2014 Louisville game
So as recently as late 2014 we had a balls to the wall packed home crowd to watch us play highly ranked and defending champion Louisville. Down eight late our kids came back and won in dramatic fashion, sending the crowd partying on to Beale Street. A little earlier we knocked off Gonzaga at home in front of a massive crowd..similar Beale Street afterward
Six years earlier we knocked off ranked Georgetown at home in front of a frenzied crowd. That team ended the season one shot from a national title.
Penny Hardaway and Lorenzen Wright led teams to packed Pyramids to wins over the likes of Cincinnati.
A little over a half decade earlier we packed the Coliseum for wins over Oklahoma and Louisville and nearly everybody. And a decade before that Memphis fell in love with a Memphis State team that symbolized a coming together of a city just five years after the tragic assassination of MLK.
Then tonight, after a modest four game winning streak that had people willing if not excited...
We were blown out beyond all recognition by the worst or at best second worst team in the league...at home. Not upset by a fluke late three. Not defeated in a game where we played poorly but with effort but simply dropped one of those. Not to a good team.
To 1 win USF. At home. Getting taunted. By USF.
The goodwill from the modest streak was given back in 20 minutes.
Lord. Even the die hard in me that recognizes games end at the buzzer, and that we should still comfortably beat ECU and then USF in the AAC setting up a salve game is hard to resurrect.
Blown out, by the worst team in the league. At home.
