RE: WMU/EMU Senior Night
We don't reach out to donors...That is the dumbest thing I've read today...Fleck brought in over $3,000,000 for Waldo upgrades..WMU grad Gores gave us over $2,00,000 for new Waldo scoreboards..Does the "Seelye" center name mean anything to people.. they gave us a big pile of cash to start the fundraising effort to begin construction on the center. we don't raise donor money.....really..
How about the $100,000,000 donation to kick start our Med-School from the Stryker family... Or the most recent $2,000,000 donation to our Med-School from Martha Parfet....
There is a long list of Alum's and friends who have given millions upon millions to various programs here at Western.
This kid just insulted everyone associated with Western..

Rendering was done two years ago. Send Kathy $8M and your name lives at UA forever. New president, new ideas, new direction.

So how about making the rendering public, along with those quotes from SH about how other schools don’t have to share facilities with 5 other sports.

If you want to sell the idea you have to do just. Sell it hard and ask for the sale. Social media is free. Press releases are free. Andy Pepper loves these kind of stories.

Please, if there’s a rendering, let us all see it.

Here is the biggest problem, you said send KB 8M.

That’s how our school has always fund raised. All or nothing.
8,000,000/$500 equates to 16000 donors.

Sell bricks with families names on them, auction game warn jerseys. Start a grass roots fundraiser, raise half and I’d bet the deep pockets would follow to get their name on the building. Set around and wait for a gazillionare to walk through the door, might take awhile.

Then why is our campus so severely outdated? A lot of the buildings on campus are from the 60s, some from the 50s even. Why are our basketball facilities outdated? Why does our division 1 men's basketball team share gym space with cheerleading and track? Why is our acceptance rate 85%!!? Heck you could even make an argument that Lawson should be updated. Don't get me wrong, Sangren, Western Heights, Valley dining center, chemistry building, all VERY nice buildings that bring a lot to the University. But there are still a ton of buildings that drag the campus down severely.

With exception of McCracken which is coming down our campus is very up to date and well maintained. The Union isn’t young, but it’s had several renovations and isn’t the least bit dated.

Miller is a jewel that no MAC School can touch.

I don’t even think Lawson or UA need replacing. Upgrade to black chair backs, put in a practice facility, and we’re fine. BG and the Chimps got new facilities and they still look like HS gyms. Balls, EMU, and NIU have great facilities. Hasn’t got them ****. Akron and Kent play in antiquated buildings and they’ve owned the MAC.

Eventually Bill Johnson will build an arena on WMUs land where Gilmore Car was and hockey will move there.

BTW....and not to be a jerk but it's Haworth....not Hayworth. Haworth is very particular on the spelling since it is part of their company branding.

That's a great idea. My wife and I are alums, if we were sent some material with a drawing of practice facility or hockey arena with a campaign goal we'd gladly donate. I'm sure there are thousands more more who'd do the same especially if you throw in bricks,etc..

Acceptance rate has nothing to do with the campus. That's similar to most MAC schools.

Also, while I can't stand our Student Union building (and wouldn't be surprised if that's what turns away a lot of prospective students touring our campus), we have a lot of great buildings. Not sure when the last time you were on campus, but the above list is perfect. Most of those were done in the past few years, too.

Personally, I like University Arena. Yes, it's not state-of-the-art, but it has a unique feel to it. In regards to does it help or hurt recruiting: We've been consistently winning the West, and most MAC facilities are very similar to each other.

Lawson, on the other hand, I don't like. It's very dark and the concourse needs help. It's a long-shot behind NCHC brethren like Miami of Ohio and North Dakota. However, I'd do a coaching change before facility upgrades.

Acceptance rate has a lot to do with a university's campus, the nicer the campus, the more desirable it is and the university is able to be more selective. Unlike how we are now where our acceptance rate is just over 80%.

WMU-84%
NIU- 50%
EMU-73%
Akron-70%
Buffalo-57%
CMU-70%
BG-53%

As you can see we are well behind most MAC schools. And I'm not sure why people keep comparing us to other MAC schools as an indicator of success. We shouldn't be worried about what other mac schools are doing we should be focusing on how WMU can be the best it can be. If anything we should be focusing on how we stack up against schools like Michigan, Northwestern, etc.

Who knows what those stats mean? You shouldn't read too much into them. Maybe prospective WMU students are simply more attuned to the programs we offer? WMU's programs are very focused on a career after college, a lot of college students have no idea what they want to be when they enroll. Those floaters are not the kind of folks who apply to a school like WMU.

A better stat is how many Freshman stay enrolled to get the degree they wanted. I'll wager freshman retention is lower at WMU than most MAC schools for that reason-WMU is more focused on career development.
