RE: Update - Former UNCW coaches and players
Billy Donlon left his assistant coaching job at Michigan to be assistant to good friend Chris Collins at Northwestern.
Which means he's also moved home.

RE: Update - Former UNCW coaches and players
After assistant coaching stints at College of Charleston and Virginia Tech, Mark Byington is in his fifth year as head coach at Georgia Southern. His record this year stands at 18-11, on the verge having his second best season. His best was his second season at 22-9. But he has yet to make the NCAA tourney. His team has a Sun Belt Conference record of 9-7 and sitting in third place, behind Louisiana and Georgia State.

Sunbelt is an underrated league. Good for Byington!

RE: Update - Former UNCW coaches and players
Kevin Eastman has had a bevy of different experiences since leading us to a 59-53 record from 1990-94.

First, he moved on to Washington State as head coach, where he went 68-79 from 1994-99, with NIT bids his first 2 seasons there.

After taking a break from coaching, he spent a year as Athletic Director for Randolph-Macon College from 2002-03, and served as the Nike Basketball National Director of Skills the year after.

Eastman then moved on to the NBA. From 2004-2013, he was an assistant coach to Doc Rivers with the Celtics, a tenure whose apex was back to back 60+ win seasons from 2007-2009, and an NBA Title in 2008.

In June 2014, Eastman re-joined Rivers to became the VP of Basketball Operations for the LA Clippers. Under his leadership, the Clippers had back-to-back 50+ win seasons, and in 2015, reached the Western Conference semi-finals.

Eastman announced his retirement from basketball in June 2016, at the age of 60. Eastman is now a corporate speaker.

Quite the career.

You just set your mind on something and don't even think to be flexible in your viewpoints sometimes.

You're a coach....What adjustments would you have made? Perhaps you can convince me we blew it. Just saying we had a lead and lost it doesn't suffice as a chokejob.

It was a long time ago, I can’t remember yesterday most days. If you have a 20 point lead in almost any situation and lose I find it difficult to say you didn’t blow it. Just my opinion. Last years adjustments are easy to discuss they are fresh. I don’t remember the specifics of a game flow from 12 years ago

ALMOST any situation. Which is exactly why I didn't just speak in generalities, and explained how this situation didn't qualify. We've blown leads before, and I'd gladly call those chokes. Not this one. And I remember this one well.

I accept your apology.

Kevin was a character of sorts. I remember a game american university when at the end of the game he tried to chase down Lennie Wirtz (one of the officials). Wirtz "swallowed" his whistle and made a no-call in the lane just before the buzzer. Our player (Reggie Vinney) had the ball & collided with an opposing player. A call of foul on the opposing player or travel on Reggie was clearly in order but I guess Lennie was ready to go home. Kevin chased him but (thankfully for all concerned) he didn't catch him. Kevin was a fierce competitor. When he was pi$$ed about the way the team was playing he would call time out and make the team gather around him at the free throw line in front of the bench. He did it in order for fans behind the bench not to hear the "choice words & colorful language" directed at the team. When he called a time out and went to the foul line almost everyone knew what was about to happen.

Great anecdotes Proff! Especially appreciated considering all I knew about Eastman only existed on paper. Seems like he was a solid coach who probably has forgotten more about basketball than 95 % of us know.

Eastman would get players' attention by stomping the floor with those loafers he wore. You could hear that all over Trask.

LOL I still don't agree. It was a crappy draw for sure, but we still should have won that game! I'll digress.

I had forgotten about his floor stomping. Kevin might not have stomped harder that Lefty Dreisell but he was close.

I was at the GW game and it was a great finish by a team with better players.
IMO Kevin Eastman is easily the best basketball coach in UNCW history if we are just talking the game and player development. I would put Brownell a close second followed by Wainwright and Keatts. Keatts was just not here long enough to really qualify in my mind as a all time type guy.

I was at the GW game too and we blew the game period. Not sure if TJ actually fouled the guy either.

The bench was thin and we gave out of gas. Only thing I might would question would be why we stopped going down low to Vlad.

Since someone feels obligated to post about a former coaches wins and gloat about where he predicted them, it’s only fair to post when same coach losses to one of the worst teams in the ACC and chokes away any chance at finishing top 4

State is dangerous, but will sometimes lose on the road due to their style. We saw that...trade and score. Still, you have to give credit at this point.

I predicted they would finish above .500 in the ACC(and was right) after everyone here was trashing Keatts and how he couldn't handle the ACC as a coach.

Keatts is doing a fine job. This is without a doubt their worst loss with Markel playing. That said, I don't recall everyone here trashing Keatts, or that he couldn't handle the ACC. Plenty questioned whether or not he could do better than NCSU, or if it was the best fit, but that had more to do with NCSU than Keatts. In fact, I'd say those early discussions had everything to do with NCSU, not Keatts.

By every standard Keatts over performed as a first year coach, in the best conference in America, with a roster of players that were used to losing.
Curious as to how you validate that statement, RPI has the ACC 4th
