Buying Games/Guarantees
Kermit mentioned recently that Middle Tennessee does not "buy games" which I believe is the same thing as the "guarantee" terminology. We either get bought and/or do home and homes or some combination of that.

He went on to say that we will begin buying games next year. I don't know who we are "buying" for next year's schedule, but he referenced this in light of our progress in creating national brand awareness about the program. I assume it's also getting even more difficult to schedule would be opponents, so according to Kermit MT will start paying people to come to Murfreesboro to play us.

Does anyone else in the league buy games or is everyone basically in the same boat we've been in, which is scheduling as best you could without guaranteeing an opponent?

For G5's, a "buy game" is code for a FCS opponent. Not many G5 schools can afford a one and done "buy" game with a G5 opponent.

Basketball not football. We already buy I-AA games.

Western buys a couple in basketball each year. Any basketball game you don't return a home game with is a buy game. If you are in a tourney...they might buy you a home game. These tourneys that only have 8 teams that play in the Bahamas but start out with 12 teams....

the 4 schools that don't make the trip to the Bahamas will play a game each against the the 8 that do.

A buy game is almost a sure RPI killer...you are buying a game from a team that needs money. You can bet that team will be playing 4 or 5 of these games OOC

RE: Buying Games/Guarantees
2016-17 Western had buy games with

Alabama State 8-23
Jacksonville State 20-15
North Carolina A&T 3-29

If you are at the top of the conference expecting to compete for the championship....A d2 game would have been better for 2 out of 3 of those games.

But if you are a bottom team and can win those RPI killing games...it's better for the conference as a whole

As you and I agree on...schedule to your talent level. That means at times a D2 game would be better than a Alabama State

RE: Buying Games/Guarantees
I could see Kermit wanting to buy someone like FGCU rather than play a home and home with them. That's a team you know is going to win 20 games and help your RPI.

The going rate on these types of games is about $50,000 for a mens game and $5,000 for a womens game if its a swac or ohio valley team etc.

Southern Miss got 90k for going to florida state earlier this year.

Alabama St and Jacksonville St were part of the tournament WKU was in last season in Vegas. It was the home portion of the tournament before going to play Washington and UNLV.

I think I pointed out tourneys will give you buy games...no return involved. Both were still a "buy game" by someone. Even in off years where Western does not play in these types of tourneys...Western buy games. A. Peay was one of those till this season. And Western usually plays at least one other, D1/D2 buy game....

teams with large season ticket holders do this....if not they would have to lower ticket cost or people will look at it as a increase if it happened year after year

We play at least three or four per season. And on the flip side it’s well known around the UTEP community that power teams will not use us as a buy game.

This could also mean more non-D1 games. Trevecca was certainly a buy game.

I don't believe so.
