheumann was rated the tenth-best MLB prospect in the Middle American Conference according to Baseball America.

5. Joey Morales, SS, Nicholls State: A four-year starting shortstop for Nicholls State (1-6), Morales makes up the core of a Colonel infield which returned all four starters this season.
Morales is batting a personal-best .333 so far this season to go along with one home run and five RBIs.
It’s been a rough start to the season for Morales and Nicholls State, though a strong performance from Morales in Blue Wahoos Stadium could help the Colonels get back on track.

RE: Pensacola tournament baseball
Nicholls St leading Ohio St 1-0 after 4.5 innings (OSU home team). It's truly been a pitcher's duel as there's only been 1 hit combined. Nicholls got a walk, sac bunt and RBI single to score the lone run.

FWIW, USM will be visiting team on Friday and Sunday, while we will be the home team Saturday

**EDIT** OSU breaks through and scores 5 so far in bottom 5 on 2 doubles, a single and a 3R HR.
