As 69 so frequently reminds us:
Losing is OK if you have a good enough reason.
Here you go:
Pick one.
It is early in the season.
Stanford is a top 10 team.
It is too sunny.
It is not sunny enough.
It is too hot.
It is too cold.
Add other reasons.....

We used up our season’s luck in the first four games?

RE: Stanford Game 3
The defensive lapses are starting to get out of hand. It’s absurd to keep making bad mistakes in routine plays.
This team has some pitching and has some pop. But if we can’t make plays in the field, it will be a long season. I don’t know whether we can age personnel or move them around or what. Bu we have to do something.

Agreed. This SHOULD have been a win. Moss was tremendous. Totally got the shaft from our defense.

Many of us posters criticized the football team for its frequent inept play. For several years now, the baseball team has played just as ineptly at times.
Re 1998. Yeah. How many unearned runs were there. Might have set a Rice single game record. Got to feel for Moss.

There's a whole lot of excuses. Some of them pretty good. But not if you want to play with the big guys. Like Stanford, TCU, Texas A&M, etc.
10 years ago we didn't accept any excuses.

There is zero excuses for this loss. When your pitcher is as flat out dominant as Addison was today...you have to win. Ford's base running blunder and error were catalysts to the wheels falling off. Coupled with Cox having a disastrous start to the season in LF....ugh...I gotta stop...

The error at 1B with 2 outs really changed the game. From the end of the inning we gave up 5 unearned runs.
The mini rally in the 8th was a bright spot compared to the last 2 games, but we desperately need to stop gifting games away with errors and sloppy fielding.

Ant, the error was on Proctor and the throw. Sarchet had no chance to make the play as he was pulled 5+ feet off the bag. Not sure if Ford's hand was still bothering him from jamming it in the ground the previous half inning when he foolishly attempted to stretch a single into a double.

I’m trying to remember the sequence, but the problem was t fords theow....
The problem was the bunt to third that was fielded and the. Bobbled at first (one hop throw)... followed by missing turning a double play for the same reason
Not saying fires throw wasn’t a problem.... but we had numerous chances to get out of theninning

If not for Ford's error, Moss retires the side in order in the 6th inning, and has faced the minimum batters (as the lone baserunner was thrown out trying to steal). Hoerner followed with the HR, then the bobbled bunt, the double down the line and the misplayed, bad hop single to LF that went for a double.
The missed turning of the double play (with Sarchet dropping a perfect throw) eventually resulted in a tag on unearned run in the 7th (after a subsequent sac fly), and a final unearned run was added in the 8th.

Ford's running blunder led to him jamming his hand which led to his throwing error which led to the home run....
Crazy how that happens but it did...

Thanks for the reminder Walt. And good to see you, Ant, Almaden, Swede, sky, .net, Pars... and others... including some friends who don’t post here that I know of so I’m not going to mention real names... and some parents who were lots of fun
What I intended to say was that it wasn’t just one thing... give up the HR after fords error and we still win... it was ‘the wheels falling off’ For half an inning with guys who just choked a bit
Some will blame pitching, but the pitching was adequate. Bats were adequate. Against a top 10 team, that’s saying something. It was a running error, a throwing error, three or four fielding errors that cost us. Oh, and of course plaaying a strong left handed pitching team without your two better left handed hitters...You just can’t do that against a top 10 team.
Throw strikes and trust your defense only works when you can trust your defense.

Starting pitching was very good. As for the rest I'll add to the list of mistakes the coaching mistake of bringing in Silber in the situation.

And why was that a coaching mistake? Nick pitched very well in intrasquads and was reading to step up as a contributor this year...and still may. Who did you want to come in in that situation? It's not as if anyone in the bullpen, save for Gayle, has been reliable up to this point.
