Rice T&F athletes at Boston University
This afternoon, 3 Rice athletes will complete at Boston University in the BU Last Chance Invitational. The goal is to be among the top 16 in his/her event in order to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2 weeks at Texas A&M. Scott Filip already has qualified in the Heptathlon.

Hannah Jackson currently is 25th on the list with her 23.25 in the 200 meters. Right now, 16th place is 23.14. There are conference championships this weekend, so that number may change.

Michelle Fokam is 33rd in the long jump at 6.13 meters (20' 1½"). As of now, 16th place is 6.27 meters (20' 7"). Michelle is also 58th in the triple jump, but it likely is too tough moving from 41' 3¼" to 42' 10½" all at once.

I believe that Matthew Murray is there for the mile, but that likely is just for experience because I don't see that he's capable just yet to post a 3:57.64.

To clarify, I mean top 16 on the NCAA list, to be found HERE. Just go to the drop-down menu, and click on "Indoor Lists."

Fokam finished 2nd with a best of 6.02 meters. Not an improvement. The girl who won from Binghamton went 6.29 meters so she should make NCAA's if she wasn't on the top 16 list already.

And I really don't understand how only 16 make it in the events. Especially in the sprint events when many of those athletes are doubling up in other events anyway. It just doesn't seem to make sense when 48 make it in the outdoor event (plus you have the regional qualifying meets) and just 16 indoors?

Jackson won the 60 (7.44 seconds). I'm assuming she ran it as a warm-up for the 200.

In outdoor track and field, 48 athletes from each of two regions qualify for each preliminary round. Only the top 12 from the two regions (24 total) advance to the championship site.

Hannah Jackson with a new lifetime best of 23.14 in the 200 meters! This puts her in a three way tie for 15th (depending on this weekend's results).

Technically, it was 23.131 - I don't know why they carried her time to thousandths (tie breaker perhaps?) ...

Matthew Murray with 4:06.33 in the mile - winning his section. That's a good effort, but obviously not enough for top 16.

SEC results from yesterday (finals are tonight). 200 finalists include 6 who were a bit faster in the prelims, but almost all of them are already ahead of her on the NCAA list. I think that might put her in a 2 way tie for 16th (one of the 3 was one of the 6 who went faster in prelims)?

I've been looking at the SEC results, also. At first, I didn't notice because on the heat sheets for today, they didn't list prelim times.

Hannah is tied for 17th. Only the top 16 make it. The only hope is that Sydney McLaughlin of Kentucky decides to concentrate on the 400, and does not enter the 200 (she did not enter the 200 at the SEC meet).

But, I'm still keeping an eye on the finals tonight at SEC because two Aggie runners, Thompson (23.15) and Spaulding (23.16) ran fast preliminary times and could be a threat to go faster (though they both have bad lanes).

No additional times ahead of Hannah's at SEC. She remains tied for 17th. Now, it's just time to wait and see who "declares" for the 200.

Wow McLaughlin (and Irby - the freshman from Georgia) both have superb times. I remember McLaughlin from 2016 Olympics. McLaughlin looks like she has a chance to set a collegiate record in the 400 at the NCAA's so let's hope she just concentrates on that event (and 4x400). I guess Irby could double up in the 200 and 400 because she won't be doing the 4x400?

Hannah Jackson just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 200 meters.

Her time (23.14) was the same as the final qualifier (Shania Collins of Tennessee). The tiebreaker is the 2nd fastest time, and Collins edged out Hannah by 23.23 versus 23.25. Just .02 of a second separates the two.

Sydney McLaughlin of Kentucky, the U.S. Olympian, is the national leader (and world leader) in the 400 meters, but has declared for the 200 (she did not run it at the SEC Championships). Kentucky has a strong team, and may compete for the national title, so I'm guessing that's why she's going to triple (200, 400, 4 x 400 relay).

That sucks but outdoor track is just around the corner and she should have no problems qualifying for the regional (and national meets - most of the top sprinters appear to be east coast runners?) if she stays healthy.

If McLaughlin is running the 200, who is not running. It looks like Jackson and Collins are tied for 17th?
