A win is a win. Phew they just held on. I think PSU had 7 of the final 8 goals scored.

I did no more research (too lazy and I've got to go to work), but the write-up says this, "In her first season at JMU in 2007, she led the Dukes to as high as No. 5 in the nation while being a mainstay in the national polls every week of the season. Madison was also ranked as high as No. 5 in 2008 and No. 16 in 2009 before the record-breaking year in 2010. In 2011, Madison finished the season ranked No. 11 in the nation while taking the CAA Tournament title before dropping a tough 11-10 decision to Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament."

Looked into this a bit, and I am not seeing the Dukes ranked #5 in 2008. Unless they were ranked #5 in RPI or some obscure ranking guide at some point, the highest I see on jmusports.com's write ups is #12. I am seeing the #16 ranking for the Lax team in 2009, though. The problem with those two years is the lack of success in the CAA. We were ranked in the preseason, lost to a bunch of very good ACC/Ivy League teams (mostly in the top 10), so we were ranked in the 15-20 range heading into CAA play. The team then went 3-4 and 1-6, respectively in the conference. Not trying to pick a fight, but just following up and doing some research. In my opinion though, none of that matters. What matters is the below:

The WL Dukes have three straight NCAA appearances, and this year's team is off to a great start. Next game is big, as it is at home against a ranked opponent (on Madizone btw). Let's continue to get behind this team and thank the fact that we have a great coach and great student-athletes.

Go Dukes!

Thanks, you did way more work than I was willing to do.

I was at the game. Lacrosse can be exasperating to watch and endure, momentum turns on a dime, draw controls all seem to go in bunches. A team that take 50 minutes to score 5 goals can then score 5 goals in a couple of minutes. Thank God it ended when it did.

Wasn't Penn State in the CAA for their WLax for a period? May have been some other sport.

Update: It was MLax from 2009 - 2014

What do you mean by the bold? I know nothing about the sport.

Draw Control is sort of the lacrosse equivalent of a face off in midfield. After each goal, they battle for control of the ball at midfield and you win the "draw control". Also known as gaining possession. For a while there, PSU almost exclusively maintained possession and just kept scoring.

A good face off player is as important or maybe more important as a good goalie. Lacrosse is all about possessions. Winning each face off puts a team on offense all of the time as missed shots out of bounds don’t change possession if your offense is positioned properly. You can keep shooting under the goalie gets the ball in his/her stick netting.

I remember several years ago, Towson MLax had a guy that was amazing at face offs. He would win the ball, and then immediately leave the field as a better field player would sub in for him.*

* - Lacrosse has hockey style substitutions, combined with a limit on how many players can be in the box.

My nephew played lacrosse. I know very little about it and asked him what position he played. He said FOGO. Face off, get off.

RE: 2018 Women's Lacrosse thread
Amazing 7-0 start. It's officially SPATTER hate week for women's lacrosse. Then they have a grueling set of road games at #7 UVA and #5 UMD. One thing those two opponents have in common are losses to UNC, whom we beat in OT.
UVA lost to UNC 13-9, while UMD lost to UNC 16-15 in OT. We beat UNC 15-14 in 2OT.
Another note, UMD are the defending champions. Neither program is a slouch with many national championships between the two.

For the Spatters, they're 4-1 but haven't played anyone of note other than UVA, who handled them 15-7. Wins over Campbell, American, Liberty and ODU. All unranked.

I think this our best hope for spring/summer glory. Hopefully madizone can start streaming more instead of just audio.

The next two games for these lady lax dukes are critical. We will be sitting very pretty for CAA play and the postseason if we can take both of these games against elite opponents.

UVA is ranked 7th but dropped a contest to #12 Loyola Maryland this week. They are 6-2 this season.
UMD is ranked 4th and are 6-1.

As a top 5, undefeated team JMU is already “sitting very pretty” (to use your phrase) for post-season. JMU just needs to finish conference play near the top.

I think what wins in these next couple of games will do may cement home games for the playoffs.

Wondering if the UVA game will be postponed. The snow has missed us multiple times this winter, but they're calling for a bunch of rain Tuesday and 6+ inches of snow on Wednesday. Most likely, either way, the weather will be awful.
