I know it's a reach but I wonder if Murphy is a potential successor to Jim Boeheim at Syracuse. Is Boeheim waiting for him to develop his resume and solidify himself as a winner? He obviously still has connections to that program and his family is still there. Perhaps this is why he is so committed to the Syracuse style of play.

Thoughts?

As much as I love the current hot streak, I don't believe any schools would offer him even if we go to the NCAA tournament. His overall Conference record is hovering at 0.500

I disagree. I think he would have good enough offers that would lure him out of Ypsi. He took a horrendous program and transformed it into a very respectable MAC team. An NCAA bid would be an icing on the cake so to speak.

'79, you win the prize for being closest (like in horse shoes).

I'm more afraid of losing him than he not being 'extended', if that is necessary.

I do think if we win the MAC tourney, he gets job offers at 2x his current salary. He would have 22 or 23 wins, including say 10 or 11 wins out of say of the last 12 or 13 game and that's enough to get a bunch of offers.

Good point on both accounts. If he wins the MAC Tourney, he definitely deserves an extension. More likely he gets offers elsewhere in addition to an extension offer.

He might want to stay anyway. I think he would want an eastern New York job or a Detroit area job. Not sure other offers necessarily come from either of those locations. Maybe Syracuse as Nickle points out. Anyway, I am excited for EMU to make the tourney and find out.

Boheim had been talking about retiring but almost everyone believes that was a ruse to get the NCAA to go easier on them in their recent disciplinary action. Syracuse's announced coach in waiting bolted to Washington last year presumably because he did not think Boheim was going anywhere. I think Rob would love the Syracuse job but I'm pretty sure any effort to get him there will come from the AD and not Boheim.

True.

I think the big issue is not an extension, per se, but is it automatic or negotiated?

One win makes it automatic, but would the AD dare not extend a coach who has won 7 of his last 8 conference games????

Murphy would have already been on contract for next year. He reogiated a 5 year contract after his first year with automatic year extensions for 20 win seasons. So he adds 2 years for 2013-14 and 2014-15 (Talley and Ward were so huge for this program). Of the total 8 years under contract, this is Mutpgy’s 7th.

He will likely get an additional year for this year- which we all seem to think he earned at this point. So Murphy will have 2 more years remaining.

I don’t think he deserved a further negotiated extension. As great as this rebound has been, it also brings up the question about why a team with such capabilities had such a slow start. I credit Murphy with a lot, both the season resurgence as well as having another talented team despite losing so many players after last year. But I still he flaws. This isn’t the year to fire the guy, but certainly not the year for an early extension either.

Depending on how EMU wins the conference tourney, I may have a different view on such an extension.

Frank, as usual is correct in his contract interpretation, Murphy has one more year on his current contract and a 20 win season will earn him yet another.

Thus you have to give Rob credit for abandoning his previous strategy of pursuing 2 year transfers like Toney, Mangum, etc... and building more for the future with his current freshman class of Groce, Ellison and McAdoo. Minnie and Jackson are far more likely to bridge you into another 20 win contract extension although you only have them 2 years. Ask dear Keno in Mt. Pleasant how much transfer Marcus Keene did for his program leading the NCAA in scoring and leaving after one year.

As far a contract extension, I see no reason for it, no matter how pleasurable the recent run has been. A contract extension, for MAC coaches is truly only a commitment from the school to pay a coach for how many years they contract to. In no way does it "lock" a coach in. Murphy's current contract allows him to leave at any time for a buyout of $210K which is chump change to Power 5 and superior mid-major programs not playing football like Villanova, Gonzaga, etc..

Gosh I am so happy of the progression of this team and its recent success, but if we win at Toledo Murphy's career record in the MAC will be exactly .500. You cannot blame the prior regime as his best season was his first, six seasons ago. That .500 record bests Ramsey and Boone but is behind both Barnes and Braun. Lets not let a resetting of expectations based on prior poor performance goad us into a needless contract extension.

Looks like if we are the 4 seed we will play Thursday around 2:30-3:00. If we are the 3 seed we will play around 9:00.

Conference stats through 17 games. A few things:

-With the beat downs of NIU and WMU, we actually jumped to 3rd in the conference in scoring margin, despite still being dead last in scoring offense. Quite a testament to our scoring defense, which is a full 5 points better per game than 2nd place Miami.

-We've cut back on the turnovers, and have settled in to the middle of the pack in that regard. I'd say that has been a HUGE factor in why we've won 7 of our last 8 games. We are doing a much better job of taking care of the ball, and it all starts with PJ and Ellison.

-Elijah Minnie and James Thompson each have more blocked shots (34 and 33, respectively) in conference play than NIU's entire team. Combined, they have more blocked shots than any other team in the entire conference (74...Buffalo is second in the conference with 71). Pretty incredible.

-Minnie and Tim Bond are both top 6 in blocks and steals. I think if one those two doesn't win defensive POTY, it would be a travashamockery.

Bottom line, Sam:

EMU has proved that good defense with a lot of blocks and steals and a capable offense can be pretty effective and exciting.

I still say that during this stretch playing EMU has been a little like going to the dentist and getting a root canal.

Big game against Toledo. It's their senior night and no one, I mean no one wants to go into the tournament with a loss.

I think we can win this game if Minnie plays. If he doesn't, much respect to him and family coping with a loss of a loved one.

This makes Friday night a big game for Kowalczyk, the Toledo head coach. Let's face it EMU is an absolute nightmare for both he and Oates, it's the team you DO NOT want to play in the semis. Even if you can beat us, it likely will require effort that will leave you flat in the finals.

So there is absolutely no chance that on Friday Toledo chooses simply to coast into the tournament with the 2 seed. They will maximize Senior night and the home court advantage to try and beat EMU. Truly they don't need the win as much as they will want to bump us into the 4 seed and thus be in Buffalo's side of the tourney bracket.
