2018/19 Men's Basketball Schedule
I had a chance to speak with Scott Wetherbe at the Toledo game. He told me EMU has an agreement to play University of Kansas and Kentucky that will pay us $100,000. Wetherbe said he's using $50000 to bring in a couple of D1 teams to the Convo. He also said that we'll be playing UofD next year and hopefully we can get Oakland on the schedule too. I believe we would beat UofD, and Oakland plus playing at Kansas and Kentucky will help bring in recruits. Big time highschool players want to play against talent that's at schools like Kentucky and Kansas. Let's see if he makes this happen.

Awesome info. I'd prefer playing more paycheck games like that, if it allows us to pay some D1 teams to come to the convo. I like Wetherbee more and more by the day.

I really want to see a MAC vs Horizon League Showcase or tournament early in a season here soon. Host it at LCA. I think it could be great.

A great idea! Basketball, unlike football does not have "body bag" games where you will lose MAC players to injury because they are playing against NFL first round draft picks. Also with respect to the post season, the only way EMU basketball can get into the NCAA tournament is to win the MAC tournament. The overall record is irrelevant unlike football where you must have a .500 record to be bowl eligible.
Plus it requires the coach at EMU a degree of difficulty in getting to the 20 win season he needs to extend his contract. The guy has no chance of being .500 in the MAC after 7 years of coaching but thanks to the scheduling of Spring Arbor, U-M Dearborn and such he is closing in on another 20 win season. YEAH!

Blame the previous AD, Jerry. Murphy has been vocal in his disdain for the non-D1 games.

Blame $ which is the start of any conversation about EMU athletics... We've turned down post season games because we didn't have 50K available to pay.
We have been lucky to get into some early season tourneys which yields some home games. Two D-I games this season plus remember the 'Iceman Classic."
It appears that we'll play, actually continue to play, some big name road games to raise enough money to afford a few D-I home games.
Nothings really changed. The 'dynamics' of mid-major scheduling hasn't changed at all, except maybe get worse over the last 10 or 15 years. We do NOT have the money to afford SIX D-I home games even playing some money games. UDM or Oakland is but one home game per season. The typical price of a D-I home game starts around 50K and goes up, depending on the opponent.
This year we played Indiana and Syracuse. Next year Kansas and Kentucky.

The only one who likes non-D1 games is the EMU athletic department accountant.
