I'll sleep on it and get back to the board.

Apples to oranges. Both walked into crappy situations, one won 20+ games one lost 20+.
Both deserve more time, but that doesn’t mean you have to be happy losing or can’t be critical that’s what makes us fans, not cheerleaders

Keatts has done a great job this year no doubt. But he inherited a very talented team. He exceeded expectations because Gottfried sucked.

Keatts is in his 4th year as a Head Coach. McGrath deserved that benefit of the doubt, but Keatts....not so much.

Keatts is a terrific head coach and will do really good things at NC State, yesterday notwithstanding.

Doesn't mean I have to like him or root for him.

Doesn't matter if he has been a head coach for 30 years. He walked into a program with mostly someone else's players. Unless their style is the same as the previous coach, very few coaches have walked into a program and did as well as Keatts has done. If you've noticed my posts in past, it's not just about Keatts. I have always said, even if I didn't like the choice, the new coach should be given time to implement their system before deciding they're not the right coach. It takes most coaches two or three years to get it going. I have no problem questioning decisions. But I do take issue with turning on a coach so soon. It's not only unfair to the coaching staff, but also the players. They, to some extent anyways, feel the vibes of the fan base. What I saw in the whole this year was a very supportive fan and student base. And I honestly believe it helped these guys play harder. They were out rebounding bigger teams in most games. Once they bought into the system, they played much better down the stretch.
Otherwise, it ok to question playing zone vs man. Or who is playing. That is the norm with all teams, no matter how good they may be.

But it's not the head coach's job to keep up with the timeouts. That's the job of an assistant coach. But hammering a first year coach who hasn't had time to implement his system with his players is rediculous. So many couch coaches, so little coaching jobs.

I coach from the sidelines too. There is no doubt he’s done a good job there this year, but 82 likes to pound his chestt when they do well he needs to man up when they don’t. And if you come out and basically talk $hit in the media like he did, then you deserve the $hit that comes at you when you choke against a lesser team

It is ABSOLUTELY up to the HC to know and tell his players first and last thing not to call a TO when you have none left and Keatts' face said it all after Johnson called one with none left.

And I have to agree with Seahawkhoops that if you're gonna start talking a little trash you absolutely better be ready to back it up. ACC isn't the CAA, and just because you beat UNC/Duke in the reg. season doesn't mean BC won't show up and beat you to death with basically 2 scorers.

RE: Update - Former UNCW coaches and players
It's still an assistant coach's job to keep the head coach informed of the timeouts. And who's to say that didn't happen? The players could have very well been told. Johnson may have gotten caught up in the moment. It happens. Remember Georgetown vs UNC and Fred Brown's errant pass. Mistakes are made in the heat of play.
And maybe Keatts was trying to show his players he had confidence in them with his talk. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

RE: Update - Former UNCW coaches and players
Keatts is in a good spot and he had some talent there to work with the guys he brought in. I thought he would win there and one game in the ACC tournament has not changed my mind at all. He does have to take 100% ownership for the TO if he going to talk smack and even if not it all goes back to the head coach. Even if he has delegated the duty to an another coach on the staff the HC shoulders it all and gets the big check . How about getting your team ready to play in the ACC tournament is a much better question. They were not ready to play and played virtually no defense for the entire game. He has to figure that out at some point if he going to win tournament games on the big stage.

Here's me waiting for someone to provide proof the players weren't informed they were out of timeouts....

You can't have it both ways 82. You want to give him credit when things go well, that's fine. But when they don't that's on him too. It's a 2 way street.

I am pretty damn sure at least one of them was not sure of it. End of the game they all have to be told multiple times and not just-hey no timeouts in the huddle. Own it or not it falls on the HC.
I am still waiting for an explanation for the lack or preparation for BC and no defense to speak of for the entire game. I saw here at UNCW and pointed it out all the time and it has not changed at NCSU. NO on ball half court defense-period. This is not something he can't fix-IMO.

Love you man, but you actually make it look that way by digging up any little negative you can find. My argument has consistently been about coaches in general. But then again, maybe you and Mullet should get a room. LoL

it's really not about you 33, it's 82. You are correct, i've counteracted his need to beat his chest every time he gets a big win with the negatives. Because life is about balance isn't it?

Everything is on the HC. Everyone understands that. But everybody has a job. Either the assistant coach didn't tell Keatts there were no TOs left or the player called it without thinking. Either way it's on the coach. Just the way it plays out. I have to believe that the assistant coach did his job. I was close enough to see how Keatts' staff communicates. They are actually very good at that.

Sorry, but you can't just make crap up and expect it to fly. You have zero proof of your statement that the players weren't told, yet you want to hang on to it. If you'd stick to actual, um, facts, it would be easier to have a discussion, but you're too emotional to do that. '

Whatever defensive issues Keatts may have as a coach, somehow or another his teams exceed expectations and win, just like they did at UNCW. Let's talk about Keatts taking a UNCW program that was a decade in the tank and taking the losing roster and making them winners. Let's talk about Keatts getting a win over UNC at Carolina, the year after they were beaten by 50+ points. Let's talk about the single loss Duke had at home this year to...NCSU. Let's talk about Keatts finishing tied for 3rd. in the ACC in his first year.

Or, we can focus on one loss in the ACC tournament which will have no real impact on what is important to Keatts, the NCAA tournament.

Looks to me Keatts thinks he can make up for the lack of defense in other areas of the game.

This is a crazy hill to die on.

1. It was a bad game for State, and a bad game for Keatts.

2. Keatts is a good coach.

3. It was ironic that they laid an egg to an inferior opponent in the first round of the tournament days after he said they had put the "NCStatestuff stuff to rest".

All can be true.
